The main protagonist of the ''Seraph of the End'' series. He is a member of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army as well as Shinoa Hīragi's squad in the Moon Demon Company. He, along with Mikaela Hyakuya and a few others, possesses the "seraph" gene, which is relevant to the forbidden taboo and the focal point of the story, "Seraph of the End."

[[folder:A-H]]
* AbusiveParents: His father tried to kill him by stabbing him with a knife, and his mother attempted to burn him alive by setting their apartment on fire.
* AffectionateNickname: His name is generally shorted to "Yuu", but some characters add honorifics. For example:
** Mikaela calls him "Yuu-chan", -chan is usually reserved for children, babies, young girls, lovers, close friends, etc
** Shinoa calls him "Yuu-san", -san is a gender neutral way to politely and respectfully address someone, and can be attached to names, titles, and surnames
** Yoichi calls him "Yuu-kun", -kun is an informal way to address boys and men that are younger than (or same age as) the speaker, though sometimes you'll see people addressing tomboy girls with -kun.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: It was already implied early in the series, in which Yū's parents called him demon spawn. In chapter 77, a member of the Hyakuya Sect referred to Yū as the "Devil". The various flashbacks in the later half of the manga seriously put Yuu's own humanity in question.
* AmnesiacHero: Yuu doesn't have any memories of his childhood prior the Hyakuya Orphanage aside from his parents [[OffingTheOffspring trying to kill him]]. [[spoiler:His forgotten past involves him being alive 1,000 years ago and knowing the First Progenitor and Asuramaru when the latter was human.]]
* AntiHero: He is fundamentally a good person but is also moody and anti-social. This is subverted later on after his CharacterDevelopment kicks in.
* ApocalypseMaiden: With the [[spoiler: Seraph of the End currently sealed up inside him]] he holds the power to finish destroying the world and bring about the deaths of many should he fall into the wrong hands or submit to it.
* BackFromTheDead: After he [[spoiler: overdoses his organs explode and collapses in front of his squad and Shinya. Asuramaru even comments that the reason Yuu's soul did not move on was due to the seraph keeping him from going to the afterlife. Luckily once Yuu's heart starts back up, Asuramaru repairs it and Yuu comes back.]]
* BadassBoast: To a vampire who claims humans to be "despicable" after revealing that Yuu and co.'s informant lied to them in order to protect her family:
-->'''Yuu:''' Humans are despicable? Ready to betray their own brethren just to save a family member who's been taken hostage? That's correct. Humans would do anything to save their family. They're ready to lie shamelessly, and even turn themselves into devils or demons. If that is what you mean by despicable, then tremble in fear, as this despicable human kills you, vampires!
* BerserkButton: Vampires that refer to humans as "livestock" and drink their blood like they are blood bags. Seeing his loved ones being hurt is also one.
* {{Bishonen}}: While not as pretty as Mika or Ferid, he certainly has his own level of prettiness, especially in the anime.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Both of his sclera are dark [[spoiler: after awakening as a seraph.]]
* BladeOnAStick: [[spoiler: As the Seraph of the Second Trumpet]], he is able to manifest a large spear (or blade in Manga) made of salt that could [[spoiler:turn any living beings into salt, hence his title - the King of Salt. A few slashes inflicted on Abaddon of the Fifth Trumpet using the blade is sufficient to pulverize it into salt particles.]]
* BookDumb: He completely failed all of his exams, in a complete contrast to Kimizuki. Justified in that growing up in a vampire city led him to miss out on a lot of schooling.
* BridalCarry: In Chapter 87, Yuu carried Mika like this [[spoiler: as they fled from [[DemonicPossession Guren]], Mahiru, and Noya.]]
* BrokenBird: Due to his parents' abuse and watching the Hyakuya orphans die, he refused to form bonds with other people for a long time. It takes a while for him to even open up, and allow himself to trust his squad.
* BullyHunter: Subverted. Yuu speaks up to the bullies picking on Yoichi, but it's really more that he's looking for a fight than that he's angry on Yoichi's behalf.
* CharacterDevelopment: He started this series as being anti-social and not wanting to bond with others seeing that he lost his "family" in the orphanage to the vampires. Over the course of the series, he becomes more open to his feelings and ends up valuing ThePowerOfFriendship. In addition he starts off in the series fighting the vampires simply for revenge, but after learning about the importance of teamwork and the fact that Mika is still alive in the Battle of Shinjuku, he establishes his purpose of fighting the vampires for protecting his comrades and [[FamilyOfChoice family]].
* ChasteHero: He didn't understand the romantic implications of tenderly touching Shinoa's neck like Shinoa and Mitsuba did. Also when Shinoa and Guren teasingly remind him that he's a virgin, he doesn't get embarrassed, just mildly annoyed, and he barely acknowledges it.
* ChickMagnet: Has had at least three girls develop romantic feelings for him, one of which actually confessed to him in chapter 3/episode 3.
* ChildSoldier: Is a member of the Moon Demon Company, and is 16 years old.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: After watching his family and Mika killed off by Ferid while attempting to escape from the vampires, Yu has a tendency to help out anyone in need. Even if it's a little girl who was allowed to escape to set up a trap for him and his squad by vampires. Consequently, he will often rush headlong to save people if he's able to, which then often puts his new family/squadmates in danger.
