The '''Avengers Defenders War''' was a 1973 crossover between ComicBook/TheAvengers and TheDefenders.

* MacGuffinMelee: The Vision and the Silver Surfer were both running to claim a piece of the Evil Eye. The Vision was closer... but saw the unconscious Scarlet Witch about to be killed by a lava stream and left the fight to save her, allowing the Silver Surfer to take the prize.

The Enchantress turned the Black Knight into a stone statue, and the Defenders (Dr. Strange, Hulk, Namor, Silver Surfer, Valkyrie and Hawkeye, who had just left the Avengers) sought to help him. Dr. Strange communicated with the Knight's soul, but Dormammu and Loki (who was blind at the moment) changed his message, so that he requested the Defenders to gather the pieces of the Diabolic Eye. Dormammu wanted the Diabolic Eye to move Earth into his own dimension. Loki, fearing that Dormammu may do the same to Asgard, warned the Avengers of it. The Avengers were Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Black Phanter, Mantis and the Swordsman.

After a number of clashes, Captain America and Namor realized that their groups were manipulated nto fighting each other, but it was late: Dormammu took the united pieces of the Diabolic Eye, and began to merge Earth into his own dimension. But he was betrayed by Loki, and defeated by the Scarlet Witch.

* AlternateHistory: After the defeat of Dormammu, the Defenders returned to ther original goal of undoing the spell that turned the Black Knight to stone. They were sent to a comic book version of the Crusades.
* AppeaseTheVolcanoGod: The unconcious Scarlet Witch was about to be a human sacrifice for the erupting volcano, when the crazy natives put her on the way of the lava stream.
* ArgentinaIsNaziland: The Valkyrie and the Swordsman fought in a castle of a runaway nazi.

** [[http://www.wwcomics.com/images/large/Defs_10_94.jpg Defenders 10]]: "The incredible hulk vs. the mighty Thor -- in a battle to the finish!" Not to the finish: the battle ended when Avengers and Defenders mended their differences.

* ExactWords: Dormammu had once attempted to conquer Earth, but he was defeated by Dr. Strange, and forced to an oath of never returning to Earth's dimension again. Thus, he wanted the Diabolic Eye... if he moved Earth to his own dimension, he would conquer it without breaking his oath.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Dr. Strange erased from Nick Fury's mind the knowledge of the existence of the Defenders, but let the Avengers keep theirs.
** During the fight, Dormammu turned Thor and Iron Man into Don Blake and Tony Stark. After it, Dr. Strange erased from everyone else the memory of their secret identities.
* MacGuffinMelee: When it was revealed, the Vision and the Silver Surfer run to the Diabolic Eye. The Vision was closer... but saw the unconcious Scarlet Witch about to be killed by a lava stream, and did not think twince: he left the fight to save her, and the Silver Surfer took the prize. But, as they say, a prize is only a prize if it has value for the wielder.
* NeverMyFault: Loki helped Dormammu and, after doing, he realized the potential problems with that, so he warned the Avengers to stop the Defenders. What what can he told them, exactly? That he made something evil that got out of control, in the hand of someone more evil than him? That he MADE A MISTAKE? No way! Let's just say that the Defenders want to conquer the universe, and that's it.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: As Captain America and Namor trespassed in Japan to take the Diabolic Eye, the Japanese hero Sunfire took it, for the government of Japan. Yes, an Obstructive Bureaucrat who can fire sunbolts... but an Obstructive Bureaucrat nonetheless.
* {{Revision}}: The Diabolic Eye was a MacGuffin item created during Jack Kirby's run on the Fantastic Four, which exploded like an atomic bomb. This story says that it was not actually destroyed, but divided in 6 parts that falled in different parts of the world.

* StableTimeLoop: Averted. The Human Torch met Preste Juan, an immortal who owned the Diabolic Eye. He stole it to open the dome that closed Attilan, but it exploded half the way. It was divided in several pieces, and during this crossover the pieces were located and used to recreate the original thing. And then the Defender were displaced to the past, along with the Diabolic Eye, and they gave it to Preste Juan... some years ''before'' he got it in the first place (so, he will have 2 now?)
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Loki did not want to prevent the destruction of Asgard just because of the kindness of his hearth. "Although I have been vanished from the fabulous realm several times, I'm still an immortal. Only I shall take the power from Odin"
* ThrowingOffTheDisability: Loki was blid, only for this adventure. He joined forces with Dormammu, expecting to be cured from his blindness, [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor and he was... but wouldn't like the way it happened]]
