Usagi and Mamoru initially meet when she hits Mamoru in the head with a test paper, leading to Mamoru insulting her test score and Usagi screaming at how much she hates him. This progressed in both to rather heated meetings, though it became quickly clear the characters were developing an attraction to each other. This was drawn out much longer in the anime, and each encounter even had its own theme music. In both mediums, however, Usagi and Mamoru eventually realized they were not only Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, who share a more tender and heroic relationship in combat, but also learn they were lovers in the distant past as Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. Unlike a great deal of these examples, the tension is actually resolved rather early in the series and the drama with the pair after that comes from outside forces trying to force them apart. Played with in the fifth season of the anime, where Seiya (who is on the receiving end) assumes this is what Usagi does when she's attracted to someone before realizing she's not interested in him.

Usagi sucks at sports (except for Frisbee), while Rei’s athleticism is commented upon (and is only second to Makoto in a strength test shown in opening of the S movie). Usagi has relatively few talents, and Rei has a wide range of talents (singing, organizing a school festival, composing music, modelling, skiing, fire-reading, and ESP among others). Usagi readily admits her shortcomings, while Rei pretends she is infallible. Usagi is openly affectionate, and believes in relying on friends to help you through problems, while Rei is reluctant to show affection, often tries to do everything herself, and keeps her problems to herself. While Usagi encourages Rei to cut loose from time to time, allow herself to accept help and show others affection, Rei toughens Usagi up, and teaches her to show bravery in the face of adversity, and forces her to take her responsibilities seriously.

** The manga justifies this, as Usagi was horrified by what she saw in the mask, and in a number of post transformation panels, she can be seen holding the mask as if discarding it, showing she still had the mask but preferred not to wear it. After her transformation and outfit are upgraded thoughout the first arc, it stops appearing, aside from a single use in the second arc, where she uses another new power with it to see what people have been replaced with droids.
** Episode 5 of the anime showed Usagi using a skill called "Moon Tiara Stardust" that recycled the stock animation of her normal attack, but the effect allowed her to heal children possessed by the monster of the day. This power only showed up once, and by the time she was needed to heal humans again, she used the newly-acquired Moon Stick (which unlike "Moon Tiara Stardust" did actually show up in the manga.)

Which isn't do surprising when you consider that, in most continuities, [[spoiler:Usagi ends up losing her Senshi and Mamoru to the Dark Kingdom's forces and is forced to fight alone for a while.]] Part of the reason that Usagi sheds tears for Nehellenia in the 90's anime [[spoiler:and even almost allows Nehellenia to kill her]] is because she admits she wouldn't be able to handle the idea of spending an eternity alone like Nehellenia did.
* TheHeart: She's the female centerpiece of the series and the glue that holds everyone together. Especially emphasized in the live-action series, in which a group of four loners (Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako) all become true friends through Usagi's love and affection.