* CorruptTheCutie: Yuu agreeing to become a Namanari to hold back the seraph has caused him to start the process of becoming a demon.
* TheChosenOne: Guren mentions a prophecy about Yūichirō when he finds him escaping from the Vampires' underground city, but another eight chapters later and we still have no idea what this means. [[spoiler:He very likely was referring to Yuu possessing the [[ApocalypseMaiden Seraph of the End]] genes.]]
* CutHimselfShaving: He gets into a fight with the equally HotBlooded Kimizuki. When Yoichi asks him why his face is all bruised up Yuu responds that he walked into a telephone pole.
* DeathSeeker: In Chapter 90, [[spoiler:Asuramaru figures out that Yuu's true wish is dying because ever since he was kid, when his parents called him a devil and tried to kill him, Yuu never found a reason to live and only tried to keep going hoping he would find people who would love him. When Mika, his only family and LivingEmotionalCrutch is about to die before his eyes, Yuu is more than ready to let Asuramaru kill him and take control over his body. Unexpectedly, Asuramaru decides to force Yuu to live and turn Mika's death into his reason to not die.]]
* DeclarationOfProtection: He swears to protect his TrueCompanions, who he calls his new family, and Mika, the only one left of his original family. It's, however, somewhat deconstructed since Yuu's desperation to never lose anyone again causes him to make rash and risky decisions and sometimes he endangers the very people he wants to protect because of it.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler: A rare inversion of the trope. He gets Asuramaru to relinquish his power to him by promising to be his friend]].
* DemonOfHumanOrigin: In Chapter 41, he [[spoiler: is transformed by Asuramaru to a full demon in order to suppress the angel's power.]]
* ElementalBarrier: [[spoiler: As the Seraph of the Second Trumpet]], he can raise pillars of earth and salt to defend him.
* EmptyEyes: Flashbacks [[spoiler:of about 1000 years ago]] show a young Yuu having emotionless eyes with no shine in them.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Hinted at with Mika, Kimizuki, and Yoichi. Also, in chapter 46 Ferid flirts with Yuu and compliments his good looks and beautiful eyes.
* [[spoiler:ExpendableClone: According to Noya in chapter 85, the First Progenitor Sika Madu had created dozens of clones of Yuu and he wouldn't notice if one or two were destroyed. This was seen when, hundreds of years ago, Noya killed a kid version of Yuu for discovering his, Ashera's, and Krul's secret meeting and his surprise that there was an "adult" version of Yuu in the present day.]]
* ExpositoryPronoun: Yuu is normally a ''very'' informal speaker, to the point of being rude, but when Guren berates their squad for their tardiness, he steps out and starts apologizing completely politely and serenely (even ditching his usual [[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns "ore"]] for "jibun"), showing that Yuu can be mature and responsible when he wants to.
* FamilyOfChoice: Despite Yuu's protests, the orphans at the Hyakuya Orphanage feel this way about the group due to poor relationships with their blood family. Eventually, Yuu comes to accept this as well. [[EverybodysDeadDave And then they're all slaughtered]]. Four years later, Yuu manages to find a new family (Shinoa's Squad) though.
* FishOutOfWater: Yuu is largely unfamiliar with how most of human society works and doesn't care to learn.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler:He has actually known both Asuramaru and the First Progenitor Shikama since over a thousand years ago. Yuu has no recollection of it, though.]]
* HairTriggerTemper: Has a very short temper, the fuse is often lit when either dealing with vampires or being mentioned about his old family at the orphanage, particularly about Mika. His temper mellowed down after CharacterDevelopment, however.
* HatesBeingAlone: In Chapter 90, Yuu admits to Asuramaru that he doesn't want to be left alone and would rather die before having to bear that.
* HeroicWillpower: He can shake off a demon's attempt to control him with barely any effort. [[spoiler: His possession of the "Seraph" gene apparently helps to resist demons too.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Mika, however neither of them have shown conclusive signs of being heterosexual. Also the whole 'being on opposite sides' thing complicates it slightly. Fortunately, Mika wasn't really on the vampires' side to begin with since he hated the vampires as much as he hated the humans.[[spoiler:By chapter 41, Mika completely leaves the vampires to join Shinoa's team so he can be with Yuu.]]
* HotBlooded: So very much.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:I-S]]
* IdiotHair: To match his non-existent brain.
* IdiotHero: He's not that smart.
** For example, as we learn a fair way into the story, [[spoiler:he never realized that vampires used to be human once. He's completely shocked to learn this and even more so that everyone else knew.]]
** Justified in that he did not receive a proper education for most of his childhood and had spent most of his childhood traumatized.
* IneffectualLoner: The first arc of the manga or so is primarily about him learning to cooperate with others. [[spoiler:However, the trope comes back into effect during the battle in Nagoya, when he refuses to leave Guren who was captured by vampires, and goes back for him alone. Even when using more power than usual having consumed three enhancement pills, he's still no match for Crowley, and almost turned into a demon if not for Kimizuki saving him.]]
