* EqualOpportunityEvil: They'll help both evil and not-so-evil clients, so as long as they are willing to pay up well, with either money or their souls.
* EvilInc: They specialize in helping villains, killing heroes, and making all worlds a darker place.
* EvilVsEvil: Many times, the Organization ends up clashing against other evil groups and entities in pursuit of satisfying customers, such as rival villains, [[NominalHero not-so-heroic heroes]] and eldritch entities.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Black Hat (Choleric), Flug (Melancholic), Demencia (Sanguine), 5.0.5 (Phlegmatic).

* VillainProtagonist: The outstanding example within the group is Black Hat but all of them serve the whims of humanity's evil in their own way. Certainly the series' main focus is their exploits, as dastardly as those may be.
* VillainousFriendship: Averted with [[BadBoss Black Hat]], but played straight between Flug, 5.0.5., and, to a lesser extent, Demencia. Flug and 5.0.5. share a close father-son relationship, and while Demencia likes to screw with Flug, she isn't above having fun with them every now and then, like when they toured Mexico at the end of "The VVV". According to [[WordOfGod Alan Ituriel]], 5.0.5. treats and thinks about Demencia as his older sister.
* VillainsOutShopping: Black Hat's minions can often end up like this when their mission ends and Black Hat feels sadistic enough to leave them on their own devices to get back to the base. Notably in ''The VVV'' Flug, 5.0.5 and Demencia end up having a normal fun time in Mexico after Black Hat ditches them there. Black Hat does this sometimes, like shopping for a puppy... to eat.

* AdaptationalBadass: His original version was a villainous sort but nowhere near even implied to be the borderline EldritchAbomination InvincibleVillain he's in the series proper.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Adding to the above, he goes from minor deeds and celebrating the apocalypse to outright causing apocalypses and practically doing all sorts of cruel things anytime he's onscreen.
* AdmiringTheAbomination: He has something resembling awe and respect of [[WesternAnimation/AdventureTime the Lich]]. Knowing the Lich's history, it's hard not to see why.
* AncientEvil: Considering he's portrayed as [[TheManBehindTheMan the benefactor]] to ''every single'' Cartoon Network villain, it's heavily implied he's been around since the beginning of TheMultiverse itself.
* AlwaysABiggerFish: He's ''the'' biggest fish, knows it, and makes sure everyone else does, as well.
* ArmsDealer: The Black Hat Organization's purpose. The orientation videos reveal him to be the supplier of [[WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor the Delightful Children]], [[WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls Mojo Jojo]], [[WesternAnimation/Ben102016 Vilgax]], and even [[WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack Aku]]. And those are just a few of the '''many''' villains that are subsidiaries of the Black Hat Organization, and not just those limited to the Cartoon Network multiverse, since he's bought and is now the new owner of [[VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys Freddy Fazbear Entertainment]], and is also the benefactor of [[Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean Davy Jones]], ''[[Franchise/AlienVsPredator the Xenomorphs and Predators]]'', [[Characters/SupermanRoguesGalleryMToZ Mongul]], ''ComicBook/{{Darkseid}}'', and '''Franchise/{{Cthulhu|Mythos}}'''.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Black Hat is described as evil incarnate. [[WesternAnimation/RegularShow Pops]] likens his very presence to all evil in the universe gathered in one place.
* AxCrazy: Beneath the professionalism, Black Hat is a violent psychopath who enjoys villainy in all its forms. This is especially apparent whenever he loses his temper or becomes excited.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Possibly '''the''' most powerful being in the Cartoon Network multiverse and is never seen outside of his black and red suit, tie, and top hat.
* BadassLongcoat: A black one.
* BadBoss: He's not a pleasant boss to work for, least of all toward his crew, especially [[ButtMonkey Dr. Flug and 5.0.5.]].
** Cartoon Chronicles portrays him as one of the bosses of the RealLife staff, and he's hardly a pleasant boss here either, though Diego, the writer, seems to think otherwise.
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: Just in case his treatment of 5.0.5. didn't tip you off, he melts puppies in his spare time. Interestingly, he does has a pet snake named Lil' Jack.
