Story synopsis: Years ago, a race of aliens tried to settle on Earth. They didn't find it to their tastes, so they created their own planet, which they named [[MagicalLand Rozaniela]]. They also gained a habit of taking in huge troves of orphaned children and babies from Earth, saving them from neglectful or abusive environments to give them the love and care they needed. For many years, their plight was successful until one day, a human boy named [[AxCrazy Zenjin]] got his hands on the [[{{MacGuffin}} Energia]], a jewel containing all the power in the world, and used it to decimate 80% of the planet. Rozaniela's queen, [[BigGood Malgorzata]], asks four fairy sisters to go to Earth and find humans who can become Pretty Cure and stop him from whatever it is he plans to do.

The Pretty Cure turn out to be four young girls: [[ShrinkingViolet Riko]], a shy but gentle autistic girl who just wants to put her traumatic past behind her, be herself without restraint, and have friends, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Marina]], a brash and impulsive tomboy who's sick of being defined by her father's actions, [[PerkyGoth Anzu]], a not!goth girl who wants to watch the world go by without a care in the world and do whatever she wants, and [[TeamMom Hotaru]], a level headed and serene high schooler who has dreams that go far beyond the stars. Thankfully, her father actually knows about Anzu's issues and wants to help her out, and genuinely wishes he could fix everything so they can be happy.

** MineralMacGuffin: It's described as a diamond the size of a small brick.
* MagicMusic: Cure Dusk's attack, Dusk Medley, which involves shooting out fiery musical notes at her enemies.
* MeaningfulName: If written a certain way, Riko's name can be written as "child of truth" or "truthful child" reflecting her casual way of telling the truth and sometimes her well intentioned BrutalHonesty. Her last name, obviously, translates to twilight. Hotaru's name means "firefly," and her last name, Minamigawa, translates to "south river." Marina's last name, Asagi, has asa in it, which means morning. Chino Anzu can translate to "apricot of the earth." Fukiko's name can mean "child of the wind and trees" since "fu" can translate to wind and "ki" can translate to tree. Kyoya's last name, Mitomo, can mean "beautiful friend" if written a certain way.

* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: Riko, Anzu, and Marina all fill this role in different ways. Anzu dresses like a goth but isn't an EmoTeen and just stays on the sidelines, but her classmates are convinced otherwise. Marina is alone because kids don't want to be around a criminal's child, and Riko is much more misunderstood because she's autistic and kids her age just can't fathom why she behaves the way she does.
* MommyIssues: Anzu and her mother don't get along, because the latter wants custody of her in order to take complete control of her life and make her into her perfect child--which really means she doesn't like Anzu for who she is and wants to change her from the inside out so she can be "perfect" in her eyes--and Anzu HATES it. So does her dad, who embraces her individuality and lets her do what she wants because he knows she's a good girl at heart and is happy the way she is.
* MonsterOfTheWeek: Black animals made from people's souls called Corrupt Sentinels by the Pretty Cure, but Zenjin prefers to call them Human Trash, [[DudeNotFunny which doesn't sit well with the girls]].

* NoIndoorVoice: A lot of people accuse Riko of having this. But Zenjin is the one who yells the most in the series.
* NonHumanSidekick: The fairy sisters [[TheHeart Moonbeam]], [[TheSpock Starbeam]], [[GenkiGirl Sunbeam]], and [[SpoiledBrat Lovebeam]]. They do, however, fight with the Pretty Cures whenever possible, and don't just sit around and watch the action.
* NotGoodWithPeople: Riko is capable of getting along with others, but her autism makes it very difficult for her to socialize, know what to do in a public situation, and keep up with what her peers consider normal behavior, like wearing make up and not watching cartoons (especially old ones) outside of her age and gender. It doesn't help that she was ostracized and demonized by everyone she knew back at her old hometown. She is also very fond of cats.
* OddFriendship: Many.
** Loud, reckless, short-tempered, and fiery Marina who's tired of being defined by her father's actions, and shy, kind, soft-spoken, affectionate Riko who's sick and tired of being defined by her autism and mistaken for a bad person.
** Shy, easily scared Riko who's painfully aware of her own problems and the repercussions they cause to both herself and others, and mellow, ambivalent, NightmareFetishist DeadpanSnarker Anzu who tends to ignore her own problems.

