* EleventhHourSuperpower: Burning Godzilla wasn't seen in a movie before or since until [[Film/GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters2019 2019]] (though Burning Godzilla ''does'' make an appearance in the [[VideoGame/{{Godzilla}} 2014 video game]]), and it makes sense since this was made for the ''final'' film of the Heisei series.

Added DiffLines:

* EnergyBlade: One of Destoroyah's signature techniques in his Perfect Form is the Variable Slicer, also called the Horn Katana. Using the long horn on his forehead, Destoroyah can generate an incredibly sharp blade of pure energy over it, which he uses to great effect against Godzilla, performing a full-on DiagonalCut through his body twice! Judging by how much blood Godzilla lost, this technique is particularly devastating.

* MightyGlacier: After achieving his Perfect Form, Destoroyah's incredibly durable exoskeleton armour slows him down significantly, but he balances this by still being able to fly at impressive speeds, as well as by using his Micro-Oxygen Beam, [[EnergyBlade Variable Slicer]] and physical strength to keep his opponents at bay.

* Foreshadowing: After putting down Destoroyah after defeating his Aggregate Forms, Godzilla makes his way to Junior's lifeless body. For the shortest of moments, the sheer radiation he gives off causes Junior to briefly come back to life, but he is so badly injured that he can only make the slightest of movements on the ground, and his eyes gently close, indicating that he truly is dead. This foreshadows [[spoiler:his eventual resurrection following his father's death, as in his final moments, Godzilla gave Junior his radiation, allowing him to come back to life and grow into an adult, the ''New'' King of the Monsters.]]

** The film itself is one big call-back to the [[Film/Godzilla1954 first film]] which has several moments where the characters discusses the events of that film. The music even provides the context to the first film.

* DarkerAndEdgier: Compared to the semi-soft hearted ''Film/GodzillaVsSpacegodzilla'', this film is perhaps the darkest entry of the entire Heisei series (being the last film of this series notwithstanding). As dark as the first film as people say, since it deals with Godzilla dying, a villain that has no qualms killing anything in its path, and the idea to use the weapon to kill the original Godzilla. Several reprise from the music drives this further.

* CallBack: The entire plot is Godzilla's power going out of control to the point he will eventually explode. This is exactly what almost happened in [[Film/GodzillaVsSpaceGodzilla the previous film]] after [=SpaceGodzilla=] shoulder crystals were destroyed and his energy began to overload, only in that case the explosion would've only blown up everything from the city to Birth Island (presumably because [=SpaceGodzilla=] wasn't overcharged to anywhere close to the degree like Godzilla is here).

** Godzilla's body heat becomes a plot point again. In ''Film/GodzillaVsBiollante'', increasing Godzilla's body heat was to use the Anti-Nuclear Bacteria in order to subdue him. In this film, his body heat is dramatically increasing in three digits, and any more will actually kill him. This is what exactly happens in this film.

As this is the GrandFinale of the Heisei saga, this is the last contributions by Kazuki Omori, and the actors' roles, as well as Momoko Koichi's final film role before her death in 1998. The series would briefly retire Godzilla so Tri-Star create their own Godzilla film, [[Film/Godzilla1998 which would be released in May 20th, 1998]]. However due to the negative response to that film, Toho would release Godzilla from retirement in 1999 instead of their original intent to start a film in 2004 for its 50th anniversary.

* DarkReprise: Several music scores by Akira Ifukube are either darker or somber versions of his score from 1954. Some are even mixed with the new tracks to drive the point home that the world itself is in danger, and Godzilla ''knows'' he's dying.

* DramaticIrony: In the original film, Serizawa feared that the Oxygen Destroyer in its current form is nothing but a destructive weapon more powerful than an atomic bomb, and burned his notes so he won't have to be forced to make another one. Kensaku Ijuin's Micro Oxygen is a near identical, but weaker, version of the original weapon despite his intentions to respect Daisuke's wishes to not replicate it as a weapon, only to realize that Destoroyah gets ''stronger'' after the Micro Oxygen doesn't kill it. And so Kensaku accidentally made Serizawa's fear come to reality.

* FutureBadass: ''Film/GodzillaVsKingGhidorah'' implies this will happen to Junior as the plot of this film covers Godzilla's death, and the resurrection of Junior, though exactly how depends on whether the Futurians were telling the truth or not. * ContrivedCoincidence: Godzilla is undergoing a nuclear meltdown, and so the military is trying to find a way to cool him down before he accidentally destroys the world. At the same time, Kensaku Ijuin created a micro-organism which bore similarities to the Oxygen Destroyer that killed the original Godzilla back in 1954. Said Oxygen Destroyer awakened and mutated Precambrian life-forms 41 years after the death of the original Godzilla, which now means things went FromBadToWorse. So now Japan is between a rock and a hard place now that the atomic God of Destruction fights the devil of the Oxygen Destroyer to determine the end of the world.

The film involves Godzilla (Kenpachiro Satsuma) suffering from a [[SuperpowerMeltdown nuclear meltdown]] with 2 scenarios: A. He will blow up, resulting a nuclear explosion that will destroy the world. Or B. He will meltdown at 1200 degrees to the point he will destroy the world from the inside. New problems arise when fish in aquariums are being reduced to skeletons caused by creatures awakened by the Oxygen Destroyer, the weapon used to kill the first Godzilla in the original ''[[Film/Godzilla1954 Godzilla]]''. Now the world rests on Godzilla and his newly grown son Godzilla Junior (Hurricane Ryu) to take on this new threat, before the nuclear dinosaur dies.

** Destoroyah can emulate the Oxygen Destroyer causing the target to be reduced to bones. Sounds cool right? The problem? He has to have them in a body of water and break up into a swarm of microbes for it to work. And even when he dropped Godzilla into the ocean he still couldn't use it because Godzilla's immanent meltdown was boiling the water and made it and him too hot to use this power. The only one to fall victim to this in the whole movie was an aquarium full of fish.

** WordOfGod says that [[spoiler: it is Godzilla who actually kills Destoroyah off, Destoroyah, not the military. As Destoroyah falls out of the sky, Godzilla refuses to move out of the way. This is because he has been superheating the ground. The sudden change in temperatures between freezing cold and blazing hot is what destroys Destoroyah, which is Godzilla's doing. Rather than through just straight-up brutal violence, Godzilla kills Destoroyah scientifically. But it is still his actions (however relatively passive they may be) that finish end the monster off.monster.]]

* DestructiveSavior: For a teenaged Godzilla, Junior caused some destruction, but not at a collateral level as his father. Even if he's RaisedByHumans. However, being Godzilla's son and able to breathe a stream of atomic breath, it's inevitable. And to his forgiveness, the main building he toppled was wrecked because Detoroyah blasted him into it.

However, being Godzilla's son and able to breathe a stream of atomic breath, it's at least some collateral damage is inevitable. And to his forgiveness, in Junior's defense, the main building he toppled was wrecked because Detoroyah blasted piece of destruction he's "responsible" for (toppling a building) is due to Destoroyah blasting him into it.
