King Farouk was once a young man enthusiastic about modernizing his country, but the days have passed, and now Farouk only wishes to live out the rest of his life as an exciting party. Farouk had totally removed himself from the political responsibilities of the Kingdom, and spends his days traveling and partying, making every moment a wild one. His habits made him a massive sinkhole for the Egyptian treasury, as he spends vast sums of money on luxuries while the economy still struggles to develop. Farouk might not be actively malicious, but he does want to ignore the stresses of politics and stay happy, and his behavior is definitely not a sustainable one.

When Viceroy Amedeo dies, and his chosen successor goes missing, the powerful and ambitious businessman Enrico Mattei assumed the de facto viceroy position with support from Rome and his mercenaries. Mattei had a rapid rise through the ranks of the National Fascist Party with his successes in running the Italian oil monopoly, and was considered the only man able to make Italian East Africa turn a profit. Now in charge of Italian East Africa, Mattei has big plans for the colony that can send its profits sky high, with some necessary sacrifices from the locals of course. The reform-minded Italian government might not approve of Mattei's actions, but Mattei's ambitions are far beyond that of a normal businessman, and he's definitely not willing to go down easily.

Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta, nicknamed the Iron Duke, was the duke of Aosta and member of the House of Savoy. Amedeo was appointed as the Viceroy and Governor-General of Italian East Africa in 1937, taking a conciliatory approach to the natives in contrast to his more brutal predecessors. During WWII, Amedeo halted British advances with a spectacular victory at the Battle of Amba Alagi, giving him the nickname Hero of Amba Alagi. Under Amedeo's rule, Italian East Africa was relatively stable compared to German Africa, but native resistance was still a massive headache. By 1962, Amedeo had grew old and sick, and had yet to name his successor. He sometimes wonders if his work might have been all in vain.

* TheresNoPlaceLikeHome: After staying in Africa for so long, Amedeo is homesick. One of the three paths he can take for his short focus tree (the other two being cracking down on the Ethiopian rebellion and pushing out one last bit of reform) is to just travel back to Italy for one last time.

After Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia, Italian East Africa was to be the crown jewel of the Italian empire. It has instead proven to be a financial burden, being underfunded and failing to turn a profit. At the start of the 1960s, it is ruled by Viceroy Amadeo di'Savoia-Aosta, whose positive reforms are amongst the few achievements in the colony's history, granting the natives a higher standard of living than German Africa. However, Italian East Africa is still a colonial occupation, and the rebellious natives pose a serious problem to the Italian rule. More than, that, the Viceroy is a very sick man, and his succession might provide an opportunity for ambitious men to try and turn around the colony's financial status...

->''Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta is a man who can be loved or hated, but not ignored. Nicknamed the Iron Duke and the Hero of Amba Alagi, Amedeo was born into a branch of the Italian royal house, eventually becoming a general of the Regia Aeronautica. In 1937 Amedeo, thanks to his noble blood, was named Viceroy of Italian East Africa, but unlike his more unfortunate brother Aimone, Amedeo immediately took active part in the government of IEA; in WWII, he personally led Italian troops in battle against the British, halting their advance into East Africa with a stunning victory at Amba Alagi.\\
As the war ended, Amedeo again dedicated himself to ruling the colony. An efficient governor critical of the fascist system (which gained him the sympathy of the new Duce, Galeazzo Ciano), Amedeo did everything in his power to protect the natives of IEA against the encroaching influence of fascist authorities and Italian companies who sought to exploit the labor of the Ethiopians, Eritreans and Somalis. It was largely thanks to Amedeo's restless work that East African natives tend to enjoy a higher standard of living than in the parts of Africa under the German thumb.\\
However, Amedeo's rule is still one borne out of colonialism, which means that many among the natives still detest him and the Italians. The paramilitaries and rebel groups hiding in the mountains and in the countryside are still a serious problem, and even those natives who aren't actively opposed to the Italian rule still suffer from unequal treatment and poverty when compared to the Italian settlers. As Amedeo grows old and a successor hasn't been named yet, sometimes the viceroy can't help but think of home, and wonder if after all, his work may have been all in vain."'''

