* IrishNames: Camille's last name is Irish (O'Connell). The name O'Connell is an anglicized form of Gaelic "Ó Conaill" and it means 'descendant of Conall'.

* DuesExitMachina: Freya is second only to Dahlia in terms of magical power, and was able to turn Esther into a murder of ravens. She's even powerful enough to defeat Finn, making her a threat to Elijah and Klaus. The writers have used the "she is busy/out of town/drunk" excuse with her several times to stop her from being able to solve problems for the protagonists.

* SquishyMage: After Dahlia's death, Freya becomes mortal again. While that leaves her more vulnerable than the rest of her siblings, she's still a very powerful witch.

* DeathBySex: [[spoiler: She kills herself under compulsion after she sleeps with Klaus for the first time and this death resulting in her becoming a vampire.]]

* GoodAllAlong: Played straight and subverted; Marcel wants to control the witches and prevent them from doing magic because they were willing to sacrifice four teenage girls (and did sucessfully sacrifice three) as well as hexing a young man to go on a killing spree. Marcel is obviously disgusted by the act, and this disgust at what they did certainly played a role in his rescue of Davina and the restrictions on witchcraft.
** He has shown more traits to show that he is this so far so its mostly played straight, he was not willing to feed on the innocent or allow his vampires to do so when they were all extremely starving which was caused by a spell and he absolutely refused to feed on own men back in WW1.

* TheMenFirst: Shown when he bowed to Klaus rather then lose any more of his people. Also in WW1 when looking after the soldiers in his battalion.

* GoodAllAlong: Played straight and subverted; Marcel wants to control the witches and prevent them from doing magic because they were willing to sacrifice four teenage girls (and did sucessfully sacrifice three) as well as hexing a young man to go on a killing spree. Marcel is obviously disgusted by the act, and this disgust at what they did certainly played a role in his rescue of Davina and the restrictions on witchcraft. However, it is subverted in that he also wanted to prevent the massacre to keep the witches from gaining another source of power.

* HeroAntagonist: While 'hero' is a bit of a stretch, it's not hard to imagine how Marcel could be seen as a more heroic figure than Klaus or the witches. From Marcel's point of view he's a vampire king with loyal followers who he treats like extended family, an adopted daughter he loves and saved, running a city in a fairly legitimate (for a vampire) fashion that doesn't clearly disadvantage the humans. His rivals are the witches who are willing to sacrifice teenage girls for power and his sire and father-figure Klaus, who is sadistic, volatile and prefers to rule by fear rather than respect.

* AntiHero: Has shades of this. While he rules with an iron fist. [[PragmaticVillainy He seeks to rule by co-operation when he can.]] Runs a city full of vampires but his city has less human casualties then Mystic Falls due to his supervision. Is protective of Children. Also has personally [[LawfulEvil never gone on a murderous rampage or turned off his humanity in over two centuries of life.]] Also unlike the Mikaelsons earns loyalty from his followers [[GoodKing not through fear but through earning it .]]

** Children to him are the line that must never be crossed with him. He broke the peace they had with Witches back in season one to prevent innocent girls being sacrificed. He also made Hayley and Hope off limits during their exile despite Klaus numerous enemies wanting to go after them.

** Also , he doesn't believe in wholesale slaughter of innocents no matter how hungry you are. Because even immortals [[{{TheWire}} have to live by a code...]]
