First, he starts the shootout at the beginning of the movie by sniping a drug dealer who he thought was going to kill Fabio, when he actually was taking money out of his pocket to bribe a policeman. * NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Twice in the first film. The first, early on, is when they "use the system against the system" so that Neto could fix all the cars in his post, and both Neto and Matias suffer a little for it. The second case, later in the film, is when Matias wants to deliver Romerito's glasses in the favela, but since he himself can't go because of a job opportunity, Neto goes in his place, and
* OmnidisciplinaryLawyer: Averted. Matias wants to focus in criminal rights.
* RedOniBlueOni: Matias is the Blue Oni to Neto's Red Oni. After , Matias becomes a Purple Oni.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to some students.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Matias does this after .
* StarCrossedLovers: Matias and Maria.
* TranquilFury: In the sequel, he's calmed down, but is still as dangerous as ever.

-> Played by: Milhem Cortaz.
* ButtMonkey: He suffers a lot in both films.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: One of the main reasons why he's bossed around by everyone. Despite being corrupt, he isn't a monster like most of his colleagues, and outrights tells Rocha to leave Matias alone when the latter is transfered to their division. .
* Pornstache: Grows one in the sequel. It actually makes him even funnier to watch.
* TookALevelInBadass [=/=] ThrowTheDogABone: By the end of the sequel, .

-> Played by: Fábio Lago.
The BigBad of the first movie, and the favela's leader.
* ActionDad: Becoming the favela's leader wasn't easy for him, and he has a child.
* AllThereInTheManual: His real name is Cláudio Mendes de Lima. We never hear it in the movie.
* BigBad: Of the first movie.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes [=/=] EmptyEyes: Has these, probably side-effects of the drugs and paranoia.
* FauxAffablyEvil: As long as you're playing by his rules, you're fine. If you're not...
* ItsQuietTooQuiet: Says this when he's hiding. .
* MoodSwinger: He goes from calm and friendly to murderous and intimidating REALLY fast.
* MysteriousPast: Nascimento says that he doesn't know how his story starts, and suspects that Baiano's only choice in life was to become a drug dealer. We never discover it, either.
* NotInTheFace: Pleads for this when BOPE finally gets him. [[spoiler: Matias doesn't comply]].
* PetTheDog: He has a wife and child, and really cares about them.
* OhCrap: Has a massive one when he discovers that .
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Baiano.
