* ConditionedToAcceptHorror:ConditionedToAcceptHorror: In a war-torn region like the Kuroinu 'verse, this is bound to happen for people who manage to see things through.

** Sanakan and Hugh have bore many scars during their harsh lives as orphaned pickpockets. From how she confides to her mentor Kyril that they "didn't care about anything until the Black Dogs came", and that they didn't care if they survived or not, it is strongly implied that the two kids have developed shades of this trope, perfectly aware of the possibility of death, starvation or enslavement. This becomes more apparent throughout their tenures as hunters along with Lily and Soren, to any of those who are wondering just why they have not gone through some sort of HeroicBSOD or SanitySlippage in the battlefield, especially after the ordeals in Rad (aka Yarha'Gul 2.0) and the Malys Estate.
** Depictions of battlefields aside, this fanfic uses a considerable amount of effort to show the everyday conditions of the healers and clerics, how they feel about patching up the wounded soldiers and citizenry. Notable examples include Lily's P.O.V in Chapter 15, and Celestine's P.O.V in Chapter 24. Needless to say, playing this trope straight is pretty much essential if you are a healer. Apart from being accompanied with images of gore and lamentation from the injured all the time, both of which would give a lesser one nausea and constant headaches, they also have to cope with the all too often scenario where patients eventually succumb to their wounds despite their efforts. Gruelling work, indeed.

* CreepyHousekeeper / KindlyHousekeeper: Evetta manages to be both in spite of the contrary nature between the two archetypes. She is the caretaker of the Hunter's Dream who tends to the Workshop, the gravestones, and her Good Hunter. Her serene and kindhearted nature as a maternal figure, however, is overshadowed by the fact that she is, well, a living doll. For bonus points, she's also very tall.

* DisapprovingLook: While treading the muddy plains of Scathlocke, Sanakan has an internal narration on how she would jump in every puddle just to annoy Hugh if she were a little girl. As if sensing her thoughts, Hugh gives her this expression, daring her to try something silly.

Added DiffLines:

** Celestine goes through a vision, a premonition of a man garbed in dark grey and a tattered tricorne hat, the saw-like thing in hand, capable of both peace and laying waste to everything, including those that she holds dear. Evidently, it is a GodzillaThreshold to seek him out in hopes of ending the ForeverWar her country is embroiled in, but even so, she chooses to do so.

** The fanfic opens with a BatmanColdOpen featuring Kyril finishing off his hunt of an orc war band. A seasoned killer he is, the demented saw-cleaver hybrid on his hand immediately marks him as sinister and dangerous.

*** Michelle interrupts the meeting between his father Lord Michael Pantielle and the newly-appointed BlackKnight Sir Kyril by slamming the door open. When demanded to apologise to his guest, he whines about having to apologise to a person of lower status than he is, which earns him a slap and a lot of scolding from his already furious father.

*** Shamuhaza is introduced experimenting on the citizens of Rad to produce a legion of BodyHorror EliteMooks via FaceFullOfAlienWingWong. This is complete with a WhamShot of .

*** The mute hunter Hugh is known for his exceptional swordsmanship and marksmanship. During the same chapter, he is shown with the ability to pick locks, together with eavesdropping on the Gadsden Gang with Sanakan afterwards.
*** CombatMedic Lily definitely counts. Medical knowledge aside, she is the sociable one among Kyril's band of hunters. At one point during the Leaping Lizards Arc, she demonstrates a degree of political savviness by hiding the List of Names, a record for every transaction the Merchant's Guild has made with its associates, from the others in order to avert a potential scandal.

* MortonsFork: Kyril and Olga briefly discuss this trope after he makes it clear that the mission to bring her south is of utmost priority. Olga, in resignation, lampshades how he would bother letting her choose to stay or leave, given that she's damned either way no matter the choice. To be frank, she does have a point: if she stays, she would be under the mercy of the Black Dogs; if she leaves, she would be under the mercy of Kyril instead, who has proven to be ten times as dangerous. Kyril replies that even if the choices are bad and worse, it's still her decision to make. It just happens that it is one that some find liberating, while some don't. Cue ComeWithMeIfYouWantToLive remark.

Sure, they are EliteMooks, but they don't get these abilities willingly, and they are not having a good time, at all.
** Narratively speaking, StarPower is considered to be unnatural. Makes sense, for only those who delve into [[spoiler:the Eldritch Truth]] can utilise it. It speaks volumes when even the most skilled of arcane/magic users, like Olga, Seers Celestine, and Shamuhaza, are not shown to use this uncanny power. Kyril, from his experience in Yharnam, states that he had seen a few creatures that are able to fire starlight, like the Celestial Emissary. Therefore, he deduced that something or someone related to the Healing Church's research had somehow ended up here.
*** Further supported in the remastered version. After Kyril uses A Call Beyond to [[spoiler:overkill Vault]], Olga's narration remarks that this starfire spell is not something she had in her repertoire, doubting whether Celestine would even have something like this in her arsenal.

** Typically, works that deconstruct this archetype have the character to be SkilledButNaive, which leads them to screw up due to their immaturity. In contrast, The Night Unfurls has the kids, Lily included, go through a training regime in the Hunter's Dream for them to be prepared to face the toughest of adversaries. The regime, while intense, is hardly "hellish", meant to strengthen and "git gud", rather than to break and cripple. It also helps that [[spoiler:any wounds would be healed quickly, in addition to how time passes differently as Kyril wants]], providing an adequate environment for the kids to cease holding back without any risk of severe injury from their continuous sparring, especially with the Good Hunter, who thrashes the four around a lot. The end result? The apprentices come out TalentedButTrained. Combine this with a little bit of [[spoiler:Kyril's AlienBlood]], plus end-game level trick weaponry? You get an unstoppable BadassCrew of young, mature hunters.
** Kyril Sutherland, the MentorInSourArmor himself, is the answer to many a Deconstruction that has any KidHero go through a TraumaCongaLine that results in much mental trauma. Neither a TricksterMentor, nor a CynicalMentor, Kyril is certainly Pun a great one, sympathetic in spirit. Should the kids make progress in their training, he would not hesitate to praise them for their good work, which helps to keep them motivated. Besides, he does not pull any punches when informing his apprentices on what it means to be a hunter, including the struggles and bloodshed that the role entails. To those kids who have less experience than he does, this is important for them to have a concrete idea on the basic fact that, yes, they hunt, or rather, kill prey, including people. It is to prepare them for the worst, with the reward being to live another day. Combined with how he (and by extension, the Doll) gives them the parental figure they needed, is it of any surprise that Sanakan, Hugh, and Soren all turn out to be fairly, well-adjusted people in the end?
** Perhaps the single most important thing that makes this trope Reconstruction work, despite being torn to shreds countless times, is that ultimately, the kids want to be a hero. They are not pressured or forced into this role in any way. They understand that the world they live in is not a nice place. Yet, they willingly chose to train and gain strength to do good.

At one point, she even tries to lend a hand, to no avail, for the man she and the healers tried to help died anyway after six hours of surgery. Not until Celestine has her first-hand experience of the strife outside the palace did she understand that her city is in the midst of a rebellion, the war will cost everyone dearly, and that she would need to become a harsher ruler than before, if she wants to protect her people from Vault's predations.

Even if this is at the cost of numerous lives, it is to prioritise on the bigger picture -- the war effort, which should be clear of any distractions to prevent fighting on multiple fronts.
