* BrutalHonesty: Part of the crux of his character and one of the reasons why he's socially isolated by his peers.

* SmugSmiler: Tends to smirk more than he smiles.

* JerkassHasAPoint: A lot of the things he says can come off as uncaring and selfish, but are often the results of logical assessments.

* [[LikeFatherLikeSon Like Grandfather Like Grandson]]: Inherited all his grandfather's loner tendencies and quirks.

* PrinciplesZealot: He's extremely stubborn; this is one of the pillars of his character and it's completely PlayedForLaughs. Paired with his BrutalHonesty, it's one of the prime reasons for why everyone avoids him if at all possible.

* BrokenPedestal: He becomes one for Fujisawa after their date as she realizes he's nothing like the kindhearted, wonderful boy she'd imagined.

* CheerfulChild: Flashbacks depict him as a happy kid, smiling and laughing a lot with big, bright eyes.

* FriendshipDenial: [[ImNotHereToMakeFriends This is]] [[IWorkAlone Yugami]] we're talking about. Chihiro's mother assumes he's friends with Chihiro, but Yugami quickly refutes this, saying that he just sits next to her in class. In the final three chapters, his continuing to say this after spending more time with Chihiro makes the girl snap and leave in frustration, especially since she didn't start to have real friends until she met Yugami.

* ImpliedLoveInterest: To Yugami. There's at least one parallel made between his grandparents and himself and Chihiro. She has a monologue lamenting how she and Yugami have a flimsy connection with one another, and that he'll forget her once they graduate high school. She even blushes when Yugami puts his arm around her shoulders in Chapters 61 and 62 when they become 3-legged race partners.

* ICanStillFight: In chapter 11, he has to be forcibly dragged off the field due to a leg injury. He insists he can still pitch despite barely being able to stand. His teammates literally throw him onto the stretcher. One of them even whacks him for trying to stay on the field.

* LastNameBasis: How he addresses his peers -- [[HeyYou minus Chihiro]] -- and with no honorific attached. Makes sense considering his personality. He does, however, call his upperclassmen in the baseball club "[[SempaiKohai senpai]]." Even when he's disobeying them.

* {{Narrator}}: Yugami is TheProtagonist, but the majority of inner monologues and comments on events in the story are from her perspective.

* OddFriendship: Subverted in an interesting way with Yugami. He's a [[LeaveMeAlone loner]] that says he doesn't need friends and is TheAce -- a good student and the star pitcher of the baseball team -- whereas she's a NewTransferStudent that [[IJustWantToHaveFriends wants to make friends]] but is [[RidiculouslyAverageGuy exceedingly average]] and has no special talents. Despite these differences, other characters often remark that nobody is able to hold a conversation with Yugami the way Chihiro can (although she thinks it's always a rather one-sided one on his part). Still, she and Yugami will always deny being friends.

* SafetyInIndifference: In the past, she'd refrain from making friends to save her the pain of leaving them because her family moved so often. She grows out of it by the start of the series because her family is here to stay in the area for years to come, so she's desperate to make friends.

TheProtagonist and [[TheAce ace]] of the Kamihoshi baseball team, he is the first person Chihiro meets when she transfers into Kamihoshi. He tends to do things at his own pace, always marching to the beat of his own drum. He is notoriously known as a troublesome weirdo amongst not only his baseball club teammates, but also his classmates and this causes him to be isolated by his peers. However, being alone doesn't faze Yugami at all, and he claims he doesn't need friends. His birthday is October 17th.

* TheProtagonist: Chihiro is the {{Narrator}} but much of the story focuses on him. In an odd case, Yugami doesn't have any [[InnerMonologue inner monologues]] despite being the central character, but the rest of the cast does.

* SupportingProtagonist: [[IJustWantToHaveFriends Her plight]] is an ongoing plot point, but Yugami is the TheProtagonist by virtue of having much of the story follow him while Chihiro mainly serves as the {{Narrator}} and spectator who gets dragged into Yugami's life.

* SmugSuper: He knows how important he is to the baseball club and how the team needs him to win. This isn't necessarily him being arrogant, but rather his logical conclusion based on his assessment of the level of skill his teammates are capable of. There's also his proud declaration of being a self-sufficient individual without a need for friends.

* SmugSuper: He can come off as this in the baseball club, and his teammates see him as this. He also comes off as rather condescending when he says he doesn't need friends, unlike...well, everybody else.

* TemptingFate: Early on in the series, Yugami tells Chihiro that he lives his life "properly" and in such a way that he doesn't ever need to rely on others. Later in the exact same chapter, he's put into a situation where he needs to receive help from Chihiro so he can make club activities on time. This becomes a [[RunningGag recurring theme]] in the story, with Yugami receiving help from Chihiro and [[DebDetester finding ways to repay her]].
