Mario's younger brother.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Somewhat. In the games, Luigi normally has brown hair, here his hair color is black. [[note]]In the games, he did have black hair, but it was mainly due to the graphic limitations of the NES...[[/note]]
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: Has an L on the cap he wears.
* CowardlySidekick: To Mario.

* DeadpanSnarker: Usually towards Mario.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The responsible to Mario's foolish.
* LovableCoward: As with the [=DiC=] adaptations, he is usually this. It wasn't canon in the games until ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion''

* SiblingYinYang: With Mario. It reaches its height in "Oh, Brother!".
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: His fear of ghosts is first mentioned here.

!!Princess Toadstool
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/TraceyMoore
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: She had to be rescued in the game. Here, she actually foils Koopa's plans, sometimes on her own.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Has brown hair, much like in the game. Her blonde hair was not canon by this point just yet.
* FictionalFanRealCelebrity: She's a huge Milli Vanilli fan, much to the chagrin of her friends who she drags along to their concerts.
* GiantPoofySleeves: Her outfit consists of this.
* HeroicWillpower: She always wants to do what's right for the Mushroom Kingdom and is often level-headed when fighting the Koopas.
* InnocentBlueEyes: She has blue eyes and is a friend to virtually every Mushroomer.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: She most often fights in her dress.
* PrincessesPreferPink: Her entire outfit.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: You thought she was capable in ''Super Show''? Here, she sometimes foils Koopa's plans ''on her own''.
* TookALevelInBadass: She took on a much more active role and was less prone to kidnapping than in ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow''.
* TotallyRadical: Her outfits in "Kootie Pie Rocks", which include a Milli Vanilli T-shirt.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Proven in "Princess Toadstool for President" when everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom votes for her over King Koopa.
* WomenAreWiser: She is often the smartest of the heroes.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: The Writer's Bible states she's 17, but she certainly doesn't ''look'' that young. This could be why she's never Mario's love interest in these cartoons.

!!Toad
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/JohnStocker
MushroomMan who accompanies the Mario Bros and Princess.
----
* CuteButCacophonic: His squeaky voice.
* ADayInTheLimelight: "A Toadally Magical Adventure".

[[folder:The Koopas]]
!!The Koopas
King Koopa and the seven Koopa Kids.
----
* AgeLift:
** In the games, Ludwig (Kooky) is the oldest Koopaling. Here, Bully (Roy) is stated to be the oldest in [[AllThereInTheManual the show's source material]].
** Hip and Hop (Lemmy and Iggy) are stated to the youngest at six-years-old in the show's source material. In the original games Larry (Cheatsy) is the youngest Koopaling.
* BaldOfEvil: King Koopa, Kootie Pie, and Bully are hairless.
* BrattyHalfPint: All of the Koopa Kids, but especially Kootie Pie.
* CoolAirship: The Doomship.
* DespotismJustifiesTheMeans: They often try to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and parts of the Real World (or the entire world in one episode).
* EvilIsBurningHot: Their castle is surrounded by lava and they sometimes use lava in their plans.
* TheFamilyThatSlaysTogether: King Koopa's efforts to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom and other villainous schemes are a family operation, being their version of quality time or chores. It's
very rare for one of the Koopas to be up to something without at least one other member of the family helping in some way.
* ForTheEvulz: The reason for many of their actions.
* GalacticConquerer: A few episodes involve them trying to take over parts of or the entire Real World.
* GigglingVillain: Most commonly Hip and Hop, though Kootie Pie and Cheatsy do this as well.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: There are seven Koopa Kids.
* NonMammalianHair: Kooky, Cheatsy, Hip and Hop have this.
* RoguesGallery: The Koopa Kids rotate as the villains on every episode. All seven rarely work together.
* SpikesOfVillainy: They have them all over their shells.
* UndyingLoyalty: The Koopa Kids to Koopa.
* VillainBall: They often overload their plans with complexities and the Mario Bros. take advantage.