* BerserkButton: Downplayed. He's quick to anger in general, but few things set him off more than the VillainBall. [[WesternAnimation/OKKOLetsBeHeroes Lord Boxman]], [[WesternAnimation/RegularShow Malum Kranus]], and [[WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack Aku]] earned his ire for their incompetence while [[WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls Mojo Jojo]] got a tongue lashing for [[CreateYourOwnHero creating his very own arch-enemies]].
** On a much smaller note, he loathes heroes wearing top hots, as demonstrated by his hatred of [[WesternAnimation/RegularShow Pops]].
* BigBad: As the founder of the Black Hat Organization and VillainProtagonist of the series, he fills the role by default, and his connections to other villains makes him the ultimate antagonist for the entirety of Cartoon Network.
** He takes center stage in the ''WesternAnimation/VictorAndValentino'' crossover episode, ''Villainy in Monte Macabre'', where he sends Flug and Demencia to capture a heroic squid creature ([[spoiler:[=CaCao=]]]) that's been causing trouble for one of his clients.
* TheCameo: In the ''WesternAnimation/OKKOLetsBeHeroes'' episode "Crossover Nexus", he's among the various CN characters (most of them being heroes) who have been [[TakenForGranite turned to stone]] by [[BigBad Strike]] and stands out among them by being a VillainProtagonist. The ''Orientation Q&A'' video reveals that this was actually the perfect clone Black Hat made of himself in "The Perception of Evil."
* CardCarryingJerkass: In accordance to his immorality, he's openly proud of his terrible behavior toward others.
* CardCarryingVillain: He proudly wears his evil on his sleeve.
* CharacterBlog: He has a (currently inactive) [[https://ask.fm/SombreroNegro ask.fm accaunt]]
* ClassicVillain: Given the heavy implication that he's one of the first, if not ''the'' first, villains in all of CN history, it shouldn't be a surprise that the man(?) is classic in more than one way. So far, he embodies {{Ambition|IsEvil}}, {{Pride}}, {{Wrath}}, {{Greed}}, and {{Sloth}}:
** '''Ambition''': Was once a GalacticConqueror who enslaved countless worlds and now sells his talents and resources to see other villains succeed over heroes.
** '''Pride''': To the degree he considers himself the greatest being of evil and that other villains are beneath him.
** '''Greed''': Runs the biggest supervillain service organization, and is very itchy for money, [[YourSoulIsMine and other forms of currency]].
** '''Wrath''': Has a frighteningly [[HairTriggerTemper short fuse]].
** '''Sloth''': Nowadays spends his time [[OrcusOnHisThrone sitting at home, letting his minions do all work]]. Though, this can be justifiable, since he's retired.
* TheCollector: He tends to have a variety of trophies and treasures in his house. From some standard ones such as Fabergé eggs and portraits of himself, to the statute of his clone, to even [[WesternAnimation/OverTheGardenWall the Beast's]] head mounted on his wall and [[WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse Steven's]]/[[spoiler:Pink Diamond's]] gem framed.
* CoolSword: The Black Hat Magisword. It is a sword, shaped like his hat, that fires a laser that can destroy a ''planet''.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: If [[BadBoss the way he treats his subordinates didn't tip you off]], he makes it very clear in his Medusa experiment that you'd better buy his stuff... ''or else''.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Black Hat has intentionally created a few bad guys himself. For example, he's the one who turned Mascara Macabra in an EvilMask and turned Deenah Lindbergh into Mother Poltergeist.
* CutLexLuthorACheck: Averting this is Black Hat's whole deal. Despite being completely and totally evil, he no longer plans to take over the world or defeat any heroes (at least for now). Instead, he sells the goods and services to help other villains do it.
* DarkIsEvil: Looks, dresses, and very much acts the trope.
* DastardlyWhiplash: He definitely invokes the look ([[ManOfWealthAndTaste black tuxedo and top hat]], [[HighClassGlass monocle]] and [[EvilBrit British accent]]) and the mannerisms (prone to {{Villainous Breakdown}}s, BadBoss tendencies, and an overall UngratefulBastard) the difference being with everyone else in the trope is that it's implied that he's actually a successful villain. He used to have the mustache to match during the heyday of the American Frontier era, but has since shaved it off.