* InsultOfEndearment: His comrades like Kimizuki and Guren call him "Idiot Yuu" (UsefulNotes/{{Baka}} Yuu) noticeably even after they've warmed up to him.
* IWorkAlone: The first arc is basically about knocking this mentality out of him.
* InSeriesNickname: His name is shortened to just "Yuu" by most characters.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for Mika's transformation into a vampire since he left him behind to be turned by Kurl. Later on, [[spoiler:Shinoa is possessed by her inner demon Shikama, the First Progenitor, and begins to turn into a vampire because she tried to protect Yuu and he blames himself for it.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's unfriendly, abrasive and bad-tempered, but a very good person deep down. His attitude improves a lot after he makes new friends.
* KidHero: He's only 16.
* LeeroyJenkins: He is a mixture of being HotBlooded and a case of ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight. Mitsuba, having once been the same, hates him for it.
* LimpAndLivid: Does this when the seraph takes over him.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Yuu is the one thing that keeps Mika going after their fellow Hyakuya orphans were killed and Mika's unwilling transformation into a vampire.
* LonerTurnedFriend: After the trauma of watching the Hyakuya orphans he considered his family being killed, Yuu developed a lone wolf attitude and kept his distance from others for a very long time. The first arc of the manga or so is primarily about him learning to cooperate with others. He ends up accepting the Shinoa Squad as his TrueCompanions and new family.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Unlike his fellow Hyakuya orphans who has normal brown or black eyes (except for [[IcyBlueEyes Mika]]), Yuu has large, shiny green eyes despite having normal brunet hair like them. This signify both him and Mika as the "more important" characters of the orphans.
* MysteriousPast: As the manga progresses, many things hint there's a lot more to Yuu's past than it originally seemed and Yuu himself doesn't know about it. [[spoiler:The most mysterious part of it is that he was a servant of the First Progenitor Sika Madu, apparently either actually being [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld quite ancient]] or [[ExpendableClone having had dozens of clones made]].]]
* NeverBeHurtAgain: As Shinoa notes, the reason why he's so anti-social is because he's afraid of losing the people important to him again.
* NiceGuy: Especially noticeable in later chapters after his CharacterDevelopment kicks in.
* NoSocialSkills: When he first met [[spoiler:Ashera a thousand years ago]], there was many things Yuu didn't know and it seemed like he didn't interact with anyone but [[spoiler:Sika Madu]]. He also liked to play with ''living snakes'' instead of toys, something his new playmate [[spoiler:Ashera]] didn't want to join him in.
* ObliviousToLove: He doesn't seem to realize that both Shinoa and Mitsuba have feelings for him.
* OffingTheOffspring: His dad apparently tried to stab him in the past, and his mom left him in a burning building while screaming about how he's a demon and she has to kill him. Yikes.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: It is used as a sign for his character development. After the fight in Shinjuku, relieved to know that his friends are still alive and touched that they were worried about him, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Yuu]] tells his team that he's blessed to have friends like them. Their reactions say it all:
-->'''Kimizuki:''' Hey hey, are you sure you don't need more treatment?\\
'''Mitsuba:''' Please stop the nice kid appeal.\\
'''Yoichi:''' He obviously hit his head.\\
'''Shinoa:''' No no, couldn't it be that he has been a nice kid from the start?\\
'''Yuu:''' Which one of you wants to get thrown out the window?
** In Chapter 16 (Episode 13), after finding out that Mika is still alive as a vampire, Shinoa asks him if he would still say "I'll kill all vampires" again. For the first time in the series, Yuu gives a negative response to that. Even Shinoa is surprised and notes that Yuu is now more mature than before and questions whether this is because his reason to live has changed (i.e. from "kill all vampires" to "get Mika back"). This is later reinforced in [[spoiler: Chapter 39 and 43, when Yuu admits that he's thankful to Krul, ''the'' ''leader'' ''of'' ''the'' ''vampires'', for saving Mika, and is willing to ''trust'' her and ''rescue'' her after she has been imprisoned by other vampires.]]
* PastExperienceNightmare: After Yuu escaped from the vampire capitol, he frequently has [[FlashbackNightmare nightmares]] about his [[FamilyOfChoice family's]] death (with emphasis on Mika dying in Ferid's hand), causing him to relive the incident in which the orphans were slaughtered. Demons are fond of inflicting these to their masters in order to take over their bodies.
* PowerGivesYouWings: During his incomplete awakening as a seraph, he has a massive [[spoiler: black wing-like structure sprouting from his upper right shoulder]]. Later on, he sprouts [[spoiler: two irregular black wings as he is awakening as the Seraph of Second Trumpet.]]
* {{Protectorate}}: To Mika, Yuu is his one and only family member left in the world who he must protect at all costs, even if Yu himself protests against it.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: While he looks like a regular teenager, some details of his forgotten past suggest he's '''much''' older. [[spoiler:According to flashbacks, Yuu has to be over 1,000 years old at the very least.]]
