* SpiritedCompetitor: A memorable one, because he also lacks the BloodKnight tendencies of some of the other characters Yusuke meets. He encourages Yusuke to focus on the thrill of fighting someone as powerful as he is, clean and fair - and he's noticeably even more disgusted by the unfair attempts to rig the fight than Touya was, losing interest in the battle entirely until seeing Yusuke in action.

* WeakButSkilled: He has an amazing capacity for spiritual energy--unfortunately, [[DeconstructedTrope he thought this was enough to make him strong.]] Grows out of this after his HeelFaceTurn.

* EvilGloating: Constantly gloats throughout his battle of wits, mockingly challenging Kurama to use words that they're about to lose access to, showing off his wide vocabulary and in general lording over the fact that he can speak normally with no effort despite losing more and more of the alphabet. However, this isn't a sign of foolishness as it usually would be - though Kurama half-heartedly suggests that he could get too excited showing off and make a mistake, they both know that Kaito is far too intelligent to actually mess up. Instead, the gloating itself shows of that he is far too skilled to defeat by his own rules, requiring drastic action.

* TheStoic: He is extremely impassive and rarely panics or shows emotion other than mild amusement. Kurama ultimately defeats him by proving he is NotSoStoic and making him laugh at the worst possible moment, but [[spoiler: even afterwards he's the least affected of the human characters by the extraordinary or horrible things around them - in fact, when Kurama is forced to kill Amanuma, unlike everyone else - who are clearly bothered - the only reaction we see from Kaito is the shine from his glasses as he looks on as stony as ever. Only ''Hiei'' remained so cool in the same scene.]]

* BewareOfViciousDog: Kaizei and Fubuki enjoy their spiritual powers to the point where they voluntarily head out to their yard to ''kill off'' whoever intrudes their family property. And their mom gladly hangs a "Beware of Dogs" sign at their gateway to warn intruders on how ferocious her kids are.
* BrotherSisterTeam: The siblings have spirit moves that they create together, one of them is a type of KamehameHadouken that the two would [[FinishingMove execute]] together.

* ComboPlatterPowers: Most Human Psychics have a single power with maybe a couple thematically derived variations. Not Kaito: his power allows him to both neutralize violent attacks and suck his enemies's souls through certain rules, two very different and technically unrelated abilities.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: Wears only ankle wraps.
* {{Expy}}: Of Peter Pan. Both are free spirited young men with the ability to fly, have a dislike of authority figures, have a special emphasis on their ability to fly, and have elf-like ears. The Irish accent in the dub and the wind powers helps him resemble a elf/fairy as well. His prize for winning the Dark Tournament was going to be a giant island for crying out loud.

* FunPersonified: Yusuke can't keep his angry mood for half a minute when holding a conversation with Jin - which is just what Jin wanted: he hates going into battle with grudges.

* KnightOfCerebus: Two ways. His appearance to Yusuke marks the point when the series takes a ''much'' darker turn, and when Yusuke comes to the realization that brawn and power don't win every fight.

* RedemptionDemotion: Back when he was an antagonist, he was quite a threat, to the point he had almost the entire team defeated and it took a healthy effort by Kurama to beat him. However, after he turns into a good guy, he devolves into a mere intellectual consultant for the team.

* SuperpowerLottery: The power and influence of his ability make him technically one of the strongest psychics in the arc, including the Sensui Seven; it's his own arrogance which brings him down.

* AdaptationalHeroism: He makes his introduction by taking out two cowardly members of his own team. There's a difference between the manga and the anime, though: in the former, he beheads them, while in the latter, he simply knocks them out offscreen and tosses them away.

* ShoutOut: Chu has a strong physical resemblance to Wez from Film/MadMax2TheRoadWarrior. Funimation's English dub takes this allusion further by having Chu voiced with an Australian accent.

* BoisterousWeakling: Summed up by Genkai that while he had plenty of tricks that helped him win fights, [[spoiler:it was all a smokescreen to hide the fact that he had jack in terms of genuine strength or firepower. She punctuated the fact by beating the crap out of him.]]

* GadgeteerGenius: Suzuki's primary skill is his ability to research, and invent gadgets, potions, and spells to enhance the abilities for his clients.
** All of Team Uraotogi's tricks and gimmicks were developed by him, and gift items originally meant for Shishiwakamaru and Uraurashima down to Kuwabara and Kurama to help them compete against Team Toguro.

* RedemptionDemotion: He was the one who captured Yusuke himself, but is beaten up by Murota and paralyzed by Doctor within two episodes after he becomes a good guy. Justified in both cases, though, as the first could read his mind to anticipate his ability and the second took him by surprise.

* BadassPacifist: ''Literally''. His power completely bans violence of any kind, and the only way to beat him is to outsmart him in word games. Considering just how freaking intelligent the guy is, ''good luck.''

* DramaPreservingHandicap: In the {{Shonen}} context of the series, his ability is staggeringly powerful: by banning the usage of violence in his territory, he nullifies the strengths of almost all the cast, which happens to be mostly composed of martial artists and warriors; and through his ability to take their souls via Taboo, he forces them to level down the hamminess and watch out for every spoken word, clearly not a skill transferable from their usual battle smarts. However, this power also affects Kaito himself, which creates a dangerous shortcoming when paired with his InsufferableGenius nature.

* ForgottenPhlebotinum: He never uses his power again after joining Team Urameshi, despite that it would have been highly useful against Amanuma.

* TheHeavy: A reduced version. Although Kido is the appointed leader of the trio, it's Kaito who puts the longest and toughest fight against the heroes.
** Justified with Kaito's power manifested in the form of his skill advantage, linguistics, the subject in which Kurama admits he has a lower-hand to.

* MeaningfulName: Kaito's name [[Main/{{Pun}} phonetically]] means "Ghost Thief," one can only wonder why he steals the souls of up to three of our main characters. But his Kanji is written as "Gentle Sea Vine," revealing his true nature.

* SecretKeeper: Upon becoming a Human Psychic, he became the one-and-only close friend in Kurama's school circle who knows Kurama's identity as a demon, and Kurama's whereabouts in the last arc.

* AdaptationalWimp: In the manga, he uses his ability to great affect against Gamemaster by copying Kaito's videogame smarts to score a point. This doesn't happen in the anime.

* PowerCopying: He not only copies the physique of his target, but also the target's memories and basic abilities as well. Although whether he can copy ''psychic'' skills like his own is unknown.
** His abilities in ''100% Maji Battle'' confirm he can copy his teammates' skill set, albeit limited to "mimicking the attack" (Scratch damage to opponent rather than the full blow damage of the original skill user.) but allowed to apply the secondary affects from his copy target's original attack. * HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Stocked with loads of alcohols in her cabinet, she offers drinks to under-age kids like Yusuke as if it was nothing, ''even her own children!''
** The anime [[Main/{{Bowdlerise}} bowdlerised]] her actions by giving Yusuke and her kids a piece of "whisky candy" mixed in with coffee to not offend the MoralGuardians.

* DudeWheresMyRespect: Mr. Satou is visibly unhappy about his children not liking his surname, to make matters worse, his wife comforts him by saying, "let them be kids, they'll grow out of it sooner or later."

* WouldntHitAGirl: Fubuki comments to Yusuke that it's impossible for her brother, Kaizei to become a Spirit Detective due to him being unable to beat girls in battle.

In the manga, his last appearance shows him spending his day off mostly playing video games and writing.