!!!King Bowser Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/HarveyAtkin
The BigBad and father to the Koopa Kids.
----
* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Unlike his game counterpart, where he is {{universally beloved|Leader}} amongst his minions and subjects, it's shown that nobody truly likes him. In the ElectionDayEpisode, he's on the receiving end of a LandslideElection, where he only receives ''one'' vote, which was his own. Whereas Princess Toadstool received over ''six million'' ballots in her name. [[EvenEvilHasStandards Neither his minions or ''his own children'' voted for him.]] He ''probably'' would've taken losing ''a little'' better had at the very least his own children voted for him.
* AffablyEvil: Koopa genuinely cares for his Koopa Kids to the point where he would conquer America just for Kootie Pie. He also tries doing this to the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom in "Princess Toadstool for President".
* CompositeCharacter: Emigrated from ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'', he has Wart's green skin and crown.
* DotingParent: He is shown to love his children very much, especially Kootie Pie.
* EvilOverlord: Of Dark Land.
* EvilParentsWantGoodKids: Averted, of course. He's raising his kids to be just as evil as he is, and he's proud of it. As far as he's concerned, the kids doing evil deeds is not unlike family bonding or chores. In fact, the only time he expresses disappointment in any of his kids is if they're doing anything that could be considered nice. He outright forbid Hip and Hop from going to school on the grounds it would be a positive influence on them.
-->'''King Koopa:''' You will grow up to be sneaky, two-faced, cheating illiterates, just like your dad.\\
'''Hop:''' You forgot--\\
'''Hip:''' [[FinishingEachOthersSentences Lying!]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: His voice is deeply pitched.
* ExtremeDoormat: To Kootie Pie. He often caves in to her desires.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He carries this demeanor in every episode aside from "Princess Toadstool for President".
* FullNameUltimatum: This was the only animated adaptation where King Koopa was referred to as Bowser, albeit in a few episodes.
* InsistentTerminology: On a few occasions, he is called Bowser Koopa, but he is addressed as "King Koopa" every other time. Even when he introduced ''himself'' as Bowser Koopa in "Crimes R Us", he immediately followed it up with "King Koopa to you."
* InsultBackfire: Appreciates every insult the Marios throw at him.
* PapaWolf: In "Mush-Rumors" when he's determined to keep his kids safe from the "aliens" after seeing Kootie Pie cry.
* PetTheDog: Often praises his kids, especially Kootie Pie.
* SickEpisode: He gets a cold in "Do the Koopa".
* TookALevelInKindness: He was a borderline HateSink in ''Super Show'', but this show brought out the best in him when showing affection to his kids.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: His eyes are yellow and he is constantly drawing up schemes.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: Just like the last show, Koopa looks almost nothing like his game counterpart, due to being a CompositeCharacter with Wart. What's jarring about this, though, is that the Koopalings look more like Bowser than he does, orange scales and all.

!!!Kooky Von Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Michael Stark
Ludwig Von Koopa's animated counterpart.
----
* AchievementsInIgnorance: He managed to design and build the Power Shower, a giant machine that makes it continuously rain throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. And as revealed when one of its pipes sprung a leak, somehow without any knowledge of plumbing.
* AxCrazy: A G-rated version as he acts this way around the Mario Bros.
* [[CoDragons CoDragon]]: With Cheatsy. He's the brains coming up with assorted gadgets for King Koopa to use.
* EinsteinHair: To go with his MadScientist motif.
* EvilGenius: [[AllThereInTheManual The Writer's Bible]] says he graduated from Frankenstein University.
* GadgeteerGenius: When he's the main villain of an episode, chances are it's to display one of his inventions.
* GeniusBruiser: Often does these with his inventions.
* GeniusSweetTooth: [[AllThereInTheManual According to the Writer's Bible]], Kooky eats nothing but candy and fried foods.
* LaughingMad: He has a distinctive EvilLaugh when things are going his way.
* MadScientist: He takes pride in his inventions and it shows.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Often uses this when describing his inventions.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Kooky gets offended whenever someone accuses his inventions of not working.
* TheVonTropeFamily: His full name is Kooky von Koopa. Interestingly, this trope also applies to his game counterpart, even though the characters were named independently of one another.

!!!Cheatsy Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/JamesRankin
Larry Koopa's animated counterpart.
----
* BastardUnderstudy: To the point where his double-crossing ways screwed his father out of taking over the Mushroom Kingdom in "Never Koop a Koopa".
* [[CoDragons CoDragon]]: With Kooky. He's the sneakiest of the bunch and adept at coming up with schemes.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While all of King Koopa's forces voted for Princess Toadstool rather than him, it's Cheatsy who outright says why: she's just so nice, whereas King Koopa is most definitely not.
* SmugSnake: Speaks this way. While he's certainly clever, episodes that put him in the spotlight highlight this behavior. "Never Koop a Koopa" in particular shows he thinks he's so clever in blackmailing Princess Toadstool into signing control over to him, only to be completely bamboozled by her not actually signing the scroll.
* TheStarscream: Attempted in "Never Koop a Koopa" to get control of the Mushroom Kingdom right out from under his father.

