Art Nouveau is a genre, therefore a trope, not a Useful Note.

* SomethingAboutARose: In ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', apart from being Usagi's favored FlowerMotif, UsefulNotes/ArtNouveau roses in multiple hues appear during her heroic moments. A spray of red roses caps off her TransformationSequence, and while she issues her InTheNameOfTheMoon speech, various shades of them frame her hand, pattern the floor and ornament the [[WeirdMoon crescent moon]] of her backdrop.

* {{Foil}}: To Rei, in the 90s anime. While Usagi is lazy, Rei is a complete {{workaholic}}. Usagi struggles in her role as a Senshi, while Rei instantly takes to it. While Usagi initially rejects leadership, Rei covets Usagi’s position, and needs to feel control of everything. Usagi sucks at sports (except for Frisbee), while Rei’s athleticism is commented upon (and is only second to Makoto in a strength test shown in opening of the S movie). Usagi has relatively few talents, and Rei has a wide range of talents (singing, organizing a school festival, composing music, modelling, skiing, fire-reading, and ESP among others). Usagi readily admits her shortcomings, while Rei pretends she is infallible. Usagi is openly affectionate, and believes in relying on friends to help you through problems, while Rei is reluctant to show affection, often tries to do everything herself, and keeps her problems to herself. While Usagi encourages Rei to cut loose from time to time, allow herself to accept help and show others affection, Rei toughens Usagi up, and teaches her to show bravery in the face of adversity, and forces her to take her responsibilities seriously.

** To Minako in the manga. Both are blonde, bubbly love addicts that aren't academically inclined. However, while Usagi's ditziness is, to some extent, genuine, Minako is actually a genius who quickly masters whatever she tries her hand at, and has a wide range of skills and accomplishments to her name that no other teenager would be able to claim. She simply cannot be bothered with schoolwork. While Usagi initially spends her first few days as a Guardian running from her enemies, Minako faces the enemies head-on. While Usagi refuses to let go of her love and her friends, Minako isn't as fortunate and is forced to kill her love and let her perfectly good social life waste away as she keeps working as a Sailor Guardian. For this reason, while Usagi's cheer and optimism are genuine, Minako is one hell of a HurtingHero who [[StepfordSmiler puts on a brave face]] out of refusal to show weakness. While Usagi cries and whines when she has problems, Minako just gets pissed, and resolves to come out on top. Usagi was born having all the power she needed as Sailor Moon, while Minako has to grind to become the unbelievably skilled warrior that she is.

* NotSoDifferent: She and Chibi-Usa are more alike than they're willing to admit. At one point in ''Crystal'', the other characters lampshade how similar they are.
* ObliviousGuiltSlinging: Inverted. When Usagi starts spending time with Makoto she is extraordinarily complimentary of all the things Makoto is usually uncertain about, including both her strength and her femininity. So it’s more like Oblivious Confidence Building.

* OddFriendship: With Ami. They're about as opposite as they come (Usagi's carefree and extroverted, Ami's shy and studious), but Usagi is Ami's first real friend and as the first two Guardians, their friendship becomes the start of something big.

* OffscreenCrash: In the Act 1 ColdOpen of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' this marks her impact at the foot of the stairs after an extended {{pratfall}} StaircaseTumble, accompanied by a ScreenShake while her mother winces.
* OppositesAttract: With Mamoru. She's lively, ditzy and ignorant and he's cool, calm and intelligent.

* OppositesAttract: With Mamoru. She's lively, ditzy and ignorant and he's cool, calm and intelligent.

* ParasolParachute: In the first arc, Usagi uses a parasol to gently float down from a 4th floor balcony. As if that isn't bad enough, she had Tuxedo Kamen -- a young man -- hanging on to her during the descent. This is perhaps justified as the parasol was created as part of a magical disguise, so it could very well be magical itself.

* PinkGirlBlueBoy:
** Her aura and parts of her uniform and accessories are often colors pink, while Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask/Endymion is often drawn with blue highlights. The main color contrast between them is white and black, though, so it's downplayed.
** During the ModestyTowel scene in the HotSpringsEpisode, she and Shingo play it straight in their towel colors. In most of the franchise, though, green is Shingo's color of choice.
* PinkHeroine: All of Usagi's transformation sequences involve pink ribbons swirling around her. Her first, second, and fourth brooches are also heavily pink. Her standard uniform is actually equal parts [[PrimaryColorChampion red and royal blue.]], though it was often a ''pink'' shade of red. Her eternal form also has big pink puffy sleeves. And in the first manga artbook, Usagi is associated with the color pink. Some of her early designs also show her with pink hair. This was {{subverted}} as the series went on, as Usagi came to be associated more with white/silver while her future daughter becomes heavily associated with the color pink.
* PinkMeansFeminine: She usually wears red, white, blue, and yellow in her fuku, however her "aura" color appears to be pink, as whenever she's using an attack, pink is usually her main color. Her bow is also pink in [[Theatre/SeraMyu the musicals]] and [[Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon the live-action drama]].
* PlotSensitiveSnoopingSkills: A particularly JustForFun/{{egregious}} case. A number of one-shot characters fail to hide their innermost secrets from her, but she never notices her little brother's crush on Ami in the fourth season BeachEpisode.

* PocketProtector: Is forced to stab a BrainwashedAndCrazy Mamoru in the chest, and she's so traumatized that she attempts suicide... except he lived because the sword was stopped by the crystallized forms of the Shitennou, and she did too because the blade hit the pocket watch Mamoru given her.

* PowersViaPossession: While trapped in Nemesis without her powers, she gets them back by channeling her future self Neo Queen Serenity, who still sleeps at the Crystal Palace.
* ThePratfall: In the Act 1 ColdOpen of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' Usagi's status as TheKlutz is cemented when she manages to take a StaircaseTumble by losing her footing and falling on her rear down the last eight steps to her house's first floor, finishing with an OffScreenCrash.
* PrecisionFStrike: Not even Sailor Moon herself is safe from Viz's ObligatorySwearing policy, getting in a "You bastard!" shouted at one of the bad guys in episode 74.
* PrettyInMink: In a SickEpisode where Usagi is having a fever dream, she's on a date with Mamoru, and she's wearing a PimpedOutDress that has a neckline of white fur.
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: Went from a crybaby, wimpy schoolgirl to an able fighter in hand-to-hand combat, able to perform acrobatic feats (the least of which is leaping across rooftops), and wields world-destroying/saving power in the form of her [[FantasticNuke Silver Crystal]] and has successfully prevented TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt multiple times.

* PrincessesPreferPink: It's generally assumed that while Usagi's image is associated with silver and white, all of her powers in the [[Anime/SailorMoon first anime]] result in huge pink blasts of light (if they aren't moon-shaped or rainbows), including her transformation sequences up until Eternal -- she's pink on the inside.

* RedOniBlueOni: In the manga, live-action and ''Crystal'', she is the red oni, while her main foils (Mamoru, Rei, Shingo, etc) are all blue. Not so much in the first anime where most of her foils undergo and AdaptationPersonalityChange and become more emotional.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Usagi [[IJustWantToBeNormal just wanted to be normal]], only agreed to get powers in order to save her friend Naru, and even got out of having them once when she died at the end of the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]]'s first series. She never got out of it in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]], though she killed herself after being forced to kill her lover; they were ''both'' reborn and she had to fight again immediately afterward.

* SayMyName: "MAMO-CHAAAAAAAN!" The characters do this a lot.

