* There's a fangame titled Pokémon Soulstones in which there are Normal-type variants of Cubchoo and Beartic based on brown bears that have the Thick Fat ability. One might question why regular Cubchoo and Beartic don't have this ability. After all, wouldn't a warm, buoyant, nourishment-storing fatty body be a good thing for polar Pokémon to have? Then one realizes that perhaps they already have one, but A. their fat is more evenly distributed throughout their bodies and/or B. this fat can protect them from cold, but not heat, so it doesn't qualify as the Thick Fat ability, which protects from both Ice AND Fire moves.

* In a way, the Forces of Nature's types are still connected to the elements of TheFourGods that they're based on:
** Tornadus, based on the Red Phoenix of Fire, is a Flying-type. Fire needs air (more specifically, oxygen) to burn.
** Thundurus, based on the Blue/Green Dragon of Wood, is an Electric-type. Both Electric and Grass are super effective against water. Also, power plants, anyone?
** Landorus, based on the White Tiger of Metal, is a Ground-type. Metal is extracted from the earth.
** Finally, Enamorus, based on the Black Turtle of Water, is a Fairy-type. Magic could be seen as flowing like water, not to mention that Fairy is seen as a more "feminine" type and that water is also seen as a feminine element in the east due to its association with yin.

**Generation IX introduced a new evolution that continues the chess theme, Kingambit. Kingambit is described as the head honcho of the Pawniard evolution line, and the king in chess is the "leader" of the pieces, such that being unable to prevent the king's capture (checkmate) causes you to lose. Additionally, Kingambit's idle pose seems to depict it sitting whereas Pawniard and Bisharp are standing. In spite of his importance, the king is also one of the least mobile chess pieces.

* At first, it would seem strange that Alomomola doesn't evolve from Luvdisc despite their similarities, but the introduction of the Wiglett and Toedscool lines in VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet might provide a plausible reason for this. Wiglett, Toedscool, and their evolutions resemble Diglett, Tentacool, and their evolutions, respectively, and were believed to be Paldean variants of them, but they turn out to be completely different species. They just so happen have similar traits to adapt to their environment, which is known in real life as convergent evolution. With this in mind, it's possible that Aolomomola just happened to resemble Luvdisc to adapt to Unovan waters, which is why it's not related to it by evolution.

* Victini's signature move is called V-create, and is obviously referring to both its name and its theme of "victory". However, the name is a little awkward; why not just call the move "victory", or "victorious flames", or something like that. However, the "V" in the little has a double meaning: It's also referring to GENERATION V (5), the generation that Victini is the first Pokémon in.
** This is even more explicit in the original Japanese, where the move is actually called "V-generate."
* I an still using Serperior, Simipour, and Victini after obtaining 7 badges. Then I realize: this is why the Snivy line has such a bad moveset! You get your starter at the beginning of the game, then shortly after get the elemental monkey with a type weak to your starter, then by the time you are ready to get your third badge, you can get Victini. If you do not get Snivy, you end up with two good Fire-types (Tepig for those who choose it and Pansear if you choose Oshawott). But if you have Snivy, then you have a good Fire, Water, and Grass Pokémon. To keep things a bit more fair, they made it weaker.
** Except Victini is an event-only Pokémon.
*** That was available during the first couple of months that the game is out; that's when the bulk of the games were sold.

* All official media has red-striped Basculin and blue-striped Basculin listed separately, even though they are the same species and are functionally identical. It wasn't until catching one and reading the Black version Pokédex entry — which states that they are very hostile in general and that the red and blue ones start fighting with one another instantly — that this troper realized that, this generation being based on America rather than Japan, they're a subtle reference to the Bloods and the Crips.
** I always thought it was Republicans vs Democrats...
** Basculin is way more likely to be based on RedOniBlueOni. Yeah, they're both violent, but the blue one looks calmer.
* The constantly-bickering red and blue Basculin have been compared to the following:
** The Bloods and Crips.
** The Republican and Democratic Parties (because America).
** The characters Red and Blue themselves (while Blue is known as Green in Japan, Unova is based off New York)
* Scraggy and its evolution Scrafty are two lizards dressed in a punk-style getup (the latter sporting an additional mohawk and hoodie), and its type is fittingly Dark/Fighting. When I saw that it was weak to Fighting, one of its own types, I came up with an idea. Other Fighting types like Machoke and Hitmonlee are based on martial artists with training and some combat strategy, while Scrafty represents an untrained thug. Normally, a trained fighter has an advantage in a fight over someone with no training. Even if two Scrafty fight, it'll be like two gang rivals dueling, since both will use Fighting type moves and go down quickly.

