* DependingOnTheWriter: A lot of tropes carry over between series, but some are fairly unique. Don is always TheSmartGuy. But he's sometimes contemplative and detached, laidback, and sarcastic, nerdy and clumsy, a bit tense and highstrung, or love struck with April, obsessed with data, addicted to anime or some combination of the above depending on the series and sometimes the story arc.

* GeekPhysiques: Later versions of Donatello are shown to be notably thinner than his brothers, the 2012 version being the most exaggerated in this. In the 2016 short ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Pizza Friday'', when the Turtles use a device to turn into humans, his human form is that of a skinny [[NerdGlasses bespectacled geek]], which, in Don's own words, is exactly how he sees himself. However, in his actual Turtle form, he is as [[HeroicBuild bulky and muscular as his brothers]]. ** His attitude towards his Bo staff also varies from one iteration to another. In the 2003 series, he is quite proud of the bo staff, often boasting how it is better than his brothers' weapons. In the 2012 series, he thinks it is not very good when fighting advanced alien technology while in ''Mutant Mayhem'', he is completely dismissive of his "big stick" during their first big battle against the thugs who stole April's scooter.

** One notorious example is the 2007 movie written by Kevin Munroe, who clearly had a favorite turtle. Not only are Leonardo's traits exaggerated and warped to provide an antagonist/foil for Raphael, but his personality and background are sacrificed for the movie's plot.

Not only are Leonardo's traits exaggerated and warped to provide an antagonist/foil for Raphael, but his personality and background are sacrificed for the movie's plot. * AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: His relationship with his brothers varies in different adaptations. In the Mirage comics, his best friend is Michelangelo. In the 2003 animated series, Mikey is an AnnoyingYoungerSibling who takes great pleasure in teasing Raph, who generally [[VitriolicBestBuds snarks and dope slaps him often, but when the chips are down, he sincerely admits that he loves his little brother]], but has a far more relaxed friendship with Donatello instead.