* ShipTease: She and Mamoru are an OfficialCouple across all versions, but she's got some HoYay with Rei. For that matter, she gets a bit of it with several of the Sailor Guardians. Quite a few enemies get feelings for her, and in the final anime season, she and Seiya get lots of tease in Mamoru's absence.
* ShutUpHannibal: Delivers one of these to a few villains like Nephrite and Demande.
* ShyFingerTwiddling: Does this a lot.

* SmarterThanYouLook: She's not the brightest kid around even when she applies herself, but she's not quite as dumb as people make her out to be. At least she passed her school entrance exams.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: She has attracted dark admirers for her beauty as Sailor Moon in the present or as Neo Queen Serenity in the future.

* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: In the live action, Tuxedo Mask catches her falling down the stairs and asks if she's an idiot. She automatically retorts with "who are you calling an idiot" before realizing their dialogue mirrors the one between her and Mamoru after the latter saved her from being run over by a car. Cue dramatic unmasking.[[note]]One-sided, as Mamoru already knew her identity by that point.[[/note]]
* SonicStunner: She can turn her shouts into sonic wave blasts that can shatter glass and stun her enemies.
* SoProudOfYou: At the end of the Black Moon Clan arc, Neo Queen Serenity does this towards her daughter, reassuring her of her love and place within the Royal Family.
* StaircaseTumble: PlayedForLaughs as Usagi, frantic at being LateForSchool, loses her footing halfway down and performs an extended [[ThePratfall Pratfall]] the rest of the way, finishing with an OffscreenCrash.
* StalkerWithACrush: Downplayed, but in some versions, the first time that Usagi meets Rei, she follows her home on the bus because of how infatuated she is with her looks.

* SupernaturallyYoungParent: Chibiusa looks no older than 8 or 10 after she starts becoming Sailor Chibimoon (she is actually [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld is over 900]]), while Usagi who is 14. Chibiusa is actually Usagi and Mamoru's KidFromTheFuture.

* TemporalSickness: When Usagi and the Outer Sailors were standing in a elevator-like time portal in the manga, Usagi suddenly starts banging on the glass and complaining that she was going to puke. She never actually does though. And of course, Haruka has to go and make fun of her.
-->Haruka:"Not even Super Sailor Moon can battle the forces of gravity."

* ThisIsUnforgivable: Often used in her InTheNameOfTheMoonSpeech.

* TooDumbToLive: Because she is such a klutz and a crybaby, the other Guardians and the two cats started pegging her as this (or at least that's what Creator/DiC's English version would like us to think...). However, this applies more to the first [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]] than to the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] (especially the crybaby part).

* VitriolicBestBuds: With Rei in the anime. Exemplified best in Sailor Stars. Despite all their bickering throughout the series, it's Rei who Usagi rushes to when the the Inner Guardians are about to die.

to:

* VitriolicBestBuds: ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She will do anything to save her boyfriend.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
**
With Rei in the anime. Exemplified best in Sailor Stars. Despite all their bickering throughout the series, it's Rei who Usagi rushes to when the the Inner Guardians are about to die.die.
** She and Luna form a strong bond over the course of the series, but Luna is frequently frustrated with Usagi and both deliver AmusingInjuries to each other.
** Haruka is harsh on Usagi and annoyed with her tactics and idealism, while Usagi things Haruka is too rough and narrow-minded. Yet Haruka cares about Usagi and will do anything to protect her, and Usagi respects and looks up to Haruka and appreciates everything she does.
** Usagi and Chibi-Usa often fight over any little thing and complain about each other's faults, nut the two do love each other very much. They both are genuinely sad when ever Chibiusa has to return home, Usagi will do anything to protect her, and Chibiusa draws a picture of Usagi secretly naming it "the person I admire most".
** Her relationship with Shingo, just like most siblings. They bicker and annoy each other on a regular, but when things get serious, they worry about each other and will do whatever they can for one another. The original anime plays this trope up. Their arguments appear more in that series, but so does their close and caring relationship.

Added DiffLines:

* WhatTheHellHero:
** Haruka and Michiru call Usagi out for her naivete, being so soft on ApocalypseMaiden Hotaru, and not really having a plan. Usagi does it right back for not looking for options beyond killing Hotaru, so BothSidesHaveAPoint.
** In ''Sailor Moon R'', she does this to Chibi-Usa, coming close to beating the girl after the latter foolishly stole Usagi's brooch in an attempt to take her Silver Crystal back to the future, leading to the other Sailors to get captured by Rubeus when they tried to interfere and save her. Mamoru has to hold Usagi back from doing so.

Added DiffLines:

* WillNotBeAVictim: After her everything the Black Moon Clan put her through, she has had enough and fights back.
* WorkingThroughTheCold: In an episode where all the Guardians except Venus have the flu, she still fights, though she's almost too weak to defeat the monster.
* WorldsStrongestMan: As Eternal Sailor Moon, she manages to claim this title from Sailor Galaxia after beating her.
* YouAreNotAlone: In times of despair, she is typically on the receiving end of this to give her the strength to defeat the final villain, but she dishes it out just as much. Before her, none of the other Guardians had friends, so she is the reason they are not alone.
* YoureInsane: To Demande regarding his plan to rewrite history.

'''Usagi:''' ''[yelling offscreen]'' I'm ''not'' alright! ''[enters rubbing rear]'' Ouuuuuch.
* ImplausibleHairColor: Her parents have black hair and blue hair respectively, but she is a blonde. At least her brother's hair color matches hers in the manga and ''Crystal''.

* InsultBackfire: One MonsterOfTheWeek uses people's insecurities against them, leading Sailor Mercury to despair and almost making her attack her friends. Sailor Moon, though? Not only does she completely dismiss all the insults the monster hurls at her[[note]]because she's so used to it[[/note]], no, when the monster says that she's weird, she grins happily and takes it as a praise.

Added DiffLines:

* KamehameHadoken: Whenever she uses the Silver Crystal.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Not too bright but makes up for it with her good heart.

Added DiffLines:

* LargeHam: The series is like a WorldOfHam, but Usagi is one of the hammiest. In the anime this while she was practicing her part for a play, Shingo lampshaded that she was being a real ham actress.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Usagi being the Moon Princess. Immediately after said reveal, the spoiler went public on covers and merchandise. Really, the anime's second closing song "Moon Princess" spoils this one ''before'' the reveal.

Added DiffLines:

* LikeBrotherAndSister: Though Usagi initially has a crush on Motoki, he sees her as a younger sister. She accepts this after she starts dating Mamoru.

Added DiffLines:

* LivingEmotionalCrutch; Usagi seems to be this for ''all the Inner Guardians'', at least at first, who have tragic backstories and/or were treated as outcasts. With time they recover, but they still remain rather attached to Usagi.
* LongDistanceRelationship: During the ''Sailor Stars'' arc, Mamoru went to America to study, leaving Usagi behind for a large part of the series. (And then it turns out that [[spoiler: Mamoru actually was killed by having his Star Seed ''stolen at the airport''.]])
* LookBehindYou: She and Chibiusa try this on a Snow Dancer chasing them during the second movie. The Snow Dancer falls for it completely, and looks genuinely puzzled when she turns around and they aren't there anymore.
* LoonWithAHeartOfGold: A bit of a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} and very caring to everyone.

Added DiffLines:

* LoveBubbles: A common sight with her, especially when Tuxedo Mask is around. In Act 1 of ''Crystal'', flat, prismatic bubbles appear in frame with Usagi along with a {{Gaussian|Girl}} filter as she and Mamoru share a sudden, lengthy HeldGaze on first meeting. After awkwardly breaking eye contact, she mentally notes her heart is still pounding.