->''King Farouk of Egypt is a man of many, many tastes. To frame him in a positive light, Farouk is determined to make life a party, that every moment should be one of fun and excitement in an effort to never to grow old or dull. To frame him negatively, he is a sinkhole for the Egyptian economy, totally removed from his political responsibilities and an embarrassment for Egypt. The King might have once been a young man, keen and enthusiastic about reforming and modernizing his country. Those days have passed however, and now Farouk wishes only to entertain himself in any way that he can.\\
Farouk spends his days eating, drinking, and smoking during his quiet moments. In his unfortunately frequent wild moments he spends his time driving through the streets of Cairo at full speed in his red sports car or perhaps engaging in some charity by firing a shower of gold coins into a crowd. If the King finds himself in a particularly active mood, he may get in his jet and fly to whatever destination he desires. His absence in Egypt is joyfully felt, as it usually leaves someone more competent in charge for a week or two.\\
On his tours of the world, Farouk puts the Egyptian treasury to ”great” use, spending it lavishly to obtain all the objects of his desires, whether that be a diamond necklace for his latest mistress, a set of coins for his ever-expanding collection, or perhaps a shot at immortality. Regardless of what he purchases, it is certainly never of any use to the people of Egypt. Farouk is not malicious or evil, but he is a man that cares little for the world outside of his immediate vicinity. Politics is a serious, drawn out, and often boring matter for the King, and as such he ignores it. He would rather be happy himself than stress about what the world wishes for him to do.''

* CivilWar: [[https://www.reddit.com/r/TNOmod/comments/b6n7if/egypt_leak/ It appears]] that Egypt can collapse into a multi-sided civil war as a result of Sultan Farouk's extremely incompetent rule. A dev leak on discord also hinted at the possibility of five different Sudans being formed.

[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tno_farouk.png]]

----

* TheHedonist: Farouk does not have any interest in ruling the country and instead desires to spend his entire lifetime in the most luxurious pleasures. Gameplay-wise, his entire focus tree consists only of him having fun around the world, not actually managing political, military and economic affairs.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/italian_east_africa.png]]

After Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia, Italian East Africa was to be the crown jewel of the Italian empire. It has instead proven to be a financial burden, failing to turn a profit. At the start of the 1960s, it is ruled by Viceroy Amadeo di'Savoia-Aosta, whose positive reforms are amongst the few achievements in the colony's history. However the Viceroy is a sick man, and his succession might provide an opportunity for ambitious men to try and turn around the colony's financial status...

----

* {{Egopolis}}: If it declares independence from Italy under Mattei, Italian East Africa becomes known as Correntia, named after [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesare_Correnti Cesare Correnti]], an Italian revolutionary of the XIX century and founder of the first Italian settlement in Somaliland.

!! ''Viceroy Amedeo''

----

* AlmostDeadGuy: He is very sick and will die within one year from the game's start.
* InternalReformist: Amedeo did a lot of positive reforms and improved the current state of Italian East Africa. He can push for one last bit of reform before his death by removing corruption and disbanding the brutal colonial blackshirts.

!!''Enrico Mattei''

----

* AllohistoricalAllusion: The leader of a European Empire's self-governing African colony unilaterally declares independence from the parent Empire when faced when the pressure of decolonization, founding a new country named after a colony founder. Enrico Mattei's Correntia mirrors Ian Smith's Rhodesia in real life, though with a much darker and violent twist to it.
* TheCoup: It is all but stated that Mattei killed Amedeo's selected successor, Enrico Cerulli, with a bomb on his plane, and took power in the aftermath.
* EvilColonialist: Mattei makes the East African colony as profitable as possible through starving the natives and working them to death.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: The real Mattei was a member of the Fascist Party during WWII, but was not active in politics, and eventually joined the anti-fascist centrist Christian Democrats party. He was more famous as a businessman than a politician, and his most famous act was reorganizing and growing a national oil company into a massive international company after WWII. The Mattei of TNO stuck with the Fascists, grew his reputation by running the government's oil monopoly, and was allowed to govern Italian East Africa due to his skills in making profit, leading to him running Italian East Africa like King Leopold to maximize profits.
* RenegadeSplinterFaction: If Italy intervenes in Italian East Africa to remove Mattei, Mattei and his mercenaries will hole up in Somalia and form the Republic of Correntia, where he declares that he will no longer answer to Italy and expand his ambitions.