!!!Kootie Pie Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/TabithaStGermain (credited as Paulina Gillis)
Wendy O. Koopa's animated counterpart.
----
* ApplianceDefenestration: Does this often. Her birthday presents and cake in "Reptiles in the Rose Garden" get this treatment.
* BerserkButton: Two. Do ''not'' tell her what to do, and do ''not'' call her ugly.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Often throws tantrums to get her way.
* DaddysLittleVillain: Often showered with love by her father.
* DarkActionGirl: She is the most likely Koopa Kid to act with malice towards Mario and his friends, especially Princess Toadstool.
* TheDarkChick: Of the Koopa Kids.
* FictionalFanRealCelebrity: Like the princess, she's a fan of Milli Vanilli. She gives of her worship of them though after Koopa threatens to lock her in the dungeons if she brings them back to their castle, rather appropriately saying their music was too good to last.
* HairTriggerTemper: It doesn't take much for her to lose her cool.
* NoIndoorVoice: She often yells and screams if things aren't going her way.
* TheOneWhoWearsShoes: Of all the Koopas, she is the only one to wear shoes.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Has a pink shell and wears a pink bow.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She's the only female of the Koopa Kids.
* SpoiledBrat: Perhaps the Ur Example of Wendy being one in the Mario franchise.
* TantrumThrowing: Often throws things whenever she's upset.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: Wears a huge bow complete with lipstick, bracelets, high heels, eyelashes, and a small bow on her tail.

!!!Bully Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/DanHennessey
Roy Koopa's animated counterpart.
----
* BadButt: Talks with a Brooklyn accent, making him a kid-friendly gangster.
* BigBrotherBully: Bully is portrayed as the oldest of the Koopa Kids and often pushes his siblings around.
* BigShutUp To Big Mouth in his ear in "The Yoshi Shuffle" when the latter [[MotorMouth wouldn't stop talking]]:
-->'''Bully:''' ''Awwwwwwwwwwww'', '''''SHUT UP!!''''' We'll never get started.
* TheBrute: With Big Mouth.
* TheBully: [[MeaningfulName Obviously]].
* ByTheLightsOfTheirEyes: His eyes can be seen through his glasses.
* CoolShades: He just wouldn't be Roy's counterpart without them.
* JerkJock: He is the most athletic of the Koopa Kids.
* ThePrankster: Often to his siblings and sometimes to the Mushroom residents.
* RealMenWearPink: Has a pink shell and a pink head.
* TheStarscream: Tries to upstage Koopa, though not as blatantly as Cheatsy.

!!!Big Mouth Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Gordon Masten
Morton Koopa, Jr.'s animated counterpart.
----
* TheBrute: Along with Bully. Interestingly, concept art for this show depicts him as much buffer than the final product, and his portrayal in the ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' games wouldn't be too far off from those designs.
* ButtMonkey: Particularly when he turns into a MotorMouth announcer and has to be shut up by someone.
* MotorMouth: Started here but [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]] in WesternAnimation/SuperMarioWorld.
** In "Rock TV", after he goes on an extremely long-winded speech, and introducing the Tyrannosaurus Twins, Big Mouth is finally shut up by King Koopa by tossing him out out of a makeshift wrestling ring. He returns, only to do the ''same thing again'' and be tossed away by one of the Tyrannosaurus Twins.
** In "The Yoshi Shuffle", he once again rambles on about a football game before being finally shut up by Bully via a BigShutUp
* PrecisionFStrike: In the German dub of the second episode, he calls his sister [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdvst-RwZkY&t=814s a Schlampe (i.e. slut).]]
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Uses many incredulous synonyms when he rambles.
* SpeechImpediment: Often rolls his B's when he speaks.