Added DiffLines:

* LoveMakesYouEvil: In ''Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon'', Sailor Moon loves Tuxedo Mask so much that she's willing to destroy the world for him. [[spoiler: And does. Twice.]]
* LuminescentBlush
** She, Tuxedo Mask and the Inner Guardians find out that the child they've been looking after is Moon and Mask's KidFromTheFuture. The parents-to-be blush so deeply that [[HighPressureEmotion steam appears over their heads]].
** In Act 2 of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', Usagi blushes when she makes a mental note that her new acquaintance Ami is cute, and Ami, having been friendless, blushes whenever Usagi's affectionate, like when she hugs Ami effusively, tells her she's cuter when she smiles, and when she agrees to be friends.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Lunarians}}: Reincarnated princess of a kingdom of Lunarians that was wiped out centuries ago.

Added DiffLines:

* MasterOfDelusion
** Naru blatantly tells Usagi to be careful before she goes off to fight the BigBad in R. Usagi tries laughing it off but it's obvious to the viewer that Naru already knows.
** In Sailor Moon S, Usagi goes for a drive with Haruka and Michiru, has the ''exact same conversation'' with them as she had with Uranus and Neptune a few episodes earlier, and even mentally superimposes Uranus's face over Haruka's, realising that they look exactly the same. She forgets all about this a few minutes later and it's a big shock when she eventually discovers that Haruka and Michiru are Uranus and Neptune.

Added DiffLines:

* MementoMacGuffin
** Pictured on the main page: The star-shaped music box is a reminder of her link with Endymion and their past life together. At the end of the first season, [[spoiler: she takes it out and shows it to him (he was brainwashed and crazy at the time) as a last resort, pleading for him to remember who he was and how they loved each other long ago. It works, but the locket disappears and is never seen again afterwards.]]
** The manga has a small pocket watch (which is what was turned into the star locket) that Usagi got from Mamoru. During the revelation of [[ForegoneConclusion Usagi being the moon princess]], it plays backwards as Usagi regains her memories as Princess Serenity.

Added DiffLines:

* MindControlEyes:
** It happens to her while under the influence of "Wise Man."
** Although she isn't technically possessed, Usagi gets these when she turns into [[spoiler: Princess Serenity]] for the first time.
** Similar to the above, [[spoiler:Sailor Moon]] gets these at the climax of S, when [[spoiler:she forcibly manifests her heart crystal and transforms into Super Sailor Moon without the aid of the Grail]].
* MistakenForGay: In one episode, Michiru tells Rei that she and Usagi are close, just like her and her girlfriend Haruka.
* MoonRabbit: An obvious nod to this legend. Her real name, Tsukino Usagi, is a phonetic pun on the term "Rabbit of the Moon" if split into words ("''tsuki no usagi''") though the kanji differs slightly. Her hair is intended to look like a rabbit's ears.

Added DiffLines:

* MundaneUtility: Usagi tends to use the disguise pen for mundane things, such as turning into an adult to sneak into a bar or a camera woman to sneak onto a boat, much to Luna's horror. Strangely, each time she uses it for something mundane it ends up being someplace she needs to get into to stop the baddies, though it's possible she's used it off screen without this happening.
* MyFutureSelfAndMe: In the manga and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', despite believing it impossible for [[NeverTheSelvesShallMeet past and future selves to meet]], Sailor Moon and Neo Queen Serenity do manage to briefly meet one another and thank each other for everything.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: The jewels in her buns let her sense when others are in danger. She senses Naru calling for help in the first act. And in the penultimate episode of the first season, she is able to sense when [[spoiler:Sailor Mercury]] dies; she bears witness to the other deaths but this one she wasn't present for.

* CrushBlush: In ''Crystal'', when Usagi accidentally sits next to Mamoru on the bus, she attempts to hide that she's doing this...by holding Luna up in front of her face.

* DanceOfRomance: In ''Crystal'' Act 4, Tuxedo Mask asks Usagi to dance, and the two of them share a romantic moment laden with sparkling shoujo bubbles.

* DeclarationOfProtection: Gives one to Crystal Tokyo, despite Wiseman having everything to win by that point.
* DespairEventHorizon: Comes close to a few of these. Fortunately, her friends and teammates are there to pull her through.

* DominoMask: Originally wore a mask similar to Sailor V's in the manga, but discarded it so often that it eventually disappeared from her character design entirely.

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Her first scene is her sleeping in late, nearly forgetting her lunch, and running to school while still half asleep. That's it. That's all you need to know about Usagi.

* EyelidPullTaunt: Her and Rei's relationship is largely giving each other red-eye.

* TheFace: As the heart and the leader of the team, she's the one who holds the group together. Most of the others just don't have her way with people when she first meets them or are too committed to their duties to fill the role.
* {{Fangirl}}: In ''Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon'', she and the others are fangirls of Aino Minako, an IdolSinger who also turns out to be Sailor Venus.

* FemininityFailure: In one late episode of the first season, Usagi joins a club designed to help create "princesses", thinking that she could be more lady-like after the revelation that she was Princess Serenity. She flops with flying colors, the only thing she was good at was Frisbee throwing.
* FirstGirlAfterAll: According to the R'' movie, ''Promise of the Rose'', [[ReincarnationRomance Usagi and Mamoru]] count as this in their lives on Earth because [[spoiler: Usagi ''actually'' met Mamoru when they were both little kids. The day Ikuko gave birth to Usagi's little brother Shingo, a no-older-than-5 Usagi brought [[SomethingAboutARose red roses]] as a gift and later snuck around nearby hospital rooms, with one of the roses in her hand. She then entered the one where a no-older-than-ten Mamoru was hospitalized, still grieving over the deaths of his parents and his TraumaInducedAmnesia, and after a short talk she gave him the rose to make him feel better...]]

* GamerChick: She loves video games and spends entirely too much time at the Crown Arcade. In her case, however, she's a spectacularly ''bad'' player.
* GaussianGirl:
** Appears this way in all versions where Mamoru first dreams of her as the princess.
** When Usagi and Mamoru first really look at each other, it suddenly becomes a mutual HeldGaze in soft focus, with a few LoveBubbles appearing as they stare at each other. The filter dissipates as Usagi realizes the moment's awkwardness.
* GeniusDitz: Even when she acts like a ditz, she does have one field of brilliance: friendships and people's feelings.

* GirlyRun: In Act 1 of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', Sailor Moon makes her public debut while yelling at MonsterOfTheDay Morga assertively, but then enters the scene with arms upraised and unsteady gait, along with the SloMo effect usually reserved for an UnflinchingWalk. It underscores that, while Usagi's heart's in the right place, she's ''really'' green at the MagicalGirlWarrior thing. While her running in-series improves to match her growing up, the opening to Season 3 falls back to this trope.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: (Manga only) Her mask lets her see disguised enemies and those who are in danger. She doesn't like it though and takes it off until it stops appearing.

* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: (Manga only) Her mask lets her see disguised enemies and those who are in danger. She doesn't like it though and takes it off until it stops appearing.

Added DiffLines:

* GreenRocks: Her crystal seems to gain whatever properties are necessary for a particular arc's plot. It can defeat evil beings, except for when it only seals them away or heals them! It can grant its user's dying wish, except when using it doesn't cause death! It's useful for saving cities of the future, initiating {{Transformation Sequence}}s, and also apparently could serve as a great power battery for {{Big Bad}}s! It even plays music!
* HairColorSpoiler: The princess is revealed to be Usagi...after several earlier episodes had shown Tuxedo Mask having dreams about a woman in a princess dress and the exact same {{odango hair}}style as Usagi.

