* AmbiguouslyGay: There's quite a bit of HoYay between Newt and Thomas, as he sometimes shows jealously towards Teresa and Brenda, and doesn't seem nearly as interested in Teresa as the other Gladers. Fans almost always ship him with either Thomas, Minho, or Alby.

* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Subverted and later played straight, she tries to sacrifice herself to save the immunes from a Griever but Thomas saves her. Later, she pushes Thomas out of the way of some rubble and is crushed instead.]] In ''Film/MazeRunnerTheDeathCure'', She falls to her death when the WCKD headquarters collapses.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: She honestly believed that WICKED was going to spare Thomas if she did what they said, NO, and this judgement is worsened in the movies as even after she sees Janson and the rest of Wicked slaughtering the Right Arm, she still thinks that WICKED is good, Really.
* {{Hypocrite}}: At least in The Death Cure movie as she states that she can protect Thomas and Newt from the cruel treatment of WICKED is they come with her but Thomas immediately calls her out on how she "protected Minho" (sarcastically), betraying him and having many people kidnapped, tortured, and killed.

* FountainOfMemes: Of all the characters in Maze Runner, he's probably spawned the most iconic quotes, i.e "Great, we're all bloody inspired" and [[spoiler: pretty much every line from his death scene.]] Then there's the Mama Newt meme, which features TMR scenes with captions about Newt acting like an overprotective mother.

* StoicWoobie: And how. He's overwhelmed with guilt and depression from his friends who died in the Glade. When he [[spoiler: tries to take his own life]], it doesn't work. He buries all of his pain and any regard for his own well-being deep inside for the sake of his fellow Gladers. And when he's told he [[spoiler: has The Flare, he tries to keep a cool head about it, even though he's terrified.]] Poor guy.

* NightmareFetish: In a deleted scene, Newt mentions how Clint always wants to amputate the arms or legs of Gladers, even when all they have is a simple scratch.

* MenOfShirwood: In action sequences, [[RedShirt the ones that don’t die]] do pretty well fending off Grievers. Three of the Gladers end up escaping the maze with the main cast.

* OffWithYourHead: Poor Frankie is horrifically decapitated by a metal object in the second book.
