Belly is an 1998 American crime drama film, directed by music video director Creator/HypeWilliams, in his film directing debut. Filmed in New York City, the film stars rappers DMX and Nas, alongside Taral Hicks, Method Man, and R&B singer T-Boz.
The film begins in early 1999, with two young New York street criminals Tommy "Bundy" Bunds (DMX) and Sincere (Nas) violently robbing a club along with their associates in crime Mark and Black. Although they're ruthless, violent street gangsters, Bunds and Sincere both show signs of refinement and ambition. Sincere has become disillusioned with the street life, become enlightened to the plight of urban poor with the teachings of The Reverend and seeks a virtuous life outside of crime. Bunds, living in a high class loft with girlfriend Keisha (Taral Hicks), only really values money and possessions and never seems satisfied with anything.
The next day, Tommy overhears a news report of a new strain of heroin and sees it as a business opportunity. Sincere initially resists, but Tommy still convinces him to go along with the scheme: Purchase the drugs from Jamaican Kingpin Lennox (Louie Rankin); have Mark, Black, and Sincere transport them to Nebraska, where shifty friend Knowledge (Oliver 'Power' Grant) has set up shop; and transport the money back to New York, to split with Ox. Before the operation can get started, friction between Sincere and Black(lead along by a scheming Knowledge) leads Bunds to humiliate Black by forcing him to sit naked and watch them count money.
The plan works better than expected, between Lennox offering Tommy a discount (in exchange for a favor, of course) and Knowledge being a criminal genius with a crooked cop for a girlfriend, but local Omaha drug dealer Big Head Rico (Tyrin Turner) snitches to the police about the operation. Knowledge is arrested, Mark dies and Tommy is forced to go on the run, recruiting teenage gangsters Wise and La Kid to help him make money to pay back Lennox. After Tommy refuses to pay his bail, Knowledge calls in his friend Shameek (Method Man) to exact revenge on Big Head Rico, Bunds, and whoever gets in the way.
The film was generally praised for its highly stylized noir-like visual design and cinematography, it was criticized for poor screenplay and bad performances. Still, Belly is considered a hood classic and loved for a visual style that still seems fresh today, and its unapologetic look at street life in the 90s.

CrowningMomentOfAwesome: the opening club heist. Also, Shameek
* EvilIsCool: Subverted. Nobody except Tionne and Sincere really seems too worried about the morality of being robbers and drug dealers, and the beginning robbery and the drug-dealing montage are both shot stylistically, as if to emphasize the coolness...