* OnlySaneMan: Or rather "Only Sane High Schooler": Hotaru. She's the most wise and down to earth of the girls, next to Anzu.
* OrwellianRetcon: As of this writing, some chapters have encountered some edits in order to [[ShowDontTell show instead of tell]] and to tone down the use of slurs, even though one of the aesops of the story is that using ableist slurs is wrong.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: Beileag, definitely. She's cheerful, perky, and overly emotional, compared to Decebal and Zenjin.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Zenjin, when he gets the Energia. He decimates a planet, kills people, and blows things up because he can, and he seems to enjoy it even more for it.
* PickyEater: Both Rina and Riko. Rina absolutely HATES vegetables, especially spinach, while Riko hates anything that's spicy, sour, or bland.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Riko's bubbly and social classmate [[GenkiGirl Chinami Takayama]] often wears a lot of pink.
* PlayingWithFire: Both Marina (Cure Dusk) and Anzu (Cure Dawn) do this with their powers, only Marina tends to be a bit more reckless and lacks restraint.
* PluckyGirl: Even though she's weak, sensitive to loud noise, and does occasionally cross the DespairEventHorizon, Riko isn't one to let anyone hurt her loved ones or let evil doers go scott free, even when the odds are cruelly against her.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Riko, Kyoya, Anzu, and Marina are pretty much this in their school, Hikaribashi Middle School.
* RapunzelHair: Anzu's hair is ridiculously long, as shown in the authoress's drawings of her.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Zenjin, after he got the Energia.
* RedOniBlueOni: In regards to their classmates, [[GenkiGirl Chinami]] [[PluckyGirl Takayama]] is the red oni, and [[IJustWantToBeNormal Fukiko]] [[NaiveEverygirl Dounowaki]], one of Kyoya's ex-friends, is a blue oni. Marina is a red oni and Riko is a blue oni, but they have moments when it's flip-flopped.
* RoyalRapier: Decebal has one and he's very royal in that he dresses like he came out of the 17th century.
* ScarsAreForever: Marina has a nasty scar on her left cheek. This is because she had an unfortunate run-in with a hysterical woman who was raped by her dad, who attacked her with a garden trowel in a homicidal frenzy, under the hallucination that she was her rapist.

It helps that Zenjin is described as being fifteen years old.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Marina. She's constantly both angry and sad because nobody wants to see past the fact that her dad is a serial rapist.
* SpoiledSweet: Lovebeam may whine a lot, but she does care for her sisters and friends. Anzu comes from a wealthy family (from her mother's side), but she's extremely kind, insightful, and understanding, always trying to be the mediator when there's conflict between her friends.
* ShrinkingViolet: Riko. She's shy and has trouble socializing with others. Marina's mother, Hatoko, also counts, but she's more cripplingly scared of the world than anything due to being raped long ago. Fukiko has some shades of this also, but this is because she doesn't have the courage to talk to Kyoya and patch things up with him.
* TheSociopath: Zenjin. He doesn't care about anything except blowing stuff up.
* StayInTheKitchen: Decebal is always going on chauvinistic rants against the girls, telling them to stop fighting and prepare themselves for marriage. The girls are NOT pleased. He doesn't do it with Beileag, however.
* StellarName: Starbeam and Moonbeam.
* StepfordSnarker: Anzu. She's pretty snarky, but this is one of the ways she tries to cope with her parents' divorce.

* TrueBlueFemininity: Hotaru's theme color is blue, and she is usually the most serene, mature, and down-to-earth of the girls. But she can be quite vicious with her powers and naginata.
* TwoTeacherSchool: COMPLETELY averted. There's a teacher for every class, and all of the classes typically take place in different rooms in the school. This is because the authoress is writing the dynamics of an American type school rather than a Japanese school dynamic, since she is American and lots of it is based on her own school experiences.
* UngratefulBastard: The people of Hikaribashi don't thank Cure Twilight for saving them from Marina's Corrupt Sentinel. Instead, they yell at her and accuse her of being the one responsible for everything! Soon, they start hating the other members of Luminous-Q, but it's more sporadic than anything.
* UnskilledButStrong: This mostly applies to Riko, as she's very strong as Cure Twilight, but can't fight for the life of her, and whenever she does, she unknowingly causes some collateral damage. She's working on this.
* VictimOfTheWeek: similar to ''HeartcatchPrettyCure'' and ''DokiDokiPrettyCure'', the MonsterOfTheWeek are created from them. sometimes it's people they don't know, sometimes it's people they know, like parents or classmates, friends or enemies.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Marina and Riko try their best to get along, but since they have NoSocialSkills, have [[FriendlessBackground spent the majority of their lives with no friends]], and have been through [[KidsAreCruel a lot of]] [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer past traumas]], they often fight, mostly about each other. Marina often berates Riko for her CloudCuckooLander tendencies caused by her autism and often questions her motives, and Riko berates Marina for her HairTriggerTemper and wishes she'd be a little more patient and not make such a big deal out of every little thing she does, and not construe her good intentions as bad.
* VocalDissonance: Zenjin is described as having an unusually high pitched voice, unfitting of his age and character. The authoress admits she imagines him having [[AndrewFrancis Dilandau]] [[VisionOfEscaflowne Albatou]]'s English dub voice.

* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Zenjin. He dyed his hair white with the Energia, and he's very pretty, very vain, and VERY psycho and homicidal.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: Rina always asks Riko, "why can't you be normal, like me?" all the time, and constantly (loudly and repeatedly for all to hear) wishes Riko was normal and not weird, often blaming her for everything bad that goes on and constantly berating her for doing things she doesn't approve of, like talk about cartoons. [[spoiler:Kyoya of all people [[BrutalHonesty viciously]] [[WhatTheHellHero calls her out on it]] and gives her a MASSIVE ReasonYouSuckSpeech that convinces her to change her behavior.]] Accepting that there's nothing wrong with being different and learning to embrace people's differences and eccentricities, NOT wish they be normal for others' convenience, is one of the most prominent [[SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped aesops]] in the series.
* WouldHurtAChild: Zenjin really doesn't care who he hurts. Even ''babies'' aren't safe around him!
** Chapter 13 confirms that Shouji, Marina's dad, got arrested when he was caught raping a 5-year-old girl, killing her, and stuffing her body in a drainage ditch because she threatened to tell on him.