!!!Hip and Hop Koopa
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/TaraStrong
Lemmy and Iggy Koopa's animated counterpart.
----
* BewareTheSillyOnes: According to the writer's bible, they are younger and thus less intelligent than their siblings, but they possess the most powerful wands.
* CreepyTwins: The way they [[FinishingEachOthersSentences finish each other's sentences]] and [[GigglingVillain giggle]].
* [[EnfantTerrible Enfants Terribles]]: While the rest of the Koopa Kids are in their teens, Hip and Hop are six. Doesn't make them any less competent, though.
* FinishingEachOthersSentences: Often taking more than one turn doing so.
* {{Keet}}s: Their high-pitched voices since they are so young. Being voiced by Creator/TaraStrong certainly does help.
* KidsAreCruel: They often pull pranks on the Mushroom citizens and their siblings.
* {{The Prankster}}s: They play pranks on people.
* SingleMindedTwins: They often scheme together.
* ThemeTwinNaming: Hip and Hop. Think about it.
* TokenGoodTeammate: While saying the twins are 'Good' is a bit of a stretch, they're actions throughout the series while they were bad, aren't as severe as their fathers or siblings (especially when in compared to Cheatsy's and Kootie Pie's). The best example of this was in the episode 'A Little Learning' where they actually showed interest in going to school despite their father's refusal to allow them, however when they do go to school, Oogtar and Yoshi were trying to get them removed by any means necessary despite the fact that they joined the school for innocent reasons and only attacked them/sabotaged their science project after they got them in trouble. Hip even gave off a horrified OhCrap look when the lava in his and Hop's volcano overflowed thanks to their father's interference once he found out where they's been going and they'd got expelled ''forever'' because of this.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Other Mushroom Kingdom Characters]]
!!Prince Hugo the Huge
The Prince of Giant Land who appears in the episode "Sneaky Lying Cheating Giant Ninja Koopas".
----
* GentleGiant: He's a very mild mannered fellow on top of being the new ruler of Giant Land.
* InformedAttribute: Despite being described as the "biggest, toughest, bravest prince ever", he's never shown as anything but meek and timid. He also gets defeated immediately once the koopalings barge into his castle.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: Owns a parrot.

!! Queen and Prince Mushroomkhamen
The mummified rulers of Desert Land in the episode "Mind Your Mummy Mommy, Mario".
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: The queen becomes one towards Luigi.
-->'''Queen Mushroomkhamen:''' But you look exactly like my husband. Come to me, my darling.
-->'''Luigi:''' ''*gulp*'' Uh huh huh... Excuse me, but I-I gotta find that map salesman and buy a map to someplace else.
* AntiVillain: While she is certainly ruthless and has no regards for any collateral damage she causes, at the end of the day she is just a mother trying to locate her missing son.
* TheGhost: King Mushroomkhamen is never seen anywhere, neither in the tomb nor on any illustrations. The only thing known about him is him looking just like Luigi.
* HypocriticalHumor: After the prince is returned to her, she angrily calls Mario an imposter who doesn't look anything like her son. Despite her having kidnapped him because she mistook him for him and refused to listen to his claims to the contrary. She then mistakes Luigi for her husband immediately afterwards.
* IdenticalStranger: The prince looks almost exactly like Mario, which is why the queen kidnaps him when she sees him. The king is also a literally dead-ringer for Luigi if the queen is to be believed.
* ImplacableWoman: The queen goes on a rampage throughout the desert after Hip and Hop steal her son. She only stops after mistaking Mario for him and kidnapping him. Luigi, the princess and Toad are forced to reclaim the real prince in order to save their friend.
* MamaBear: Queen Mushroomkhamen, especially when her son's sarcophagus is stolen.

!!Sultan
The ruler of Desert Land in the episode "The Beauty of Kootie".
----
* ArabOilSheikh: The main reason Cheatsy and Kootie Pie steal oil from him.

!!King Windbag
The King of Ice Land who appears in the episode "Life's Ruff".
----
* [[DefrostingIceQueen Defrosting Ice King]]: Literally, since he's the king of Ice Land. He goes from a ruthless to loving after his adventure with Luigi.
* TookALevelInKindness: Becomes nicer when Luigi teaches him how to cooperate.

!!Holly Mackerel
The Princess of Water Land who appears in the episode "The Ugly Mermaid".
----
* MermaidProblem: Tags around Mario after she saves him.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: She is a mermaid, but she is a fish from the waist up.

!!Emperor Ed
The ruler of Sky Land who appears in the episode "Up, Up, and a Koopa".
----
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Compared to the other rulers of kingdoms, there isn't much about Emperor Ed's design that points to him being the ruler of Sky Land, looking more like a military official for the Mushroom Kingdom.
* PungeonMaster: He's subtle about it, but he slips in a lot of LiteralMinded puns, such as "revolting people" who revolt against Koopa, and "falling asleep" in a bed falling from the sky.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Worlders]]
!!Madzilla
A giant robotic monster in the episode "Dadzilla".
----
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: He comes close to sending some garbage-throwing tourists into the Pacific Ocean.
* BerserkButton: Getting pelted with garbage will set him off.
* DotingParent: To Kootie Pie and Big Mouth after they bring him to life.
* ExtremeDoormat: Kootie Pie and Big Mouth control him until the Marios intervene.
* {{Notzilla}}: No, he's not Godzilla. Pay no mind.