Added DiffLines:

* HarpOfFemininity: Had one as Princess Sailor Moon. Her Princess Sword could transform into the Princess Harp, which she used for healing magic.

Added DiffLines:

* HealingHands: Can heal others with her Moon Healing Escalation, though she needs her crystal or wand to do it.

Added DiffLines:

* HeldGaze: After sniping at each other without really meeting eyes, Usagi pulls her test paper away from her face to further chastise Mamoru for mocking her low score, only to gasp as they both stare open mouthed, the scene turns mutually {{Gaussian|Girl}} and LoveBubbles appear. Usagi breaks the gaze and makes an awkward retreat, acutely aware that she finds the nameless boy attractive.
* HenshinHero: One of the best-known MagicalGirl-based examples of the trope.

Added DiffLines:

* HeroesPreferSwords:
** In the anime, Sailor Moon wields one when fighting Galaxia as the last hero standing.
** In the [[Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon live action series]] [[spoiler:Princess Sailor Moon]] has a sword.
* HeroicBSOD:
** Usagi hits this pretty hard in the first season. The first time is when she's slammed with a rapid fire set of information - that annoying Mamoru's her love interest Tuxedo Kamen, she's the long-lost Moon Princess Princess Serenity, they got the Silver Crystal and... oh, yeah, the Dark Kingdom has Mamoru, who, last she saw, was ''dying''. She starts crying that she doesn't want to do this anymore and just be a normal girl, even willing to just go ahead and fork over the Crystal before a desperate Rei has to [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan slap some sense into her]]. She does it again in the finale as the girls drop like flies, ultimately leading to her wishing that she could be a normal girl after finishing off Beryl.
** Usagi has another one at the final arc of Stars. She watches her best friends and guardians die in one fell swoop, Rei dying in her arms. While she's still reeling from that, she looks up and sees that her love, Mamoru, had his Star Seed removed a long time ago, and she had no idea that he'd been attacked and dead all season long. To say that she's having a rough day is putting it mildly. And that's not even the end of her bad day.

Added DiffLines:

* HeroWithAUniqueName: The only Sailor Guardian who is not named after a planet in the Solar System and instead named after Earth's moon.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Naru, at least until the Sailor Guardians start showing up.

Added DiffLines:

* HoldingHands: In Usagi's second recurring dream of a romance between a prince and princess, her view of the dream princess changes to a first-person perspective, in which she sees herself running while holding tight to the sword-wielding prince.
* HolyHandGrenade: A lot of her attacks are a blast of pure light of love and justice, yet she's usually the one who vaporizes the MonsterOfTheWeek.
* HonorBeforeReason: She fights for what she feels is right, namely love and justice, even if she doesn't always think things through.
* HowDoIShotWeb: During her first fight, she has no idea how to use her powers until Luna tells her what to do.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She can be a ClingyJealousGirl towards Mamoru and hates when other women get close to him, but she is not always faithful herself from the way she stares at other boys. Apparently, only one of them needs to be 100% devoted. This is mostly in the first anime.

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: She was probably initially meant to be average-looking schoolgirl, but [[http://static.diary.ru/userdir/3/2/0/1/3201809/81424407.jpg here goes]].

* AgonyOfTheFeet:
** On the very first episode of the anime, Usagi's brother Shingo comes home to find her banging on the front door after getting kicked out of the house again. He then proceeds to make fun of her on his way inside, and when she tries to "Sailor V Kick" him in retaliation, he slams the door shut, causing her to kick the door full force and make a ''very'' funny face.
** While attending at a traditional tea ceremony, Chibiusa and Usagi's feet fall asleep from assuming the ''wariza'' sitting posture for longer than they can bear. This elicits a few snickers from Usagi when she sees Chibiusa struggling to maintain her composure. Cue Chibiusa silently punching Usagi's feet from behind, sparking a war of back-and-forth foot-punching.
** In the [=SuperS=] film, Usagi stomps the foot of an evil villainess who wanted to combat her with "a dance fight".

* AnimalMotifs: Rabbit. Many east Asian cultures see the Man in the Moon [[MoonRabbit as a rabbit]], so the animal has a long association with lunar motifs. Oddly enough, she hates carrots, but this may be TruthInTelevision since carrots are actually bad for rabbits in real life (and the fact that carrots are a StockYuck for Japanese children might also have something to do with it). Probably started because her name also means Rabbit. Also her family names makes it a pun on Rabbit of the Moon, the Japanese equivalent of the man in the moon. See MeaningfulName for a break down.

to:

* AnimalMotifs: AmbiguouslyBi: She has the whole "destined lovers" thing with Mamoru, but is also clearly attracted to other women. She followed Rei home the first time she saw her because she was entranced with her beauty, [[WingdingEyes hearts in her eyes]] the entire time, and goes along with Haruka's flirting even after learning she's a woman.
* AmusingInjuries: Much of the humor comes from this, with [[ButtMonkey Usagi]] and [[NotSoAboveItAll Rei]] being the most frequent victims.
** There's a slapstick routine involving Usagi trying to "Sailor V kick" [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling Shingo]] for irritating her just after she got booted from the house for failing a test. Usagi misses and kicks the closed door, then clutches her [[AgonyOfTheFeet foot in pain]] and melodramatically wails to be let in.
** In Act 1 of both the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' Usagi first meets her cat {{familiar}} via stepping on the cat's ''spine'', tripping and {{faceplant}}ing on the sidewalk. Luna returns the favor by maniacally scratching Usagi's face, (the marks from which [[BeautyIsNeverTarnished disappear]] after a single scene) then leaping away none the worse for wear.
** In episode 104 of the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]], Usagi's feet fall asleep during a tea ceremony and Chibi-usa punches her in the foot to deliberately trigger SeizaSquirm. One word: ouch.
* AnimalMotifs:
**
Rabbit. Many east Asian cultures see the Man in the Moon [[MoonRabbit as a rabbit]], so the animal has a long association with lunar motifs. See MeaningfulName for a break down.

* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther:
** In the original anime, Usagi and Rei are usually at ends with each other, but the series makes it clear that Rei is the closest friend to Usagi among the Guardians.
** Despite their constant bickering and fights with one another it's made clear, multiple times, that Usagi and Chibi-Usa do indeed love one another with Usagi going full MamaBear if anyone even thinks about hurting her. Their tearful goodbye at the end of ''R'' really makes it stand out especially this line in the Viz English dub:
-->'''Chibi-Usa''': I love you, Mommy.
** Usagi and Shingo have this going on. Like most siblings, their SiblingRivalry and familial love go hand in hand. When Shingo's having a problem with his best friend, Usagi's the only one there for him, and when she goes missing, he makes every effort to find her and regrets how he acted earlier.
* BabiesEverAfter: Well, Chibi-Usa ''is'' the KidFromTheFuture; and in the last pages of the manga, which show Usagi and Mamoru's wedding, Usagi is '''very''' heavily implied to be pregnant with Chibi-Usa.

* BeamOWar: Often fights the BigBad this way. One battle that stands out was when she fought the Snow Queen in her second movie.

* BenevolentMageRuler: As Neo Queen Serenity.

* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Just after Eudial kills Michiru and aims her gun at Haruka, Usagi appears in a doorway, and lunges forward, hitting Eudial and causing her to practically try to hold on to the edge of the dark cathedral pit, until she jumps onto a bell that goes down the pit. ** In episode 8 of ''Crystal'', Moon, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter show up in time to aid Venus against Kunzite. Then in episode 18, she arrives at Calaveras' public channelling in time to rescue Sailor Venus from her.
* TheBigDamnKiss:
** ''Crystal'' Act 8 features Usagi finally kissing Mamoru after he saves her from an untimely death. This kiss is featured in the manga, but it's taken UpToEleven in the anime. There's even [[LoveBubbles sparkles]].
** Not a romantic one, but Season 3 of ''Crystal'' gives us one between [[spoiler: Haruka and Usagi]].

Added DiffLines:

* BigNo: She does this a lot, but here are a few major examples:
** Delivers one in the last episodes of the first and last seasons when all her friends [[spoiler:seemingly die]].
** In the first episode of the second season, ''R'', Usagi screams this as Luna restores her memories so that she can become Sailor Moon again to fight the new threat of the Makai Tree Aliens.
** In one episode of Sailor Moon S, we see the light go out in [[spoiler:Sailor Uranus']] eyes after a long and labored speech about needing Sailor Moon to complete their mission. Usagi gives a particularly heart-wrenching scream.

Added DiffLines:

* BirdsOfAFeather: She and Makoto bond well after they become friends and have quite a bit in common, like a mutual love for food, some boy-crazy cloudcuckoolanderish tendencies… They even seem to be okay with the fact that they both have a crush on Motoki.

Added DiffLines:

* BlankWhiteEyes: In ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', she exhibits these briefly while suffering AgonyOfTheFeet, after her "Sailor V Kick" meant for her AnnoyingYoungerSibling Shingo instead hits their shutting front door.
* BlatantLies: Does this in Act 3 of ''Crystal''. When identified by Rei, she denies it.

Added DiffLines:

* BodyToJewel: In the manga and ''Crystal'', the Silver Crystal forms from Usagi's tears.

Added DiffLines:

* BrokenBird:
** While she's normally an AllLovingHero, she approaches this in the [[Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon live-action show]], the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal''. She ''kinda'' comes close in the ''Stars'' season of the anime as well, being a [[ThePollyanna mild Pollyanna]] who acquires shades of StepfordSmiler because she doesn't want to make her friends worry over her. Ultimately, things get worse, [[spoiler: but after a huge HeroicBSOD, she ultimately overcomes this.]]
** Even more so, in the live-action series [[spoiler:Moon has a SuperpoweredEvilSide named [[DarkMagicalGirl Princess Sailor Moon]], who was this. Cold, ruthless and full of grief over the destruction of the Silver Millennium and the death of Endymion, PSM was determined to get her beloved Prince back, ''and destroy the world if she had to do so'']].
* BroughtDownToNormal: Happens a lot in different versions of the franchise with her devices getting stolen, damaged or destroyed, though she always gets better. In ''Crystal'' at the end of the Dark Kingdom arc, her brooch is shattered while defeating Metalia, making her unable to be Sailor Moon until she gets a new one.

"''I am the sailor suited Pretty Guardian who fights for love and for justice -- I am Sailor Moon! In the name of the moon, I'll punish you!''"