* DealWithTheDevil: After his minions fulfill his part of the bargain for Penumbra, he has her sign a contract while sporting a terrifying SlasherSmile. The Faustian nature of the contract becomes apparent in a FreezeFrameBonus where Penumbra apparently signs over her soul; once she does so, a part of her shadow ends up merging with Black Hat's own.
* DecoyProtagonist: Downplayed. He's still the face of the series, and the central character but the Orientation mini-series starts to shift him into a peripheral role, while Flug, Demencia, and 5.0.5. come to the forefront as the actual protagonists the series follows. This continues into the pilot proper, with Black Hat merely dispatching his minions to deal with heroes while he handles the business side of things.
* DemonLordsAndArchdevils: See GodOfEvil and OurDemonsAreDifferent.
* DoWrongRight: His orientational videos is about that. VillainBall is probably his biggest BerserkButton.
* TheDreaded: Everyone who knows about him, from cosmic entities to regular villains, knows that they should fear and respect him, or they will pay for it greatly. Not that doing so guarantees your safety anyway.
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: He celebrates the approaching [[MayanDoomsday 2012 apocalypse]] during the original shorts. Silly Flug! He doesn't celebrate Christmas after all!
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While Black Hat himself doesn't seem to have any high standards, he, along with his clone and Flug, were outright disgusted with the Dopey Black Hat in one of the shorts.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: {{Downplayed|Trope}} - Black Hat understands that ThePowerOfLove and ThePowerOfFriendship exist, and are quite effective at opposing villains. His ways of countering them, however (namely the Dapura Repulsa flower) miss the point of why these powers work in the first place - they're unconditional.
* EvilDebtCollector: If someone takes a loan from Black Hat, he ''will'' see it paid one way or another. Metauro made the mistake of taking a hefty loan from the Organization and Black Hat had his family kidnapped and put under threat of death should Metauro not WorkOffTheDebt.
* EvilerThanThou:
** Considers himself this to all of the villains of Cartoon Network, even well known heavy-hitters like Vilgax and Aku. Even when his own subordinates are bickering and/or annoying each other, Black Hat winds up doing something far worse. One example is Demencia torturing 5.0.5. by scratching her nails on a chalkboard. What does Black Hat do? He scratches the chalkboard so hard, it tears a portal into a hellish dimension, causing everyone physical pain.
** Ironically ends up on the opposing end as seen in the ''WesternAnimation/OKKOLetsBeHeroes'' crossover special, "Crossover Nexus" where he is turned to stone like his fellow Cartoon Network protagonists. It's later subverted, as the Q/A reveals it was a Black Hat duplicate that was turned to stone, assuming that Black Hat wasn't lying to save face.
* EvilBrit: His English voice has a slimy Cockney accent.
* EvilEyebrows: His eyebrows are ''huge'', even [[DisembodiedEyebrows stretching past his face]], though it has been confirmed that they're not eyebrows. They're [[BizarreAlienBiology antennae]]!
* EvilFeelsGood: He lives and breathes evil, and ''really'' gets out a kick out of being the most vile bastard he can be.
* EvilIsPetty: Being a CardCarryingVillain who relishes in committing ''any'' acts of evil, Black Hat will kick even the smallest dogs for the satisfaction it will bring.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Occasionally, his voice will sink to this, usually when he's highly emotional.
* EvilSoundsRaspy: He combines the above trope with this.
* EvilWearsBlack: Wears a black tuxedo and top hat.
* ExorcistHead: Black Hat does this before turning the rest of his body in "Bad Security".
* ExperiencedProtagonist: Has conquered, enslaved, and outright destroyed countless heroes, civilizations, and worlds before we see him in retirement by the start of the series.
* EyeBeams: Among his abilities, he can shoot [[EnergyWeapon Frickin' Laser Beams]] from his eyes that can zap anything.
* FangsAreEvil: Has a mouth full of teal fangs.
* FantasticRacism: He openly admits to viewing humans as inferior and that he sees no difference between an ape like Mojo Jojo and a regular human.
* FauxAffablyEvil: As shown when speaking to customers like Penumbra and Adelita, Black Hat is capable of acting polite enough, but of course he's just trying to smooth-talk them into [[DealWithTheDevil signing contracts that demand a high price for his services, usually their souls]].
