** The Paladins, in turn, get one in their favor during Chapter 23, ''Zero's Return'', as Cornelia's forces have ''nothing'' on the Lions.

** Shirley and Milly take traits from Hunk, with Shirley being the one who goes to the Balmera and finds her lion on a Galra mining colony, while Milly is the one to inherit Hunk's cooking and mechanical skills.
** Lelouch and Rai are a decomposites of Shiro, with the former having Shiro's position of the Black Paladin and the latter being the one who was kidnapped by the Galra.

* DoubleMeaningTitle: Chapter 35's title, ''The Bloodstained Alliance'', could refer to both Voltron's alliance with the people of Earth, or to [[spoiler:[[VichyEarth Charles allying Britannia with the Galra]], as both are sealed by the SAZ Massacre]].

** At the end of her InternalMonologue before The Battle of Narita, Cornelia promises that she ''will'' find Lelouch, - after all, it's not like he vanished off the face of the Earth, right?
* ElementalPowers: Each lion is themed after an element detailed under DivergentCharacterEvolution, and these powers have been demonstrated in several chapters:

* {{Foil}}: The Galra Empire can be considered one to the Holy Britannian Empire. Both are tyrannical empires who have conquered countless people and taken away their freedom. The main difference is that Britannia at least gives the conquered people a chance to become "Honorary Britannians," while no such thing exists with the Galra.

** Diethard never joins the Black Knights, due to Zero not being around to get his offer.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When Allura watches Suzaku and Lelouch arguing about how Britannia should be opposed, she briefly feels as though she is watching her father argue with 'someone else'. [[spoiler:It's implied she's thinking about her father and Zarkon talking about whether or not they should use the Quintessence.]]

* InSpiteOfANail: [[spoiler:In spite of Lelouch not accidentally Geassing Euphemia, the SAZ still turns into a bloodbath when Charles defects and the Britannian soldiers who are steadfastly loyal to him join the Galra in attacking the Japanese there.]]

** Chapter 35, ''The Bloodstained Alliance'', has the whole world learn of the Galra Empire, and the identities of five of the Paladins. [[spoiler:Then everyone learns that Charles has joined the Galra.]]

** Shirley struggled when naming the Orange Lion before C.C. suggests "Zinnia" [[note]]According to Rai, Zinnia's are bright orange flowers that bloom shortly after they're planted, and usually, stay in bloom for a lot longer than most. Because of that, one of the things it symbolizes is endurance, but it also stands for lasting affection and daily remembrance.[[/note]].

** When thinking about the members of his family that still care for him and Nunnally, Lelouch brings up [[Manga/CodeGeassOzTheReflection Marrybel]].

** The line where Rakshata tells the Glaston Knights that their suits are meant to keep them alive instead of making it easier to interface with their Knightmares is based off a similar line she gave to Kallen just before the mission to rescue Tohdoh.

** Everyone feels this way in regards to Kallen being so much more assertive and lacking in her sickly demeanor. Of course, readers know that this is simply [[HiddenDepths how she normally acts.]]

** [[spoiler:Hearing Charles not only declare Euphemia and those who support the SAZ as traitors, but allowing the Galra to enact a VichyEarth scheme with Britannia, is one of the few things that ever makes Schneizel angry. Noticeably, this ''isn't'' a case of TranquilFury - Schneizel actually raises his voice and '''''demands''''' an audience with his father]].
* PositiveFriendInfluence: Lelouch having people he can completely trust has made him far nicer than he was in canon, while also allowing him to grow as a leader. Additionally, he's sorted through a fair amount of his family issues that, in canon, costed him dearly.

** It's explicitly pointed out that using the pods to heal Nunnally might not restore her eyesight, as she has psychosomatic blindness and thus, has eyes that are fully functional but willingly keeps them shut, so there is nothing for the pods to heal. [[spoiler:This is so far the only {{Subverted|Trope}} example of this trope, though - the pods heal Nunnally's eyes just fine]].

** Whenever Britannian Knightmares go up against the Lions (let alone Voltron) [[CurbStompBattle they're slaughtered in droves]], be they {{Mooks}} or an AcePilot like Cornelia. Even a [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Knight of the Round]] piloting the [[SuperPrototype Lancelot]] [[CurbStompCushion doesn't last much longer than anyone else]]. For all the advances the Britannians have made in Knightmare production, the Lion's are supernatural alien technology that, even in the hands of inexperienced teenagers, are ''leagues above'' even the most advanced Knightmare. [[spoiler:They don't manage to do more than superficial damage to the Galra during the SAZ Massacre because the alien empire has technology just slightly behind Voltron, and more importantly, have an extreme numbers advantage]].
** Voltron may be the Defender of the Universe, but it can only be in one place at a time. Additionally, there is only so much the seven paladins can do with the numbers they have. [[spoiler:This convinces Lelouch to head back to Earth and bring the Black Knights into the Voltron Coalition, in order to provide the Paladins much needed support.]]
** Lelouch has never won any game against Schneizel, in part because Schneizel is established as being both a better planner and better at adapting to changes than Lelouch was. [[spoiler:When Lelouch has to go against Schneizel to rescue Nunnally, however, his elder brother gets trounced because Schneizel has no meaningful way of working around Voltron's power. There's also no way he could turn the paladins against Lelouch because the latter was completely honest about his past to his friends - he can't reveal Lelouch's secrets because the exiled prince already did that himself.]]
** Coran notes that even if the castle was used to fix Nunnally's legs, she wouldn't just be able to walk on her own - she's been in a wheelchair for seven years and would need a lot of physical therapy to build up the strength in her leg muscles before she could consider walking again.
** When working on space-capable Knightmares to prepare Earth for the Galra, Coran's team runs into the problem that the Knightmares keep running through their energy fillers really fast due to the fact that with no gravity, the Knightmare needs to expend energy to move in any direction, even "down". [[spoiler:Luckily, Rivalz comes up with using Balmera crystals to solve the issue.]]

** ''I Order You'': [[spoiler: For the first time since the Paladins returned Earth, Britainnia hands them a crushing defeat.]]

** ''The Bloodstained Alliance'': [[spoiler:Voltron reveals the existence of the Galra and the need for Earth to unite against them, with the Paladins (save Lelouch and Rai) revealing their identities. However, the Emperor interrupts the event, revealing he's made an alliance with the Galra, and declares all who stand with Voltron traitors before a ''Galra fleet'' invades Earth. Rolo shoots Euphie, several Britannian soldiers join the Galra in firing on the Japanese, and war breaks out in the skies above the SAZ.]]
