No reason is given to doubt his claims and it fits pretty well with Barenziah's personality - https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Tribunal:Plitinius_Mero

* AmbiguousSituation: Due to the series's love of Unreliable Narrators, it's unclear how much of either of her biographies is actually accurate. Her official biography would of course want to gloss over any scandalous or shameful parts of her life, while The Real Barenziah would want to do the opposite and likely exaggerates or even outright fabricates the more exciting and scandalous parts of her story. The truth of the matter likely rests somewhere in between the two extremes. Daggerfall and Morrowind also offer contradicting stories about Barenziah's reaction to the book; in Daggerfall, Barenziah thinks it's "cruel and defamatory", states the author was executed and the book was suppressed, and gives you a quest to steal a remaining copy from Gortwog. In Morrowind, you meet someone who claims to be its author and says that Barenziah was actually friends with him and found the book ActuallyPrettyFunny.

A particularly recalcitrant Daedric artifact of Clavicus Vile, initially created by the witch Naenra Waerr. Umbra takes the form of a bladed weapon of some sort (though it can change shape to an extent), is fully sapient, and has the power to steal the souls of those it kills. The sword is an extremely powerful weapon for those wielders it chooses, but it's usually more trouble than it's worth; mortal wielders (an orc in Morrowind, a Bosmer previously called Lenwin in Oblivion, and an Imperial who was previously Cresitus in the Skyrim Umbra creation) have their identity subsumed by the sword, while Vile himself... well, see Literature/TheElderScrolls.
------
* ArtifactOfDoom: This thing can cause trouble even for the Daedric Prince it's part of. In the novels, it actually manages to steal a portion of Vile's power for itself to take a humanoid form, and the protagonists have to help Vile destroy it and reclaim his power, so it doesn't go on a soul-stealing rampage across Tamriel.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Its form in the books is completely humanoid except for its "eyes like voids."
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Morrowind made no mention of the sword's connection to Clavicus Vile, and while the orc wielding it did call himself Umbra, it was presented less as the sword having an identity of its own and more the Orc (who wanted a warrior's death but was denied it on account of Umbra being so powerful that nobody could beat him) being so world-weary that he just didn't care.
* EvilWeapon: Umbra likes to kill things and steal their souls, and sooner or later it's going to get its way.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: The player is never subject to the 'side effects' of wielding Umbra in-game.
* LegendaryWeapon: As a Daedric Artifact.
* LossOfIdentity: Every wielder (except the player) will inevitably start losing their previous identity and essentially becoming extensions of the sword, calling themselves 'Umbra' and killing people.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: If you didn't follow Barbas's advice and gave Clavicus Vile the sword in Oblivion, then you're partially responsible for the events of the novels.
* YourSoulIsMine: One of Umbra's powers.

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: In Daggerfall and Morrowind, "Night Mother" was the title of the Dark Brotherhood's mortal leader; Daggerfall even says there have been many Night Mothers (the current Night Mother has a sprite but is DummiedOut) and heavily implies that the Brotherhood worship Mephala. Later installments make the Night Mother a spirit who may or may not be Mephala in disguise.

* GutturalGrowler: His Skyrim appearance uses the same, raspy Dunmer voice from Morrowind which hadn't been used since.

* CatchPhrase: "M'aiq knows much, tells some. M'aiq knows many things others do not." The AmbiguousSyntax seems to be deliberate. It's been noted that this could mean that either he only tells some of what he knows, or that he only tells what he knows to some people.

* GodhoodSeeker: He very much seeks to become a god. As a result of the Warp in the West, it happened. Sort of. He has now seemingly been split into two different entities, the God of Worms and the King of Worms. The King worships the God, but still seeks to become a god himself.

* DummiedOut: Morrowind had quests for both House Telvanni and the Morag Tong to assassinate Neloth which were removed in the final version of the game. Perhaps the developers already knew they wanted to bring him back? You can still kill him, of course, but as of Dragonborn, this seems to be non-canon.

* RegentForLife: Was named Potentate of the Empire in accordance with the Elder Council Charter after exhausting all other options. He was extremely successful in this role and many nobles thought he would (or even should) declare himself Emperor. He did not, and was assassinated by the Thalmor.

Rising Threat mentions that the Stormcrown Interregnum started after Ocato's death and ended after 7 years, and this end-date is placed around the time the Thalmor rose to power 4E 22. The assassination of Ocato therefore would therefore have to take place in (or very close to) 4E 15.

* TheGreatExterminator: He was a Dunmeri crusader canonized by the Tribunal Temple for cleansing Vvardenfell of Cliff Racers in atonement for his past crimes. On the Meta-level, he was originally just a fellow prisoner who asks the player their name at the start of Morrowind, but his intimidating appearance (one-eyed, bald, and shirtless) and friendliness made him popular within the fandom leading to Game Mods and Fanfics adding him back in. Bethesda took notice and mentioned him in Oblivion with a rumor that he eradicated the Cliff Racers, a much-reviled enemy type by the fanbase. Come Skyrim[='s=] Dawnguard DLC, the player character can meet his spirit in the Soul Cairn and help him recover the pages of his "opus" to tell his story.

Mannimarco does not worry on what is "Good" or "Evil". To him, there is only himself and his always increasing ambitions for power. Literally everyone and everything else are either tools or obstacles for him and his ambitions.
