** Because Luffy ended up on Nami's dinghy rather than simply crossing paths, it allows them to form a rapport that turns Nami's worldview on pirates on its head early on. This eventually turns into friendship and later an intimate romance. It also changes the Arlong Park arc by averting her defection.

Zoro hilariously inverts this by starting out ''lower'' at Luffy's original 30 million.

Nami and Vivi land a few good hits that genuinely injure Crocodile, but as soon as he starts using haki, they have no chance at all.

** Usopp vs the Kung-Fu Dugong. In the original story, the fight was not even shown. between one panel and the next, usopp was bloodied on the floor. In this story, he managed a YouAreAlreadyDead on the Dugong. It didn't work, but he actually got into a fight instead of being off-screened.

* BladeOnAStick: Usopp takes to using Krieg's exploding spear as a backup weapon. He ditches it after the Arlong Park arc due to how dangerous the explosion's backlash was on him.

* NaiveNewcomer: Vivi, though justified in due to her somewhat pacifistic nature. She truly thought that bringing the leader of the rebel's forces and her father to a peace confrence would stop the civil war from happening, not realizing that Crocodile probably had already thought of such a thing happening and implanted Baroque Works agents into both camps to restart the fighting in case of a ceasefire. Robin and the rest of the Straw Hats have to tell her as gently but firmly as possible tell her that fighting their way through will probably be the only way to stop the war.