** [[spoiler:Either that, or the First Progenitor Sika Madu had made [[ExpendableClone dozens of clones of Yuu]].]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: As of recent, anytime he gets possessed and or stuck in [[SuperPoweredEvilSide demon mode]], his eyes turn red along with HellishPupils.
* RedOniBlueOni: He and Mikaela are a prime example of this trope. Yuu is hotblooded, fiery, and full of determination. Mika, though, despite having some obsessive qualities, is level-headed, calm, and often a voice of reason to his friend.
* {{Revenge}}: This is Yuu's main--and initially only, as far as he's concerned--motivation in life, due to the first people who had accepted him as a family member (Mika and the Hyakuya orphans) being murdered by a vampire. However, thanks to CharacterDevelopment, he also includes protecting his new comrades and retrieving Mika from the vampires as his goals later.
* ShipTease: There's some very strong Yuu and Shinoa vibes after the battle in Shinjuku (from Shinoa's side at least) and other hints with Yuu and Mika throughout the manga, the anime, and the official art. The author has made it known in a Q&A that Yuu's "unexpected special skill" is to make others love him — outright implying Yuu's whole squad has crushes on him. However, [[ChasteHero Yuu himself]] hasn't explicitly shown any romantic interest in anyone and focuses only on killing vampires and protecting his comrades and Mika.
* SkewedPriorities: Despite the completely rational reasoning of his team and superiors, Yuu often decides to act on his own due to this.
* SoleSurvivor: Of the Hyakuya Orphanage. Needless to say, SurvivorGuilt accompanies it. Subverted when it's revealed that Mika is still alive.
* SourOutsideSadInside: His abrasive attitude and lone wolf-like persona act like a shield so that others would leave him alone, and so that he can avoid the pain of losing someone dear to him again. He eventually stops pushing people away thanks to finding new friends.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: Yuu, [[spoiler: as the titular Seraph of the End, more specifically the Second Trumpet]], has one. He gives into it in Chapter 40, as he is desperate after [[spoiler: Guren becomes possessed and Mirai transforms into the Fifth Trumpet to smite humanity. He takes the trumpet within his mind and disregards Asuramaru's warning that this will erase the remainder of his humanity.]]
* SurvivorGuilt: He spent four years burdened by the guilt of escaping Sanguinem after his fellow orphans were murdered by Ferid. He gets better after he starts making new friends and Mika turns out to still be alive.
* StormOfBlades: His Cursed Gear's ability [[spoiler:Asura Kannon.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:T-W]]
* TearsOfBlood: In Episode 11, he went berserk some time after consuming a pill that has been laced with special drugs, triggering his SuperpoweredEvilSide and cries a tear of blood.
* TermsOfEndangerment: Is referred to as Mika's "princess" and "angel" by Ferid.
* TookALevelInKindness: After dropping the IneffectualLoner shtick, he's a much friendlier person, especially after learning that Mika is still alive in the battle in Shinjuku.
* TragicBromance: The murder of his best friend Mika affects Yuu so deeply that he decides that he has no reason to continue living except to avenge his death by dedicating himself to the extermination of the entire vampire race. Subverted when it's revealed that Mika is alive after all.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: Upon seeing his squadmates and "new family" being captured and fed on by the vampires in episode 11, something awakens within him that causes him to gain enormous strength. Crowley, who earlier proved to be TheDreaded, barely manages to dodge his attacks. Unfortunately during that time, he's unable to tell friend from foe, and inadvertently attacks Shinoa as well.
* {{Tsundere}}: He's shown to be quite aggressive and was very relunctant to befriend Mika and the Shinoa squad (choosing to work alone than having teammates, and not working together at it) when he first met them, but eventually warms up to them and has shown his protective and caring side. It still doesn't stop him from being rude.
* TsurimeEyes: This contrasts his eyes to Yoichi, whose eyes are also green but of a different shade and are TaremeEyes.
* UndyingLoyalty: He and Mika are completely loyal to each other. Similarly, he is also extremely loyal to his squad teammates and Guren.
* UnwittingTestSubject: Unknowingly to him, the real purpose of the Hyakuya Orphanage was to use its children for human experiments. Yuu was a guinea pig for their experiments involving the Seraph of the End. He doesn't remember it because they erased his memory more than seven times while he was only seven years old.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Kimizuki. They frequently butt heads and argue.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: In chapter 46 Ferid comments that Yuu has "clear and beautiful eyes".
* WorthLivingFor: After finding out that Mika is still alive, Yuu says his reason for living is to save Mika. [[spoiler: In Chapter 37 (Episode 22) he admits that he's glad that he chose to keep living, even after he's lost his reason to live due to the murder of the Hyakuya orphans, because living allows him to meet Mika again. Yuu outright told this to Mika, Guren, Mahiru, and Noya in chapter 86 when Mahiru taunted Yuu. Mika [[WhenSheSmiles smiled sincerely at the words]].]]
* YouNeedToGetLaid: Guren seems to think this about his single-minded dedication to killing vampires.
-->'''Guren:''' This have anything to do with getting vengeance for your family?\\
'''Yuu:''' Of course! It's the only thing I've lived for since you brought me here!\\
'''Guren:''' We need to get you a date. Soon.