The main protagonist of the series. Usagi is an [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent ordinary junior high school student]] who discovers one day, thanks to the appearance of her MentorMascot Luna, that she is a warrior destined to protect Earth from the evils that threaten to destroy it. It is later revealed that she is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity from centuries past, and that she will one day become Neo-Queen Serenity and rule the world. Though initially frightened by this responsibility, Usagi grows over the course of the series from a spoiled crybaby unsure of herself and her abilities into a brave fighter for love and justice (though she never quite gives up her goofy ways).
----
* ACupAngst: Has this reaction to Green Esmeraude calling her and the other Sailor Guardians "skinny, pimply schoolgirls with flat chests and flat butts".
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the manga, Usagi[=/=]Sailor Moon's hair is most often pale blonde and changes to silver-white as her past incarnation Princess Serenity and future self Neo-Queen Serenity. In TheNineties [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]], it's always golden blonde. Crystal zig-zags on this, depicting her with blonde hair as Princess Serenity, but MysticalWhiteHair in the future as Neo-Queen Serenity.
* {{Adorkable}}: A ditzy, clumsy NiceGirl.
* AffectionateNickname: Earns several of these throughout the series, such as "Usako" (little bunny) from Mamoru and "Koneko-chan" (My (little) kitten) from Haruka.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: TheNineties anime plays with this dynamic, with Mamoru given a motorcycle and an AgeLift from high-schooler to college student while dating a middle-schooler. He's a snarky jerk to Usagi for a long time, ''but'' they don't progress beyond BelligerentSexualTension until he shapes up.
* AllLovingHeroine: Known as "The Messiah of Purity".
** Butterflies as Super Sailor Moon.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: In the anime, when she gets distracted very easily from important tasks.
* AttractiveBentGender: In Chapter 5 of the manga, Usagi uses her disguise pen to turn into a groom. And she/he is ''[[http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6vg14aXMa1r1bz0wo1_1280.jpg hot.]]''
* AuthorAvatar: [[WordOfGod Naoko Takeuchi]] has stated that Usagi was modeled after herself.
* BadassAdorable: The {{adorkable}} leader of the Sailor Guardians.
* TheBeautifulElite: During the Silver Millenium and Crystal Tokyo.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Mamoru in the first season. Usagi and Mamoru initially meet when she hits Mamoru in the head with a test paper, leading to Mamoru insulting her test score and Usagi screaming at how much she hates him. This progressed in both to rather heated meetings, though it became quickly clear the characters were developing an attraction to each other. This was drawn out much longer in the anime, and each encounter even had its own theme music. In both mediums, however, Usagi and Mamoru eventually realized they were not only Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, who share a more tender and heroic relationship in combat, but also learn they were lovers in the distant past as Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. Unlike a great deal of these examples, the tension is actually resolved rather early in the series and the drama with the pair after that comes from outside forces trying to force them apart. Played with in the fifth season of the anime, where Seiya (who is on the receiving end) assumes this is what Usagi does when she's attracted to someone before realizing she's not interested in him.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Rei's Veronica for Mamoru's Archie, only in the first anime. [[spoiler:She wins.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
** In the manga, where Usagi will really punish you in the name of the moon for your evil deeds - with lethal magical force. Even in the anime, where she'll usually offer villains a chance to repent and be healed, she's more than willing to use deadly force if the situation calls for it.
** The episode "Sailor Venus' Past! Minako's Tragic Love" shows this as well - when Usagi learns that Minako had her heart broken when her friend and her crush fell in love with each other, she's so angry that when the friend (who has become the MonsterOfTheWeek) attacks them, she has absolutely ''no'' intention to heal her, and is ''perfectly willing'' to just kill her. It takes Minako ''pleading'' with her to cause her to relent, and even then she's reluctant to do so. The message is clear - [[BerserkButton you do]] ''[[BerserkButton not]]'' [[BerserkButton upset her friends]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Especially in the first anime. Usagi Tsukino is a ditzy schoolgirl who cries, whines and eats a lot. But she's also a powerful Magical Girl who will fight with teeth, nails and magic to protect those she cares for.
Sadly, this still doesn't save Haruka from committing suicide.]]
* BigEater: Usagi, this is also one of her known traits in the series.
* BigGood: She's TheLeader of the group as well as TheHero, and ultimately other Senshi recognize her as such as well.
* BigSisterBully: At her worst, she can be one to both Chibi-Usa and Shingo (even though she loves them dearly).
* ABirthdayNotABreak: On Usagi's 15th birthday, the glass slippers Mamoru got her had a Daimon Egg implanted in it, Kaolinite steals Usagi's Cosmic Heart Compact, Tuxedo Mask gets frozen in crystal by Kaolinite, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and Minako briefly puts on a (questionably convincing) Sailor Moon cosplay in an attempt to fool their enemies]].
* BiTheWay: In the third manga arc her relationship with Mamoru is briefly called into question when she shows feelings toward Haruka/Uranus, even after finding out that Haruka is a girl. Also, in both the manga and the anime, she explicitly wants to follow the newly met Rei around town because she finds her so beautiful (complete with cartoon hearts for eyes). StupidSexyFlanders is also a likely explanation. However, this is confirmed in the manga by [[spoiler:Sailor Cosmos, who was revealed to be Sailor Moon's future self in some form, and who indeed [[ScrewYourself stole a kiss from her]].]]
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The blonde to Umino's brunette and Naru's redhead.
* BookDumb: She struggles with bad grades, falls AsleepInClass and is LateForSchool as a RunningGag. She's also the main {{Action Hero}}ine of the franchise.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Milder version.
* BreakTheCutie: She gets broken multiple times, but especially in Sailor Stars.
* BrownNote: In the very first episode (both 90's anime & Crystal) her crying causes people to fall unconscious and deals property damage.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: The obvious pun aside, she can be pretty much like this. Even after she becomes Neo-Queen Serenity, in the far future, she's still the same ditzy Usagi-chan we know and love, which Mamoru (Minako in the anime) remarks upon after reading a badly-written letter from her that came back to the past with Chibi-Usa (tail end of the Black Moon arc in the manga, about one-third into the ''S'' season in the anime):
--> She really ''is'' future Usako/Usagi-chan...
* ButtMonkey: Some tendency toward this, namely in the anime.
* ByThePowerOfGreyskull: "Moon prism power, make up!", "Moon crystal power, make up!", "Moon cosmic power, make up!", "Crisis, make up!", "Moon crisis, make up!", "Moon eternal, make up!(Anime)/Silver Moon crystal power, make up!(Manga)"
* ClassicalAntiHero: Moreso in the Nineties anime; she is lazy, clumsy, coward, crybaby, ditzy, and BookDumb; but she is essentially a girl of good heart and IncorruptiblePurePureness.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Toward Mamoru, often. More as a sign of childishness than serious clinginess, and she develops past it in the manga.
* ClothesMakeTheLegend: Her sailor suit in all of her forms of Sailor Moon is quite iconic.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: The kid's thought patterns can sometimes be very, VERY weird. Specially in the first anime.
* ColorCodedSecretIdentity: Usagi's first school uniform looks very similar to the outfit she wears as Sailor Moon. They both have a white shirt/bodysuit with a blue sailor collar, a red bow on the chest, and a blue pleated skirt.
* ComicBooksAreReal: Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus are the only Sailor Guardians who are explicitly shown having a franchise. [[CrowningMomentOfFunny In one particularly silly occasion, a disguised Sailor Venus saved Usagi's secret identity as Sailor Moon by passing her as a crybaby fan who owned a fake Cosmic Heart Compact]].
* CowardlyLion: One of the best examples of Usagi's CharacterDevelopment in the series is watching how she handles the dangerous situations around her. While she might still be afraid of the monsters she fights ultimately Usagi becomes strong enough to fight for her friends and the earth when push comes to shove. Usagi even {{lampshades}} this in ''R'' [[spoiler:right before she goes off to face Rubeus]] as she notes that the old her would have probably wailed and cried about not wanting to do something so dangerous.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: If you give her a reason to stop complaining and fight you, she ''will''. Especially in the manga where she TookALevelInBadass.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Very much so, since she is prone to tripping. In the manga and ''Crystal'', she first meets her cat {{familiar}} Luna by tripping over her and {{faceplant}}ing while running LateForSchool.
* TheCutie: Easily the most innocent and happy-go-lucky Senshi. She's unfailingly optimistic and forgiving to anyone and everyone.
* DaddysGirl: Kenji-papa is quite protective of her.
* DeathIsCheap: One of Sailor Moon's powers is explicitly resurrection, so expect main characters to die at least once per storyline. This is more prevalent in the manga than in the anime; in the latter, Sailor Moon cannot really control this power, so the Guardians tend to die a lot less often.
* {{Determinator}}: Grows into an off-and-on version of this. When she's dug in, she ''will not give up'', but it often takes a significant amount of flakiness, cowardice and complaining before she gets in the game.
