** MadMagazine made a point of underlining this in their spoof of the movie, with Winston asking Egon why it is that they're right back where they started in the first movie even after having saved New York. Egon rightly points out the trope and all the reasons movie sequels do this.

* DestroyerDeity: [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Gozer The Destructor]] has visited the world several times, and apparently visited several other dimensions and laid waste to them. It does seem to give the world a fairly sporting chance to pick their destruction, which proves it's undoing during 1984 when the form it assumes is the Staypuft Marshmellow man.

* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Why yes, yes they do… right before arming the proton packs.

** Despite his attitude, Peck, as the head of environmental safety, is entirely right to be concerned about people using unregulated and potentially dangerous equipment. Even the Ghostbusters admit their tech isn't exactly safe. Peck loses points because he's clearly biased in his attempts to have the Ghostbusters shut down, and he sails right over the line when he shuts off the containment unit despite being explicitly told by the ''designers'' that it will explode without power.

* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: One of the buildings of New York becomes the portal to a hell dimension and nobody seems to notice or care. (Though, given how New York is depicted in these films, this is perfectly "in-character".)

** The "monster movie"-style music that plays during Stay Puft Marshmallow Man's entrance is (intentionally?) PlayedForLaughs when juxtaposed with Mr. Stay Puft's smiling face. However, he does turn to face the Ghostbusters a few minutes later...

** Mentioned in the first film is that time Egon tried to drill a hole in his head. This is an actual procedure, called 'trepanation', which is sometimes claimed to confer psychic powers. "That would have worked if you hadn't stopped me." (Which was allegedly a ThrowItIn from Harold Ramis.)

* BottomlessMagazines: The slime blowers expend far more slime than the tanks could be reasonably said to carry. Possibly justified by the fact that the evil version of the slime demonstrates itself to be self-replicating in the courtroom scene, so the good version could do the same.

* DatedHistory: When the ''Titanic'' is shown arriving in port, it has a huge hole in the prow. And is in one piece rather than having split in half.

* BuiltWithLEGO: In 2014, six years after LEGO VideoGame/RockBand [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tl8B4Mb7nE featured the theme song]], an official LEGO set was approved via LEGO Cusoo, featuring Egon, Venkman, Ray, Winston, the Ecto-1, and Slimer.
** The Series also features in ''LegoDimensions'', with the Level Pack including a condensed version of the first film as a playable level- although in this case, as a consequence of [[BigBad Lord Vortech's]] plans to conquer the multiverse, [[Franchise/{{Superman}} General Zod]] is the villain who's wreaking havoc.

* GRatedSex: Played with. Dana, once possessed by Zuul comes on to Peter with such phrases as: "Take me now, sub-creature" and "I want you inside me". However, nothing comes of it because Venkman drugs her to keep her unconscious while Zuul has possession of her body. Once Peck has the containment unit shut down, she wakens, and waits for Vinz Glortho's arrival. In the person of Louis Tully he arrives. The two share a long, hot kiss, before ascending to the pillar. It is subtly implied, even though the next time we see them they're still dressed, that Dana and Louis, while possessed, had sex. Vinz is lying weakly on the platform, but his belt is unbuckled. There's also the Gatekeeper/Keymaster titles the possessing entities went by.

* GlassSmackAndSlide: Louis is chased by the Gatekeeper, Vinz Glortho, and attacked by him until he slams face first into the window of a restaurant and slides down, screaming. On the other side of the glass are a bunch of swanky, upscale diners who glance up briefly, then go back to exactly what they were doing.

* GivingThemTheStrip: Egon stops Winston and Ray from fighting by convincing them to take off their outerwear, which is soaked with megatively-charged slime. In the original script, it was Ray who'd be tugged towards the slime river by the measuring cable, but he'd have removed his belt to escape being dragged in.

* HollywoodLaw: The government is not allowed to simply shut down a business' without any due process (i.e. a hearing in court where defendants can tell their side). If it happened, they might have explained just why shutting down their machines would be a bad idea to someone reasonable.