* TrophyRoom: Zentralafrika has a separate game screen for Müller's trophies.
* WinYourFreedom: Dangled in front of the native population to discourage revolts, and leads many to join the SS.

----

* EgomaniacHunter: Spends as much time as possible exotic hunting and partying.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: When he does bother to personally deal with revolts, he joins his men on the field, seeing it as just another kind of thrilling hunt.
* MightyWhitey: One of the post-apocalyptic events has him taken in by a peaceful African tribe after he and his helicopter crash. After spending a week in shell shock from the trauma of the world's end, Müller emerges and decides to teach the tribe all he has learned in his years of hunting, including new ways of tracking and catching prey and new weapons with which to hunt. Eventually he learns their language and spends the rest of his life regaling the tribe with tales of his hunts from before the apocalypse. Having mistaken him for a divine being sent by a higher power, the natives deify him as a guardian spirit of the hunt after he dies and take his name for their own, calling themselves the "Muhlar Tribe".
* ReluctantRuler: Villainous example, he doesn't care at all about running a country, and even when he does he focuses on selling as many sectors of the economy off as he can so he won't have to deal with them.

* CriticalStaffingShortage: Unlike the other two Reichskommissariats, Ostafrika has to make do with no African SS brigades and is ran purely by Germans, as a consequence of Hüttig's hardliner views.
* DeadlyGas: Ostafrika can use chemical [=WMDs=] during the South African War, an act which will increase tensions between Germany and the US to uncontrollable levels.
* EliteArmy: Ostafrika has the smallest military of all African Reichskommissariats, but Hüttig's soliders are among the best in Sub-Saharan Africa.

!!''Hans Hüttig''

[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tno_huttig.jpg]]

----

* EvilColonialist: Unlike his colleagues in other parts of the African mainlands, Hüttig is very responsible to his duties as a Reichskommissar, which includes managing Ostafrika like a concentration camp and discrimination against native Africans in all spheres of life.
* NastyParty: Uncharacteristically invites Schenck and Müller to a celebration should Afrika Schild attain total victory in the South Africa War. Schenck falls for it, Müller takes refuge in Free France, and Hüttig takes control of all their lands as Reichstaat Afrika.
* SanitySlippage: While he certainly doesn't start as an angel, Hüttig grows more ruthless as he deals with domestic and foreign issues and realizes that he is the only competent man in the entire Nazi-controlled Africa. This culminates after he takes over other African [=RKs=], when he becomes an Ultranationalist.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Hüttig has nothing but contempt for his fellow African Reichskommissars because of their incompetence and complacency. Even when he agrees to cooperate with them for the common cause during the South African War, he turns on them and becomes the sole ruler of Nazi Afrika after the war.

However, his Jewish ancestry caused the SS to agitate for his removal, resulting in Hitler giving him the position to [[KickedUpstairs get him out of the way]]. The situation has left Maurice quite depressed.
* HeelFaceTurn: After all he's been through, Maurice may just turn on Germany and cede from the German sphere, siding instead with the OFN.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Maurice misses Germany terribly and is deeply miserable with his situation. Allegedly, several of his focus paths entirely revolve around him trying to exploit the chaos to secretly return home, with varying degrees of success.

* AmoralAfrikaner: Even though actual Afrikaner nationalists of the Boer Republic hate the South African government, the latter can be not much better if they launch a crackdown on the ANC.
* CivilWar: South Africa will [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption inevitably]] collapse into a civil war between the OFN-backed South African government, the Axis-backed Boer Republic, and sometimes the ANC.
* ProxyWar: Subjected to one between themselves and Afrika Schild, which serves as the opening blow of America's attempt to take the throne from Germany.
* VideoGameCrueltyPunishment: If you decide to launch a crackdown on the ANC, you will only get a third side in the future Civil War fighting against you.
* YouCannotKillAnIdea: ''Nothing'' short of nuclear war can stop the ANC's struggle for African rule. Even if the colonial government refuses negotiations and begins mass arrests of the ANC, and even if Afrika Schild utterly wins the South African War (placing the entire nation under the control of a Nazi-sympathetic Boer Republic), they will continue a guerrilla struggle indefinitely.
