This Senpai, like the canon one, has the Spirit within him. So he's not only being trapped against his will, but forced to serve his captors.

However, other characters like Desti and Axol aren’t, so they can permanently die like in cutscenes (or they’ve just run out of lives in Axol’s case)

* Mario bitchslapping Toad in the Perfect movie to talk to him makes perfect sense. In Super Mario 64, the button you use to talk to NPCs also happen to be the same one you use to do some basic attacks.
