No reception in description

Although it was a financial success (grossing more than twice its enormous budget in the U.S. alone), critical reception towards the film was mixed. ''Popeye'' fans were upset that the film wasn't anything like the animated Creator/{{Fleischer|Studios}} or Creator/{{Famous|Studios}} cartoons and instead drew more heavily from the ''Thimble Theater'' comic strip that had birthed the character. The film derailed Robert Altman's directorial career for a decade and was largely disowned by Robin Williams for the rest of his life. Still, it would become a CultClassic over time.

Popeye is shown to have a full (if very short) set of hair in the comics. He only appears bald in most of the animated cartoons.

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In the comics and cartoons, Popeye is bald, homely, and has no teeth. Creator/RobinWilliams' Popeye has a full head of hair and a full set of teeth. He's also not nearly as homely as the cartoon Popeye.