* The reason why the Pokédex entries for Yamask and Cofagrigus and other such Pokémon are considerably darker this time around could be because Hilbert/Hilda are older than the previous protagonists and are therefore accustomed to more mature concepts. After all, it is the player character who fills out the Pokédex entries!
** Except the theory that the player character is the one writing the entries, though amusing, has way more logic holes than what should be acceptable for canon. The fact that every generation has similar Pokédex entries by itself should be enough to clue you in that they can't all be coincidentally made up by unaware people. The anime portrayal of the dex is most likely accurate.

** So explain Grimer and Muk.
*** Sludge is a toxic byproduct of factories that cannot be recycled. Garbage, however, can, for the most part, be recycled. Japan has strict recycling laws, while America produces massive amounts of garbage. Also, Japan uses nuclear power. Lots of toxic sludge there.
*** Not really. CRUD is not toxic, just radioactive. CRUD is mostly cobalt and iron. The fuel itself should not be leaking into the coolant, as it is sealed into zircalloy or TRISO particles.

*** There are no pure Flying types in Gen 1. In fact, the only pure Flying-type in all of Pokemon is Tornadus. Do you mean Normal/Flying type?
** Here's what I think it is. In the first generation, we had the Poison-type Pokémon Grimer, Muk, Koffing, and Weezing. Those two families represent toxic sludge and poison gas, or rather, pollution in two states of matter, liquid and gas. Now that we have Trubbish and Garbodor, the trio is complete with the Solid Waste (i.e. garbage) Pokémon.

* I've heard that some people really dislike Klink, because it's a strange design. But think about this: Unova is a very technologically advanced region, compared to others, right? Couldn't it be that they reverse-engineered this from the Pokémon?

* I was always somewhat disappointed by the supposed lack of creativity in the Klink line's design until I realised that in the gameverse, gears were based on Klinks!
** Or it's the other way around, and Klink is another tsukomogami-based Pokémon.
** Also, going off the whole "lots of expies" thing mentioned earlier, it's a reference to the Magnemite line.
* Eelektross is stated to live in the water, even though it's a pure Electric-type incapable of learning any offensive Water moves. Many fans have expressed confusion about this, but think about it — Water is weak to Electric, meaning Eelektross has a type advantage when it hunts.
* Tropers/TommyX: Elgyem's Pokédex entry says it first appeared in the desert, so why does it appear in a tower further north? Elgyem is Psychic, and there are two Dark-types native to the area, as well as a couple Bug-types and Ghost-types. So it left the desert and went to live in the Celestial Tower. Why it's living with another Ghost type, though, I can't figure out.
** Another thing I realized: Elgyem is more common the further you go up in the tower. That's because it's trying to get the attention of its friends in space!
** Another reason they're interested in the Celestial Tower? It's a good place to study certain attributes of human society, considering they're an alien race and all...

* As I took a peek at the new Pokémon (Gen V), I rejoiced as I saw there was an anteater/ant duo! But then I noticed the anteater was a Fire type, and the ant was Bug/Steel, which meant the anteater clearly had the upper hand, a very odd thing for a rivalry. * It ties in with FridgeHorror, but Zwelious has two brains. Hydreigon has three heads, but one brain. The fact it takes the longest of any Pokémon to evolve makes sense; the heads don't want to die/be merged!

* Just realised. Kyurem has just got a Zekrom form and a Reshiram form. However, these still have ice on them. This is because it's not complete. Kyurem is the body from which both Zekrom and Reshiram came from. It's not complete without both of them.

* It just occurred to me: according to Bulbapedia, Genesect is an abandoned Team Plasma experiment. It uses drives to change its type. Arceus uses plates for the same purpose. Team Plasma was trying to create the god and creator of Pokémon in their own image!
** Except drives don't change its type. In at least BW (because we don't know what they prepared for sequels...), it is always Bug/Steel. Only Techno Blast changes type, and ironically, that signature move is inferior in Fire-, Electric-, and Ice-types, as the only Water-type move Genesect can get is Hidden Power. Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam — they all have more PP and power than Techno Blast, plus they have additional effects. This is only true in Generation V. As of Generation VI, Techno Blast is stronger than Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam. Apparently Game Freak realized that they'd accidentally made Genesect's signature move nearly useless and fixed it. Without a Drive, it's Normal-type, Genesect's best Normal-type move aside from Self-destruct, Explosion, Hyper Beam, and Giga Impact, and those all have drawbacks.

*** Unless perhaps the reason it only has one brain when it evolves is because when Deino evolves into Zweilous, its brain's two hemispheres are split between the two heads, and evolving into Hydreigon helps them combine back into one.