* TheDitz: Usagi's ditzy personality is tied together with the rest of her character.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Her official profile states that her least favorite food is carrots, which is rather ironic considering that [[MeaningfulName her name means "rabbit"]] and she's [[AnimalMotifs closely associated with them]]. Could be TruthInTelevision as carrots are not very good for rabbits, though this might also indicate her childishness since carrots are a StockYuck for Japanese children.
* DreadfulMusician: In one episode of the anime when she tries (and fails) to play the violin.
* DrivenToSuicide: In the manga, her past self committed suicide after Endymion was killed. This is carried over into ''Crystal'' and, [[spoiler:once dragged to the Dark Kingdom, is forced to fight a possessed Mamoru, cuts him down and then turns the blade onto herself]]. Don't worry, she gets better.
* DudeMagnet: Mamoru besides, also several other fall in love with her.
* DumbBlonde: She's BookDumb and can be a {{Cloudcuckoolander}}. Yeah, she probably fits.
* EdibleAmmunition: In the final season she once used a Pizza for her "Moon Tiara Action" attack due to the fact that her final outfit lacked a Tiara.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Especially in the manga. Haruka even manages to kiss her in it.
* ExpressiveHair: Infamously known as "Meatball Head" ("Bun Head" if you're watching the Viz subs).
* {{Expy}}: Of Minako/Sailor Venus, who Takeuchi originally created for a one-shot that would later become ''Manga/CodenameSailorV''. In the anime, this led to the {{Flanderization}} of Sailor Venus to distinguish their personalities.
* FearOfThunder: One episode of ''Anime/SailorMoon R'' reveals this, and it negatively impacts her harshly. Usagi's daughter Chibi-Usa also has a fear of thunder too.
* FeatherMotif:
** Eternal Sailor Moon, her attacks of Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss and Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss which invoke purification with a blast of white sparkly feathers.
** Her Moon Crystal Power transformation in the R season also invokes this when she sprouts angel wings during the transformation.
* FisherQueen: As Neo-Queen Serenity.
* TheFool: Rei usually picks on her for this.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Foolish to Shingo's Responsible, though she of course still ends up rescuing him a few times in the anime.
* ForgottenPhlebotinum:
** In the first act[=/=]episode, Sailor Moon's {{odango}} HairDecorations blink, beep and act as [[SuperSenses super hearing]] devices projecting the sound of her friend Naru's cries for help.
** Sailor Moon can also use her domino mask as a SpiderSense to see that Naru is in trouble. Despite how obviously useful this is, neither ability appears again.
** The manga justifies this, as Usagi was horrified by what she saw in the mask, and in a number of post transformation panels, she can be seen holding the mask as if discarding it, showing she still had the mask but preferred not to wear it. After her transformation and outfit are upgraded thoughout the first arc, it stops appearing, aside from a single use in the second arc, where she uses another new power with it to see what people have been replaced with droids.
** Episode 5 of the anime showed Usagi using a skill called "Moon Tiara Stardust" that recycled the stock animation of her normal attack, but the effect allowed her to heal children possessed by the monster of the day. This power only showed up once, and by the time she was needed to heal humans again, she used the newly-acquired Moon Stick (which unlike "Moon Tiara Stardust" did actually show up in the manga.)
* ForGreatJustice: "I am the Pretty Guardian who fights for love ''and for justice!''"
* FourGirlEnsemble: Part of one along with Naru, Yumiko and Kuri before the other Sailors show up, Usagi being the sweet-naive one.
* GenkiGirl: Often goes crazy in a variety of situations.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Winds up on the receiving end of this ''3 times'' in the anime, always following an emotional outburst. First one is from [[VitriolicBestBuds Rei]] for complaining that she wanted to give up being a Senshi after seeing Mamoru wounded and captured, second one from [[BewareTheNiceOnes Ami]] for offering up the Silver Crystal so that the rest of the Senshi wouldn’t have to sacrifice their lives, and the third one from [[FakeDefector Haruka]] for being in denial that Haruka and Michiru were supposedly turning against them.
* GiantWaistRibbon: In her Super Sailor fuku, Eternal Sailor fuku, Princess Serenity and Neo-Queen Serenity form.
* GirlishPigtails: Very ''long'' girlish pigtails.
* GoldAndWhiteAreDivine: She wears mostly (as Sailor Moon) or completely in white (as Serenity). In the Silver Millennium, her mother was worshipped as a goddess, and in modern times she ''is'' a PhysicalGoddess.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: Manga only her mask lets her see disguised enemies and those who are in danger. She doesn't like it though and takes it off until it stops appearing.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She's one of the kindest, sweetest and most compassionate people around, but try to harm her friends and her love and you're in for a world of pain. Even more so in the manga, where she is less forgiving of her enemies when she feels they have crossed a line.
* HairDecorations: Her red jewel odango covers, as well as the white hair barrettes (which she gained later in the anime, but always had in the manga and live-action).
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: In the anime. She stays quite naïve and innocent throughout the series, and as a princess, she's pretty much PurityPersonified.
* HatesBeingAlone: Usagi appears to have an inate fear of being alone and losing everyone she ever cares about. Which isn't do surprising when you consider that, in most continuities, [[spoiler:Usagi ends up losing her Senshi and Mamoru to the Dark Kingdom's forces and is forced to fight alone for a while.]] Part of the reason that Usagi sheds tears for Nehellenia in the 90's anime [[spoiler:and even almost allows Nehellenia to kill her]] is because she admits she wouldn't be able to handle the idea of spending an eternity alone like Nehellenia did.
* TheHeart: She's the female centerpiece of the series and the glue that holds everyone together. Especially emphasized in the live-action series, in which a group of four loners (Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako) all become true friends through Usagi's love and affection.
* HeartBeatDown: Many of her attacks involve love and hearts; one attack even consists of blasting enemies in the face with a gigantic glass heart. This trait would pass down to Chibi-Usa.
* HeartLight: Her final form consists of her having wings and a Glowing lotus symbol on her chest.
* HereditaryHairstyle:
** Queen Serenity, her mother in her past incarnation, has Usagi's exact hairstyle.
** Her daughter has a very similar hairstyle too.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Highlighted in the third season of the anime, when Haruka and Michiru begin hurling this at Usagi.
* HeroicWillpower: When the chips are really down, she can show this - until then, she's a bit limp. An example is her fight against Rubeus in the '90s anime, where she stands up under super-enhanced gravity using nothing but determination.
* TheHeroine: The one and only Sailor Moon.
* IdiotHero: A rare female example, being depicted as BookDumb and a bit of a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} at times, but especially in the early series since she matures and becomes a true hero later on. She isn't quite so bad in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] though, the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]] tended to [[CharacterExaggeration exaggerate]] many characters.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Doesn't want to be Sailor Moon if she can help it, at first. As the series progresses, she begins to take more pride in her role as a Guardian. The reasons do change as the series progresses. At first, she just doesn't want to have to put herself in danger (her crybaby persona). As the series progresses, though, her resentment comes because of what the responsibility of being Sailor Moon has done to her and those around her (sort of like a MagicalGirl version of SpiderMan).
%%* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Usagi is Type A. Also that Usagi/Super Sailor Moon is a MessianicArchetype, though that may not count.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Insanely good at winning those, in the anime.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Manages to resist [[TheCorruption getting turned evil]] and maintains her cheery personality despite having a bigger TraumaCongaLine than most magical girls from {{Deconstruction}} animes.
* InformedAbility: Many character bios says her favorite subject is Home Economics, in spite of how awful she was and how much she seemed to hate it in episode 16.
* InformedFlaw: In the anime she claims she's chubby and flat-chested, and bothered about this. She looks exactly like every other female character in terms of body model. Takeuchi herself wrote in her notes to the anime artists that Usagi should look slightly chubbier than the other Sailors, but this design choice was mostly ignored.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Her eyes represent her good personality traits, like kindness and loyalty.
* InvisibleToNormals: Nobody notices that Usagi looks ''exactly'' like Sailor Moon. Could be justified in that in the manga, very few pedestrians have seen both Usagi ''and'' Sailor Moon, and the ones who have, like Naru, were usually out cold in one way or another. The live-action gets around this by making the girls' distinct hairstyles only part of their guardian uniforms. When not transformed they all have straight dark brown / black hair like normal Japanese girls.
* InTheNameOfTheMoon: TropeNamer. "I am the Pretty Guardian who fights for love and for justice! I am Sailor Moon! And now, [[InTheNameOfTheMoon in the name of the moon]], I will punish you!"
* {{Joshikousei}}: Usagi and all of the other Sailor Scouts are the TropeCodifier.
