Also, Barney can be either visibly fat or appear to be skinny (if there are two Barneys, both are usually the latter weight).
** It tends to vary among users whether or not Red/Teeth versions of characters (such as Boris, most notably) are separate entities from their normal counterparts or are transformations of the characters themselves, though having them as separate characters seems to be the most common interpretation.
** Finally, the severity of the punishments given to the trouble-making kids tends to fluctuate as well. Some users just use the absurdly long grounding time and call it a wrap. Others frequently if not exclusively use "Punishment Days" (a string of consecutive punishments), while still others just have the trouble-making kid get severely injured (if not outright killed) as punishment.

* DiabolusExMachina: No matter how impossible it might look for a character to get caught and grounded, somehow, someway, something will happen that will expose the trouble-maker and their schemes to someone and end with them grounded, no matter how illogical it seems. There are also other instances of this trope outside of exposing the trouble-maker.
* DeniedFoodAsPunishment: In one ''Justin Bieber Gets Grounded'' video, Justin's parents force him to eat poop and drink pee as a punishment.
* DisproportionateRestitution: A lot of times the naughty kid will begin apologizing to people or their families for what they did wrong once they get caught. The apologies really don't hold much water if the bad thing they did resulted in mass mayhem and panic, massive property damage, or people getting hurt or killed. This can also be reversed when all the naughty kid did was, say, steal someone's cookies, and their parents still refuse their (more reasonable) apology.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** This is the ''only'' form of retribution in the infamous "Gets Grounded" videos. Make one small slip-up and you'll find yourself grounded for an impossibly long time. Sometimes your parents will violently attack you. And you can even get grounded for reasons far beyond your control[[note]]Caillou, for example, has been grounded for ''being bald'', and for being named Caillou (even though it was his parents who named him)[[/note]], or [[ForTheEvulz for no reason at all]].

** It's occasionally inverted; characters will sometimes do terrible things like killing people, causing natural disasters, etc. All that happens to them is that they get grounded by their parents.
** Some videos show characters going to the dentist, only to find out that they have cavities. Rather than logically treat the cavities, the dentist does absolutely nothing and ignores treatment, instead scheduling their next appointment, and the kids get grounded when they get home.
** There are some videos which take place at an airport as the main family/characters prepare to leave for a vacation, and the troublemaker sets off the security booth with...a large water bottle. The security guard then ''angrily kicks them all out of the airport'' as though the entire family/cast had decided to cause a public disturbance in the airport instead of simply causing a minor and accidental[[labelnote:*]] at least if the troublemaker wasn't shown to set off the security booth on purpose just to be a brat[[/labelnote]] inconvenience, rather simply telling them why this was a problem and sending them on their way once the problem was rectified. (Additionally, everyone blames the troublemaker for ruining their vacation even if they (implied or explicitly) were the ones who got the kid the water bottle in the first place.)
* TheDogBitesBack: Zig-zagged - many videos have the punished parties get fed up with the groundings and enact some sort of revenge scheme to get them in trouble. However, a very rare few allow them to get away with their revenge.

* DeathByFallingOver: In the "(Character) Misbehaves at (Indoor Water Park or Place that Has One)", two of the atrocities committed by the trouble-makers include them pushing some slow-moving riders down a water slide and shoving a kid off some floating walk-pads. In both cases they wind up severely injured or dead.
* DeathIsCheap: Reviving a deceased character in these videos is as simple as just willing them back to life. Either that, or depending on NegativeContinuity.
* {{Deconstruction}}:
** After Website/{{Tumblr}} discovered the [=GoAnimate=] community, several attempts at deconstructing grounded videos have been made. Most notable are [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HgNK-J9uK0 Eric gets grounded and wakes up to a realization]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj_ukVmWKhE Eric's Dad Discovers the Truth]]. Some other users also tend to deconstruct, but more often just satirize the absurdity of grounded/dead meat videos. After the latter gained unironic subscribers from the [=GoAnimate=] community, it became a StealthParody.
** Also done with users like [=NotSmirks=] (formerly) and Warren Cookie, although in a way that evokes the darkest side of WebAnimation/YouTubePoop.
** [=YouTube=] user Creator/Wileyk209zback is fond of doing these kinds of videos, often making fun of the "Grounding" videos by making it so Boris is mentally unbalanced and has an unhealthy obsession with grounding people, and tries to pin it on Caillou [[BrattyHalfPint being an obnoxious brat]], but most of the time SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome occurs, and Doris confronts Boris and tells him to stop grounding Caillou [[DisproportionateRestitution for every little thing he does]], and may even [[DomesticAbuse fight with him over it]]. It even goes so far they go to court over it!