* ForTheEvulz: There are more than a few occasions where Black Hat commits evil for evil's sake. His regular abuse of his subordinates is just one such example.
* GalacticConqueror: The Vilgax orientation reveals him to be a successful conqueror of multiple worlds and civilizations.
* GreaterScopeVillain: '''THE''' GreaterScopeVillain for ''all'' of Cartoon Network. He's depicted as the greatest evil in the CN Multiverse who provides the means for the {{Big Bad}}s to be successful villains, [[TheManBehindTheMan but he never confronts their respective heroes.]]
* GodOfEvil: Heavily implied. podemosbailar.com even reveals that he literally has his own cult of worshipers named "la doctrina del sombrero" (the hat doctrine).
* HairTriggerTemper: Even the slightest setback or mistake on the part of his minions quickly sends him into a rage; usually when one of Flug's inventions doesn't function properly.
* HateSink: Downplayed. There is literally nothing remotely good in him, as far as we've seen. He's nailed down kicking dogs and generally being unpleasant to an art form. However, how he carries himself due to how powerful and impressive he is, along with being a VillainProtagonist, means the audience can't help but like how inexplicably awesome he is.
* TheHeartless: He specifically describes himself as a heartless creature, as well as why the Dapura Repulsa flower didn't work on him.
* HellFire: Summons it when considerably enraged. It's bright crimson.
* HeroKiller: It has been implied multiple times that he had slain countless heroes before his retirement, until he finally outright says so in the Questionnaire Short. But even after his retirement from active villainy, he's dead set on making the era of heroes fall by selling his many services to other villains who pay for them.

* IGaveMyWord: Sometime after the events of the pilot, he removed Sunblast from Demencia's stomach and handed him over to Penumbra, exactly as agreed. Note, this is the ''only'' time Black Hat upholds his end of a bargain without it remotely backfiring on his client.

* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Black Hat seemed sympathetic at first when he sees 5.0.5 crying over a dropped ice cream cone, since he managed to retrieve it for him with his powers, only to transform it into a monster and scare off 5.0.5. Black Hat then scares said ice cream cone for good measure.
* KickTheDog: Expect him to do this anytime he's onscreen, especially Flug and 5.0.5. According to WordOfGod, he melts puppies as a pass time whenever he's ''bored''. In episode 5 of the series, it's confirmed that he also eats those for lunch.
* LaughablyEvil: He's definitely a menace and dead-serious in his villainous exploits, but his sly and duplicitous behavior and exasperation with his minions' antics are quite amusing.
* LeanAndMean: He's not as lean as Dr. Flug, but definitely mean as a BadBoss villain.
* LondonGangster: Black Hat might garb himself with classy clothing, but he's an incorrigible thug through-and-through. The English dub goes one step further by giving him a slimy Cockney accent.
* TheManBehindTheMan: For practically ''every'' CN BigBad. His goods and services are one of the primary reasons they're successful villains.
* MasterActor: In one short, he puts his {{Shapeshifting}} to good use and scares Demencia by posing as 5.0.5 and giving a sudden roar and a NightmareFace. Ironically, Demencia had just dressed up as Black Hat and was trying to scare who she thought was 5.0.5.
* MeaningfulName: Cowboy films from the 20s-40s often had [[ColourCodedforYourConvenience the heroes wearing white hats while the villains wore black ones]]. The term "Black Hat" is still used today as a shorthand for villains. With the reveal that Black Hat isn't his real name, it's likely he took up the name as a catch-all alias.
* MesACrowd: Utilizing one of Flug's devices, he creates the most evil thing he can think of: [[ItsAllAboutMe Himself]].
* MoodSwinger: One moment, he's advertising his products as any shady dealer would. The next, he's convulsing with rage and, eventually, descends into hate-filled madness for a short-while.
* MrFanservice: One of his clones, named [[MeaningfulName Black Hot]], is this to a T, complete with exaggerated muscles and poses, much to Demencia's excitement.
