* AnyoneCanDie: Considering how the game works, it makes more than enough sense that at any moment, one of the students could ultimately be killed off, eliminating them from the game and thus limiting the pool of students more and more. In fact, by the rules of the game, it'll ultimately end with there either being [[SoleSurvivor one classmate left standing]], or [[KillEmAll nobody left standing]].

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: 42 students, their instructor Torchwick, his assistant Neo, their fellow employees, and way more outside the game. Plenty of them to go around! [[AnyoneCanDie For now]]...

* AdultFear: The idea that your child has not only been kidnapped, but is being forced to fight to the death alongside all their closest friends from their childhood.

** While its ''very'' minor, Cardin is seemingly less of a dick than canon, while still being a villain in the narrative. Despite this, his actions are painted as [[AdaptationalVillainy more cruel and dangerous]] in this setting.

** Flynt acts on his grudge against Weiss by trying to rob her at gunpoint of her supplies, while chewing her out and claiming her to be responsible for her father's actions. [[spoiler:He also kills Roy accidentally.]]
** Cardin Winchester and his gang are presented as playing the game, showing themselves as more than willing to kill their classmates. Despite this, Cardin is seemingly the ''least'' evil of his group; Dove is completely emotionally dead inside, Russel is apathetic to the misery of others, and Sky is outright psychotic. At worst Cardin just makes a jab or two and acts like a dick.

* AdaptationalBadass:
** In the original series, Nadir was presented as the comic relief of Team ABRN, and the weakest member of it. Here, he's one of the three strongest students of the ''entire'' class.
*** Similarly, Arslan and Bolin, other members of Team ABRN, are portrayed as also being among the strongest students in class, with the former in particular being seen as ''the'' strongest.

* AdaptationalNationality: A vast majority of the students are now American, with the exception of Blake(Japanese), Ilia(Indian), and Velvet(Spanish). Following the logic of the faunus in the show instead being foreign, it's likely Neon is also from a different country.
** WordOfGod confirmed her as Swedish.

** Blake never properly met or befriended Ruby and Weiss.
** Most of the teams in the series proper are acquaintances at best here, with some exceptions.

* AdultsAreUseless: Both Oobleck and Port were powerless to actually stop the program from taking the kids. {{Downplayed}} in that Torchwick makes it clear they were rather annoyingly persistent about trying to stop it.

* AllLovingHero: Jaune is such a genuinely kind and loving person toward his friends it's almost sickening.

* AlternateHistory: Japan remained a dictatorship and survived World War II, eventually becoming the Republic of Greater East Asia, which is mainly governed by something called the White Fang. Battle Royales were commonplace there, but due to how reserved they were, the United States and other nations barely know anything about the program, and while a small portion of the population is aware of it, it's certainly not public knowledge. The game presented in the story is apparently the second experiment ever attempted in the United States, and thus is being kept out of the public eye for now.

** Even those outside the game aren't safe, as [[spoiler:Professor Port]] is killed rather casually in just one sentence during ''"Last Call"''.

* AxCrazy:
** Cinder Fall and her gang are presented as bloodthirsty psychos in the story, being more than willing to kill absolutely anyone in their path.
** Sky is noted as looking animalistic and deranged in the game as if letting out temptations he's held within himself for some time.
** Roy ends up going crazy relatively fast in the game and ends up smashing Neptune's nose and attempting to carve Flynt open with a chainsaw.
* BigBadEnsemble: Due to the nature of the game, it's already very clear that several students will be playing the game and will be more than willing to kill their fellow players if it ensures their own survival. Among these players are [[TheSociopath Cinder]] and her two lackeys [[TheDragon Emerald]] and [[TheBrute Mercury]], [[TheBully Cardin]] and his gang of bullies ([[BewareTheQuietOnes Dove]], [[ItsAllAboutMe Russel]], and [[PsychoSupporter Sky]]), [[NoSympathyForGrudgeholders Flynt]], and [[DrivenToMadness Roy]].

* BottomlessMagazines: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]; the series seems to go out of its way to make sure the audience doesn't lose track of how much ammo a student has on them at all times and how often they'd need to reload.
* BulletProofVest: Pyrrha's starting weapon.

* DeadlyGame: ''Jesus christ'', this is a game that focuses around forty ''children'' being forced to murder one another just for the mere possibility of being allowed to leave afterward.
* DecoyProtagonist: Jaune Arc is the first character we meet in the story, and acts as TheEveryman. He's also ''very'' quickly confirmed as not being anywhere as important as it first seemed.

* TheEveryman: Jaune was chosen as the main character of the first chapter for this very reason according to WordOfGod.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** Roman Torchwick may have no problem killing the students, though he does prefer not doing so. Though whether this has to do with morality or not is a question in itself.
** Cardin may be a malicious bully, but even ''he'' is scared of Nadir and what he could possibly do to Flynt.

* EyeScream: [[spoiler:When Flynt guns Roy down, in the process he ends up taking out one of his eyes.]]
* GangOfBullies: Cardin leads one that regularly wreaks havoc on the students of the school. As expected, they team up during the program.
* GirlPosse: Nebula essentially leads a group full of [[AlphaBitch alpha bitches]], which includes herself, Dew, Gwen, and Octavia.

* HighSchoolSweethearts: Nolan and May are a confirmed couple, and they're usually all over each other.

* MauveShirt: Roy Stallion got arguably among the most screentime in the first few chapters as the one reacting most vocally to the experiment. [[spoiler:He's the first student to die.]]

** Jaune Arc refuses to play and instead attempts to unite his friends and keep them all safe, which he's able to get Weiss Schnee and Ruby Rose in on.
** Sun Wukong and a few other jocks (Neptune Vasilias, Scarlet David, and Sage Ayana) meet up with plans to look out for each other.
** Blake Belladonna has no hostile intentions, instead simply doing whatever she has to in order to survive.
** Coco Adel simply groups up with her outcast friends in the form of Yatsuhashi Daichi, Fox Alistair, and Velvet Scarlatina and plans to just react to the program as it happens.
** Bolin Hori is mostly just stealing from the other players and acting like a general troll.
** Flynt Coal uses the game to try and seek out revenge against Weiss, who he believes has wronged him.
** Cardin Winchester and his gang of bullies (Dove Bronzewing, Russel Thrush, and Sky Lark) try to avoid confrontation unless they have a clear advantage, preferring the reap the rewards of fights instead of starting them.
** Cinder Fall, along with her mooks, Emerald Sustrai and Mercury Black, are actively seeking out and murdering players with reckless abandon.
* MultipleGunshotDeath: [[spoiler:How Roy bites it at the hands of Flynt.]]
* NoodleIncident: Jaune apparently got really sick once, leading to him getting the nickname, "Vomit Boy".
* OfficialCouple: May and Nolan are apparently the longest-standing couple among the entire class, having been together since the 6th grade.

* PunchClockVillain: Most of the people playing the game clearly aren't psychotic killers on the outside. The only true exceptions are Cinder and Cardin, along with their respective gangs.

** Despite being told before class about bandages and the like, Flynt forgets they even exist after his injury. Realistically at least ''one'' of the kids was bound to, and due to his mind being clouded with thoughts of revenge, it'd only make sense he'd be one.
** Handguns aren't known for being especially accurate, which Sky learns as he chases Flynt down.

* WeHardlyKnewYe: Among the students, [[spoiler:Roy]] died during the first day of the three day game.
** We only knew [[spoiler:Professor Port]] for a single scene before he croaked.