!!Crimewave Clyde
The Real World's Public Enemy #1 in the episode "Crimes R Us".
----
* BeTheBall: Clyde dribbles a fellow prisoner like a basketball when we first see him.
* ButtMonkey: The Koopas show little respect for him when he teaches them how to commit crimes.
* TheDogBitesBack: With the help of Mario and Luigi, he gets back at the Koopas for double crossing him.
* {{Facepalm}}: He ends up doing this a couple times, due to Big Mouth's tendency to steal goods from his own siblings instead of civilians.
* HeelFaceTurn: When the Koopas became too much for Clyde, he gets their payback by foiling their attempt to rob the Mushroom Treasury.
* InstitutionalApparel: He wears his prison suit for the duration of the episode.
* LesserOfTwoEvils: His reason for willingly returning to prison? Because his LongerThanLifeSentence is better than one more day with the Koopas.
* LetMeGetThisStraight: At the castle, Clyde tries to process the off-screen explanation of who the Koopas are and "this wacky Mushroom Kingdom" that they keep attacking. He is particularly perturbed by how those aren't costumes.
-->'''Clyde:''' This is like some freaky dream.
* LongerThanLifeSentence: Was previously serving a lengthy sentence before the Koopas busted him out. When he returned, he was handed a 12,423-year prison sentence.
* [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Name To Run Away From Really Fast]]: Well, with a name like ''Crimewave'' Clyde...
* NoodleIncident: We never find out what he was in jail for so we can only assume.
* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: We don't know where the Koopas found him but the most logical guess is his prison is in the United States.

!!Norman, his wife, Bud and Missy
->''Voiced by:'' Creator/DanHennessey (Norman)
A family from Kansas who appear in the episode "Mush-Rumors"
----
* AreWeThereYet: The children frequently ask this at the beginning and end of the episode.
* BlackBeadEyes: Missy has these.
* [[{{Expy}} Expies]]: They seem to be these of [[Film/NationalLampoonsVacation the Griswolds]]
* HawaiianShirtedTourist: Norman and his wife.
* NoNameGiven: Norman's wife.
* NotInKansasAnymore: Norman says this when they arrive in the Mushroom Kingdom.
* TooDumbToLive: They are never aware that their experience in the Mushroom Kingdom was not a part of the theme park they were trying to visit.
* TotallyRadical: Bud often speaks in slang.

!!Junior
A kid Mario and Luigi wind up watching over in the episode "Misadventures in Babysitting"
----
* AssholeVictim: Becomes one when the Koopa Kids throw him in the pipe maze.
* BrattyHalfPint: Even the Mario Bros. can't control him... almost.
* TheDreaded: Junior has a bad reputation, if we take his parents' word for it.
* EnfantTerrible: His parents seem to fear him greatly.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Junior's a mischievous brat who is okay with annoying Mario and Luigi, but not actually hurting them. He sides with the Koopalings to play tricks on the Mario Bros. and gets his laughs leading them on a wild goose chase, but when the Koopalings trapped the brothers in a cave and started filling it with lava, Junior starts to have second thoughts.
* HatesBaths: Mario and Luigi force him to take one at the end of the episode.

* EvilOverlord: Of Dark Land.

->''Voiced by:'' Michael Stark

->''Voiced by:'' Creator/JamesRankin

->''Voiced by:'' Creator/DanHennessey
* TheBrute: With Big Mouth.
* TheBully: [[MeaningfulName Obviously]].

->''Voiced by:'' Gordon Masten

->''Voiced by:'' Creator/TaraStrong

* LoyalAnimalCompanion: Owns a parrot.

->''Voiced by:'' Creator/DanHennessey (Norman)
A family from Kansas who appear in the episode "Mush-Rumors"
----
* AreWeThereYet: The children frequently ask this at the beginning and end of the episode.
* BlackBeadEyes: Missy has these.
* [[{{Expy}} Expies]]: They seem to be these of [[Film/NationalLampoonsVacation the Griswolds]]
* HawaiianShirtedTourist: Norman and his wife.
* NoNameGiven: Norman's wife.