* {{Narcissist}}: [[ItsAllAboutMe Setting aside his massive ego]], Black Hat lives and breathes this trope. [[LackOfEmpathy He's unwilling to empathize with others,]] [[KickTheDog and is all too happy to step on them for his own benefit.]] [[CorruptCorporateExecutive He's a morally bankrupt business tycoon]] [[ConsummateLiar who will lie through his teeth to get what he wants.]] [[FauxAffablyEvil He's capable of putting up a professional front when it's convenient]] [[AxCrazy but barely conceals how much of a violent psychotic he is.]] He also never misses an opportunity to flaunt his superiority over others, constantly talking down to other villains, and being on such a high league of his own, the closest any villain can get to him is "Almost Black Hat".
* NiceHat: His top hat, and if his first clone is anything to go by, underneath it he wears an English bowler.
* NightmareFace: He's pretty fond of flashing these when he's out to terrify someone (usually his subordinates).
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: Comes naturally to him, being basically an AnthropomorphicPersonification of Evil and CartoonishSupervillainy. Due to being [[TheSociopath a sociopath]] done rather straight ''and'' a grade A HumanoidAbomination with {{LovecraftianSuperpower}}s, he presents an incredibly dark example of CartoonishSupervillainy.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: The only reason to explain his security systems, which even dwarf the house they're protecting.
* NonActionBigBad: Justified. While he's ''more'' than capable of destroying heroes personally, he's currently retired and more concerned with running his business and employing agents to do his bidding.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: He likes to gloat ''after'' he completed his plans and he likes to do evil things as quickly and simple as possible. And [[DoWrongRight he wants the same from other villains]].
* ObviouslyEvil: Just look at the picture above. Does he look like a good guy? And including the fact that he's a {{Shapeshifter}}, that's InvokedTrope.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: According to Mojo Jojo's ''Orientation'' Video, Black Hat isn't his real name, as apparently people saying his real name gives them a bit of a case of '''[[SpeakOfTheDevil death]]'''.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Justified. Since he's retired from active villainy, Black Hat is content to just run his business, selling goods and services to other villains or sending his agents to personally provide aid where necessary. Also, because the show follows the exploits of his crew, it's just as likely this trope is in effect to keep Black Hat from resolving every conflict himself, which he can very well do given his immense power.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Despite having a deep connection to fire, it's not exactly clear ''what'' he is, but he's definitely some sort of malevolent entity.
* PetTheDog:
** In the most absolute minuscule way imaginable, but when Flug reminds him that Mojo Jojo is a Platinum member of the Black Hat Organization, he makes the effort to try and limit the amount of barbs he throws at the chimp. Keep in mind he does ''not'' extend this courtesy to Aku, who has also purchased products from the Black Hat Organization on a lesser level than Mojo.
** As shown in Penumbra’s CharacterBlog, he eventually removed Sunblast from Demencia’s stomach and gave the hero over to said client, exactly as he promised. Note that he has been perfectly willing to go back on his word, as the orientation videos have shown.
* PragmaticVillainy: Black Hat relishes in committing even the most petty acts of villainy, but he's ''not'' StupidEvil. He doesn't like or care about his minions on a personal level and is annoyed by their antics, but keeps them around because they get results. The same applies to his business conduct; while slimy and not above threatening customers, Black Hat understands that keeping his business afloat means maintaining a decent relationship with his clientele.
* PsychopathicManchild: Given all of his clear experience and intelligence, it is quite shocking to see how quickly and frequently Black Hat loses his cool at the smallest problem or slight thrown his way. Add the fact that [[CardCarryingVillain he uses his powers to mess with, torture, and outright murder anyone and anything within his vicinity at any given moment]], he can honestly come across as a cruel child or teenager given too much power rather than malevolent force of nature he actually is with how he acts.
* RealityWarper: His powers dip into shades of his - at one point, he got so angry he caused the Pompeii eruption. Yup.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Is never seen outside of his black and red suit and is the most vile creature in the show bar none.

So scarily effective is she at combat in fact, that in ''"The Dreadful Dawn"'', where as Dr. Flug believed they'd need a special [[UpToEleven 30+ step]] plan in order to defeat the sun-powered FlyingBrick hero Sunblast, Demencia scoffs at needing something as complex as his plan, and confidently proclaims that all they need to do is beat him up, and that she could do it by herself. But when Sunblast arrives, and she charges in with zero-planning beyond just getting into a slugging match with the hero, ''she actually has him on the ropes.''