* DenserAndWackier: Not that the videos were ever considered very serious in the first place, but many of the earliest grounded videos were more...erm...''[[IncrediblyLamePun grounded]]'' in reality, as you can see in UnbuiltTrope below. It was about when Caillou, Dora, and other baby show characters began appearing and getting grounded that the usual tropes of grounded videos came into play and sent the Grounded videos headlong into absurdity and infamy.
* DependingOnTheWriter: Everyone has their own ways of interpreting the characters they use in their videos, especially Caillou and his family:
** While a number of users use the "Ivy" voice setting for WesternAnimation/{{Caillou}}, many others use the "David" voice setting instead. (Though with the David voice setting having been removed from the interface, the Joey voice setting has become a common alternative.) Caillou can also be anywhere from just his canonical BrattyHalfPint self [[CharacterExaggeration taken]] UpToEleven to a dangerous [[TheSociopath sociopath]] with a HairTriggerTemper depending on the user.
** Rosie tends to waver back and forth between being just an innocent (if TooDumbToLive) victim of Caillou's schemes to either ratting Caillou out as soon as he acts out. (Whether innocently or maliciously.) Other times, she's just as antagonistic as everyone else and joins Boris in [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling deliberately antagonizing Caillou]]. Other times she's every bit as malicious as her brother and causes trouble wherever she goes.
** Doris's characterization also tends to vary wildly among users. She tends to range between being [[TokenGoodTeammate genuinely nice but firm]] mom who is willing to take Caillou's side sometimes (albeit still giving long grounding times like all the other parents), a [[TheGadfly Gadfly]] that borders on a [[ThePrankster screwball]], an apathetic {{Jerkass}} who pays Caillou no mind unless he's misbehaving, to being every bit as AxCrazy as her husband.
** Dora's appearance in the videos [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7yksVSwawk frequently changes]] [[https://youtu.be/XqJXcA9kqyM?t=1m16s depending]] on the user as well. Rosie and Boris also frequently vary in appearance among users.
** The parent characters can be anything from just overly stern to somewhat abusive to every bit as sociopathic as their troublemaking kids depending on the user.
** In some videos, there's one Barney who is a troublemaker and jerk, and in others, there are two Barneys (an evil red and purple Barney, and a good purple and green Barney). Also, Barney can be either visibly fat or appear to be skinny (if there are two Barneys, both are usually the latter weight).
** It tends to vary among users whether or not Red/Teeth versions of characters (such as Boris, most notably) are separate entities from their normal counterparts or are transformations of the characters themselves, though having them as separate characters seems to be the most common interpretation.
** Finally, the severity of the punishments given to the trouble-making kids tends to fluctuate as well. Some users just use the absurdly long grounding time and call it a wrap. Others frequently if not exclusively use "Punishment Days" (a string of consecutive punishments), while still others just have the trouble-making kid get severely injured (if not outright killed) as punishment.
* DerangedAnimation: Very common in the satirical videos by users such as [=NotSmirks=], Warren Cookie, and [=NotZick=] Zick, though it's not unheard of this to happen in the non-satirical grounded videos as well.
* DiabolusExMachina: No matter how impossible it might look for a character to get caught and grounded, somehow, someway, something will happen that will expose the trouble-maker and their schemes to someone and end with them grounded, no matter how illogical it seems. There are also other instances of this trope outside of exposing the trouble-maker.
* DeniedFoodAsPunishment: In one ''Justin Bieber Gets Grounded'' video, Justin's parents force him to eat poop and drink pee as a punishment.
* DisproportionateRestitution: A lot of times the naughty kid will begin apologizing to people or their families for what they did wrong once they get caught. The apologies really don't hold much water if the bad thing they did resulted in mass mayhem and panic, massive property damage, or people getting hurt or killed. This can also be reversed when all the naughty kid did was, say, steal someone's cookies, and their parents still refuse their (more reasonable) apology.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** This is the ''only'' form of retribution in the infamous "Gets Grounded" videos. Make one small slip-up and you'll find yourself grounded for an impossibly long time. Sometimes your parents will violently attack you. And you can even get grounded for reasons far beyond your control[[note]]Caillou, for example, has been grounded for ''being bald'', and for being named Caillou (even though it was his parents who named him)[[/note]], or [[ForTheEvulz for no reason at all]].