* HotBlooded: So very much.

* KidHero: He's only 16.

Soon.

** Yuu is normally a ''very'' informal speaker, to the point of being rude, but when Guren berates their squad for their tardiness, he steps out and starts apologizing completely politely and serenely (even ditching his usual [[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns "ore"]] for "jibun"), showing that Yuu can be mature and responsible when he wants to.

* {{Tsundere}}: Zigzagged between Type A and B. He's shown to be quite aggressive and was very relunctant to befriend Mika and the Shinoa squad(choosing to work alone than having teammates, and not working together at it) when he first met them, but eventually warms up to them and has shown his protective and caring side. It still doesn't stop him from being rude. He is more of the Type B side towards them, unless they annoy him and if you are someone new, do expect him to be a Type A. It later gets better once his character development kicks in.

Added DiffLines:

* UnwittingTestSubject: Unknowingly to him, the real purpose of the Hyakuya Orphanage was to use its children for human experiments. Yuu was a guinea pig for their experiments involving the Seraph of the End. He doesn't remember it because they erased his memory more than seven times while he was only seven years old.

* AmbiguouslyGay: Yuu falls between this and AmbiguouslyBi in that while he occasionally blushes around girls (in the anime at least), he acts much more interested in Mika. Doesn't help that in the official fanbook, his answer to what he likes in the opposite sex is a blunt "shut up". [[spoiler: In the PS Vita game, he is unfazed when seeing Mitsuba and Shinoa wearing only towels and casually says "What are you guys doing?". But this may be due to him knowing that Shinoa will purposely expose herself and Mitsuba to make him flustered.]]
** Also, in the fanbook he acts disinterested in Mitsuba wearing civilian clothes and when Yoichi is shown wearing some Yuu responds. "Those civilian clothes look '''seriously good''' on you, Yoichi!"

* ShipTease: There's some very strong Yuu and Shinoa vibes after the battle in Shinjuku (from Shinoa at least) and other hints with Yuu and Mika throughout the manga, the anime, and the official art.

Even if it's a little girl who was allowed to escape to set up a trap for him and his squad by vampires. Consequently he will often rush headlong to save people if he's able to, which then often puts his new family/squadmates in danger.

Crowley, who earlier proved to be TheDreaded, barely manages to dodge his attacks. Unfortunately during that time, he's unable to tell friend from foe, and inadvertently attacks Shinoa as well.
