* ItBeganWithATwistOfFate: While Luffy eating the Enten-Enten no Mi was a major change in canon, smaller actions end up having nearly as big changes.
** Because Luffy ended up on Nami's dinghy rather than simply crossing paths, it allows them to form a rapport that turns Nami's worldview on pirates on its head early on. This eventually turns into friendship and later an intimate romance. It also changes the Arlong Park arc by averting her defection.
** Nami gaining the will to fight early on in the series and losing her [[TheSoCalledCoward normal tactic of hiding behind the fighters unless otherwise occupied]] has her gain a bounty earlier than in canon, which along with Luffy is higher than their original starting bounties, 20 million and 50 million compared to their canon 16 million and 30 million respectively. Zoro hilariously inverts this by starting out ''lower'' at Luffy's original 30 million.
** Miss Valentine joins the crew at Whiskey Peak after Mr. 5 tries to kill her and Luffy.
** Since Luffy is so strong even without showcasing his real powers, Robin is willing to join the crew when she first meets them because all of a sudden, Crocodile isn't a sure bet. She is also immediately made uncomfortably aware that she stands no chance against him when she playfully attempts to take his hat and [[FlashStep doesn't even see him move]] before [[YouAreAlreadyDead his hand is on her hat]]. Luffy doesn't harm her in the slightest, but she still feels a cold chill due to the exchange.
** Without Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek can't properly take on the Straw Hats at Little Garden, forcing the pair to follow them in hopes of killing them later.
** Due to having two additional former Baroque Works members in the crew by the time they reached Alabasta, the [[ShaggyDogStory attempt to resolve the situation without bloodshed]] was shut down before it could start by having it explained in detail why Vivi's plan would not work.

* NormalFishInATinyPond: Luffy is powerful enough to be a serious threat in Paradise, but in the East Blue, he's completely unstoppable. However, this works the other way around as well. When facing against foes who can utilize haki and have the same mastery of the Rokushiki as him, he's still a rookie. An stupidly powerful rookie, yes, but still a rookie going against New World veterans. [[spoiler:This nearly costs him his life while fighting Onigumo, leaving Alabasta]].

* ICantBelieveImSayingThis: Robin never thought she would agree with the World Government on anything, then she learned about Cordyceps, a fungus so terrifying she finds herself being understanding of the World Government using scorched-earth tactics to eradicate any hint of it.

* DieOrFly: Nami finally manages a rankyaku (albeit a rather weak one) while fleeing the Lapahns and the avalanche they caused.

** Despite Smoker's court martial being a KangarooCourt because [[HonorBeforeReason he won't do has the World Government says and take credit for bring down Crocodile]], several legitimate reasons for being court martialed are brought up by Admiral Kizaru, such as desertion of his post and misuse of millitary assets.

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler:While neither Smoker, Tashigi, or Hina believed they were getting away from the Alabasta incident without egg on their face due to Smoker rejecting the propaganda the World Government was spouting, none of them saw the former getting executed. Once the Moku Moku no MI reincarnates, Hina all but force feeds it to Tashigi and the two desert the Marines]].

** While not explicitly stated, it's heavily implied Smoker's crimes[[note]]Desertion, Dereliction of Duty, Misuse of Government Assets, Theft of Government Property, etc[[/note]] would have been completely swept under the rug if he had been at least successful in capturing the Straw Hat crew. The true problem is that he disobeyed orders and failed anyway.

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Miss Goldenweek's Tranquil Green color trap gives Zoro insight into both Observation Haki and how to cut steel.

** Doubling as a LateArrivalSpoiler, [[spoiler:The Nefertari family's status as bearers of the Will of D., along with the secret of the Poneglyphs as well as her letter]], are revealed, 19 arcs and little over 800 chapters before canon.

* FatalFlaw: Smoker's pride is what ultimately does him in. His inability to allow the Straw Hats to escape from his perfect record despite totally outclassing him makes the Marines no longer able to overlook his CowboyCop tendencies which caused Loguetown to once again become overrun with pirates as well as not accepting accolades not his own despite orders from the World Government ends with him being executing after a KangarooCourt. As he's dying, Kizaru asks the commodore as to why he could not have swallowed his pride just this once, to which Smoker's final thought was that he would never do that.

* GenericGraffiti: An {{omake}} in chapter 15 includes some on the Alabasta Poneglyph that serves as a HopeSpot for Crocodile. Unfortunately for him, all it says (with exceptionally poor grammar) is that "Nefertari D. Lili has a fat ass."

*** Another weakness crops up in chapter 15: Tekkai defense only works on parts of the body that have muscles. [[EyeScream Eyes aren't muscles]].

* NoJustNoReaction: One of the first things that breaks through Robin's normal stoicism is Vivi saying that the latter thought she joined Baroque Works to become [[DarkMistress Crocodile's queen]]. The look of utter revulsion and DeathGlare were enough to send Vivi scrambling behind Zoro to hide.

* PyrrhicVictory: Downplayed; soon after leaving Alabasta, the Straw Hats are attacked by ''[[GodzillaThreshold two vice-admirals]]'', and while they are victorious [[spoiler: Zoro's Yubashiri is destroyed and he gains another cut over the one Mihawk gave him and Sanji [[EyeScream loses an eye]], meanwhile, if it wasn't for Nami, Luffy would've drowned]].

* {{Fartillery}}: A literal example. During their fight, Wapol grows a cannon out of his backside and shoots Chopper with it.

* DoWrongRight: Nami would have been fine if Usopp and Sanji were just napping and letting the others takes care of the Whiskey Peak Baroque agents, but she is furious to learn they genuinely fell for the trap.

** Smoker insists on arresting the one pirate crew to escape him, the Straw Hats, along with any pirate he encounters along the way (even if they're ''vastly'' more powerful than him like Ace). Unlike the others, he doesn't find a loophole to work around his principles, which leads to his downfall.

* StatingTheSimpleSolution: When Mr. 3 ponders if there's anyone they could make help him and Miss Goldenweek on Drum Island, she points out that his wax is white and Drum is a winter island, so they'll have the advantage anyway without any extra work.