** Worse, there have been videos made of users the uploader doesn't like [[MoralEventHorizon being]] ''[[MoralEventHorizon executed]] [[MoralEventHorizon and their deaths being celebrated]]'' over petty things like, as noted below, ''making fake VHS openings.''
** You can get expelled from school ''just for getting a mathematical problem wrong.'' (granted, most of the time the grounding victims come up with answers not even remotely close to the actual one, but still)
*** Many characters will get expelled from school due to getting an "F" in a single class.
** In many "(character) Misbehaves At (restaurant)" videos, the troublemaker flips out and trashes the restaurant because the restaurant was out of one of the things they ordered. In other videos they freak out over the restaurant being closed.
** There are videos where one character will litter on the ground, only for another to walk up to it and instantly get arrested and sent to jail.
** It's occasionally inverted; characters will sometimes do terrible things like killing people, causing natural disasters, etc. All that happens to them is that they get grounded by their parents.
** Some videos show characters going to the dentist, only to find out that they have cavities. Rather than logically treat the cavities, the dentist does absolutely nothing and ignores treatment, instead scheduling their next appointment, and the kids get grounded when they get home.
** There are some videos which take place at an airport as the main family/characters prepare to leave for a vacation, and the troublemaker sets off the security booth with...a large water bottle. The security guard then ''angrily kicks them all out of the airport'' as though the entire family/cast had decided to cause a public disturbance in the airport instead of simply causing a minor and accidental[[labelnote:*]] at least if the troublemaker wasn't shown to set off the security booth on purpose just to be a brat[[/labelnote]] inconvenience, rather simply telling them why this was a problem and sending them on their way once the problem was rectified. (Additionally, everyone blames the troublemaker for ruining their vacation even if they (implied or explicitly) were the ones who got the kid the water bottle in the first place.)
* TheDogBitesBack: Zig-zagged - many videos have the punished parties get fed up with the groundings and enact some sort of revenge scheme to get them in trouble. However, a very rare few allow them to get away with their revenge.
* DomesticAbuse:
** Fred gets depicted as emotionally, verbally and physically abusive towards Daphne, just like he is to the rest of Mystery Inc.
%%** Creator/Wileyk209zback likes to have Doris do this to Boris when calling him out over his unhealthy grounding obsession and punishing Caillou for [[DisproportionateRetribution minor offenses]].
* DoNotTouchTheFunnelCloud: There are a surprisingly large amount of videos involving tornadoes hitting the city that most Grounded videos take place in, and in most cases, nothing actually gets damaged (nor do people get injured or killed) until the tornado actually hits them.
* DontLikeDontRead: Quite a number of videos will have the author of the video asking for viewers to "respect [the creator's] opinion". Nine times out of ten, it's usually "If you even disagree with what I say, it means you're a baby show lover". Another variation of this is for the author to proclaim that they "don't support child abuse" and if you're offended by the video, don't watch it.
* DoubleStandard: The usual given reason for everyone's loathing for baby show characters such as Caillou and Dora is because...well...they're "baby show" characters. For whatever reason, though, no one seems to care that Rosie, Boris, Doris, Diego, or any of Caillou or Dora's other family members are technically "baby show" characters themselves. The likely reason is because they all dislike the main characters themselves so everyone just brushes this off.
* DownerEnding: There are too many instances of this trope in the grounded videos to list them all individually. Generally speaking though, if the main character was trying to correct their problems, help somebody, or they had good intentions when they misbehaved, expect the ending to be this if they still get grounded.
* DreamSequence: "(Character) has nightmares/bad dreams" videos primarily take place in a dream being had by the Character/Troublemaker Of The Day. Many of these videos often involve scary [[VanityPlate logos]] due to RecycledScript from NitroG’s ''Dora’s Nightmare'' trilogy. Also, a number of these videos end with the character's parents coming in to ground them, just because they can (or, as in the original ''Dora’s Nightmare'' video, for stealing their “nighttime medications”). Videos involving nightmares are the most prevalent of these types of videos, but Grounded videos involving good (or just plumb weird) dreams are out there.

** You'll find no bumbling dads or moms here. Even the goofiest of parents (such as [[WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball Richard Watterson]] or [[Literature/TheBerenstainBears Papa Bear]]) are now competent enough to catch their kids in the act of troublemaking and heavily discipline them.
** In the videos where Arthur (or D.W.) is the troublemaker, Mr. Haney, who is typically somewhat of an air-head, is usually shown to be equally as competent ([[SadistTeacher and harsh]]) as all of the other principal characters in the grounded videos.
