* ObviouslyEvil: Trent's behavior around the police (most notably in his ''first scene'' at the precinct, where he builds ''and arms'' a bomb in the middle of a squad room and somehow manages to not get shot by everyone in the room) is so blatantly unhinged that one has to wonder how ''any'' amount of bribe money could have convinced them to work with the guy.

''The Specialist'' is a 1994 action film, directed by Luis Llosa.

The film opens in 1984. Ray Quick (Creator/SylvesterStallone) and Ned Trent (Creator/JamesWoods) are agents of the CIA and explosives experts. They have been tasked with assassinating a drug lord. When Ray notices that their target is accompanied by a little girl, he wants to call off the hit. Ned performs it anyway, killing both the drug lord and his girl. Ray is disgusted and quits their partnership and the agency. Ten years later, Ray has become a freelance assassin. Making a point of only killing specific targets, never bystanders. He also takes some cases for free, responding to requests by desperate people.

The latest such request comes from May Munro (Creator/SharonStone), a young woman who has an old grievance: while still underage, she witnessed the murders of both her parents by organized crime figures due to her father having been a witness in some case. She was hiding in the closet and recognized one of the killers, Tomas Leon (Creator/EricRoberts). He happens to be the only son and heir to a mob boss. Years later, she located him, seduced him and infiltrated his organization. Now she needs a partner to help assassinate him and hopefully bring the organization down as well. That Ned is part of said organization is added incentive for Ray.

* BlackAndGreyMorality: While Ray is the nominal hero of the film, he's also a ProfessionalKiller who murders people more evil than himself for money while avoiding civilian casualties. In contrast, Trent is an ex-CIA operative who isn't above doing whatever he needs to get the job done, no matter the cost.

* CrazyPrepared: Not only does Ray take out his targets with elaborate methods (including wiring a car garage keypad to take out the occupant of a specific car and using an explosive teacup), but his compound is wired with boobytraps ''and'' he possesses the means to wire an apartment for demolition with only a couple minutes' notice beforehand.

* HitmanWithAHeart: Ray, who only goes after outright villainous individuals, and will sometimes take on cases pro bono for clients who don't have the financial means to pay him.

* OutrunTheFireball: During the climax, when Ray and May have to escape his exploding compound.

The film was a box office hit, earning $170,362,582 in the worldwide market. Somewhat unexpected because Stallone had few major hits in the 1990s. The critics hated the film, pointing to unlikely situations and painful dialogues. At least James Berardinelli noted that the reason people liked it was because of having two great attractions: [[MrFanservice Sylvester Stallone's biceps]] and [[MsFanservice Sharon Stone's breasts]].

* ChewingTheScenery: Holy cow, James Woods must have crapped Kodak film reels after this role.