* KneelBeforeFrodo: After the reveal that Usagi is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity this happens a lot around her Guardians the most prominent moment being the end of the S season after Sailor Moon manages to defeat Uranus and Neptune with the two bowing towards their Princess and apologising for questioning her judgement.
* LadyAndKnight: With Mamoru and in her past life with Prince Endymion.
* LateForSchool: She is never on time for school. In fact, being late for school is one of Usagi's trademarks.
** It even becomes a plot point in the first arc of the manga, when Mamoru got kidnapped by the Dark Kingdom and Usagi awakens as Princess Serenity, she starts to feel less like herself. The fact that she goes to school early is treated as proof that she is acting out of character.
* LazyBum: She'd rather play video games and eat than study for tests. She even lampshades this when she's bewitched by [[MonsterOfTheWeek Ramua]] in the 9th episode of Season 1.
-->'''Usagi''': I have a lot of things to accomplish today. First off, I have to get home. Then, eat a pork bun. After that, finish playing my video game, take a bath, and then --- [[MotorMouth OHNO, LOOKWHATTIMEITISALREADY]]!
* LethalChef: Downplayed. What she cooks either looks bad but tastes good, or looks good but TastesLikeFeet.
%%* LightIsGood
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Light feminine to Rei's dark feminine.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: It's pointed out that while Usagi's father initially doesn't like Mamoru very much the two of them are strikingly similar.
* LineOfSightName: In Act 1 of the manga and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' newly-transformed Usagi stammers on introducing herself until her cat Luna {{Invoke|dTrope}}s this by meowing at the moon to prompt her.
* LoserProtagonist: Especially in the anime. When she is not being the MagicalGirl who saves everyone, Usagi is a [[BookDumb poor student]] (it's a wonder she made it to high school by the time the Dead Moon Circus arc begins), [[CuteClumsyGirl clumsy]] and a crybaby.
* LovableCoward: Especially in the first season, where she is constantly dodging and getting scared easily by the monsters' attacks.
* LoveFreak: Comes from her gaining power from ThePowerOfLove.
* {{Lunacy}}: One of her powers.
* MagicalGirl: One of the most famous and internationally well-known examples.
* MagicalGirlWarrior: Usagi/Sailor Moon is the TropeCodifier.
%%* MagneticHero
* MakeMeWannaShout: A less used secondary power, Sailor Moon can cry to the point where it becomes ultrasonic waves, [[GlassShatteringSound shattering glass]], [[SonicStunner stunning enemies]] and rendering weaker ones unconscious. Since her {{odango}} barrettes glow when she does this, its ambiguous whether the power is hers or a function of her HairDecorations.
* MamaBear: Woe betide whoever tries to harm her KidFromTheFuture. And her true love. And her friends. ''Especially'' in the case of Manga Usagi, who's a lot less forgiving than her anime counterpart.
* MartyrWithoutACause: She always offers her life or the Silver Crystal to try solving problems.
* MeaningfulName: Tsukino Usagi -> tsuki no usagi -> "rabbit of the moon" -> MoonRabbit
** Her English name "Serena" comes from "Serenity", the name of both her true mother and her own past and future self. It is also a reference to ''Selene,'' the Greek goddess of the moon and lover of the prince Endymion.
* MessianicArchetype: Sailor Moon is the one who can and will save the world.
* MotorMouth: Usagi talks a lot and very quickly. Her mouth tends to get her into a lot of trouble.
%%* {{Mukokuseki}}
* NaughtyIsGood: Start of the manga and anime in general.
* NiceGirl: One of the friendliest, most compassionate heroes. Even ''[[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Rei]]'' says she's this.
* NoHeroToHisValet: Sailor Moon is looked up to and relied on by many people around the world, especially Chibi-Usa before she finds out who Sailor Moon really is. That being said, the Guardians often make her the butt of their jokes, and often criticize Usagi for being lazy, naïve and ditzy.
* NotAMorningPerson: She ''does'' wake up. Just not in time and not so easily.
* OcularGushers: They don't call her "Crybaby Usagi" for nothing, especially in the title of the first episode, and if you call her "odango-atama" (roughly translates to "dumpling/bun head."), which she later embraces as a term of endearment, though only when it comes out of Mamoru's mouth.
* OdangoHair: Her hairstyle, which earns her the nickname "dumpling-head" ("meatball-head" in the Canadian dub, "bun-head" in the Kodansha manga translation and the VIZ dub). Usagi's buns-combined-with-GirlishPigtails look has become extremely iconic, and it's made her one of the most recognizable characters in anime.
* OfficialCouple: With Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask. They are the main canon romantic pairing of the series and the story generally centers on them.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: A high school student who just happens to be a reincarnated princess ''and'' a Sailor Guardian.
* OppositesAttract: With Mamoru. She's lively, ditzy and ignorant and he's cool, calm and intelligent.
%%* TheParagon
* PhysicalGod: In the manga, since to recap, she can undo the mass destruction Metalia wrecked at the end of the first arc, can revive the dead, and destroy entire planets.
* PimpedOutDress: Her Moon princess dress, the disguise wedding dress in one episode, and another disguise dress to get into a party that even came with a ParasolOfPrettiness.
* PluckyGirl: Usagi/Sailor Moon could be the TropeCodifier. She is incredibly optimistic, hopeful and determined.
* ThePollyanna: To a degree, in the anime.
* PowerGivesYouWings: Usagi's strongest, and final, forms as Eternal Sailor Moon, Neo Queen Serenity, [[spoiler:and her bared self that she uses in the final fight against Chaos]] all share one thing in common: the inclusion of wings.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: In the manga, her hair grows ''[[RapunzelHair even more]]'' after she first transforms into Princess Serenity.
* PowerStrainBlackout: She usually faints or at least collapses and loses her Super form after using her Rainbow Moon Heartache attack in the S series, although that restriction on her Super form doesn't apply during [=SuperS=], probably because she's using a power source other than the Holy Grail in that series. She also has this problem in the first few episodes of Stars, when she first tries to become Eternal Sailor Moon, and like with [=SuperS=], the problem disappears once that becomes her default form when the Animamates start appearing.
* PrimaryColorChampion: Sailor Moon's uniform consists of red (or pink-red), white and blue.
* PrincessClassic: In her past life as Serenity, she was the epitome of this trope. Beautiful, Graceful, Poised, Gentle and Kind-Hearted.
* PromotionToParent: Very weird variation, since the child she's taking care of is her own KidFromTheFuture.
* PropheticNames: "Tsukino Usagi" is a Japanese homophone for "rabbit of the moon" (the Japanese equivalent of the Man in the Moon).
* ProtagonistPowerUpPrivileges: Sailor Moon is the first to receive new [[SpecialAttack Special Attacks]] and [[SuperMode Super Modes]]. In the anime, she is also the only one to reach the Eternal Form.
* PsychosomaticSuperpowerOutage: At one point, she loses the ability to use her Moon Tiara Action spell; it's because she subconsciously doesn't want to be Sailor Moon anymore.
%%* PuppyDogEyes
* RapunzelHair: Down to her knees at least, even in her human guise. Especially long in the manga and in ''Crystal'', where after she first transforms into Princess Serenity her hair grows down to the floor almost overnight. The other Guardians have to give her an emergency haircut because there's just so much of it. Luna says this transformation is an effect of her body remembering her past life.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: In the manga, when the group finally meets Neo-Queen Serenity, she looks as though she may be 18–20 years old, it really does sink in until you find out that Chibi-Usa is 900 years old.
* ReincarnationRomance: She and Mamoru are destined soul mates who have fallen in love for many lifetimes.
-->'''Usagi to Mamoru:''' ''Even if we're reborn again and again, I know that I'll meet you. And I know for certain that we'll fall in love...all over again.''
* RequisiteRoyalRegalia: Sailor Moon's first attack is throwing her tiara to target and eliminate the enemy. In Sailor Stars, after she becomes Eternal Sailor Moon and loses her tiara, she throws a pizza instead.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The Energetic Girl to Mamoru's Savvy Guy, only in the anime.
* ScrewYourself: In the manga, though more of a "kiss yourself" in this case. [[spoiler:Sailor Cosmos, the future Sailor Moon, kisses the modern-era Sailor Moon.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Rei/Yuuichirou, Haruka/Michiru, Chibi-Usa/Helios, Motoki/Reika, Ami/Urawa ''and'' Naru/[[spoiler:Umino]] fangirl.
* SickeninglySweethearts: In the opening phases of ''R'', she gets ''extremely'' cuddly around Mamoru. Mamoru at first allows it but tries to remain the adult in the relationship, and later [[spoiler:breaks up with her for plot reasons]].
* SkewedPriorities: Just putting it mildly.
* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: The most frequent victim of this. Over the course of the anime, she's accidentally kicked a closed door, had her face scratched by Luna, had SeizaSquirm invoked on her, took countless volleyballs to the face, one of which knocked her tooth out
* SoLastSeason: Averted with her Moon Tiara, which she keeps using in later seasons even after getting more powerful wands for her FinishingMove.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask.
* StepfordSmiler: While she generally is a genuinely cheerful girl, she becomes a StepfordSmiler in ''Stars'', [[spoiler:to not let the others know that Mamoru hasn't contacted her after he left abroad]]. Even worse in the manga, because [[spoiler:Galaxia takes Mamoru's Star Seed ''right in front of her eyes'']] and she spends a good deal of the time blocking the event out of her mind.
* StockShoujoHeroine: The TropeCodifier, especially amongst MagicalGirl works. She's a 14-year old girl with long blonde hair in an OdangoHair style and wears a SailorFuku even when she becomes a high schooler. She starts out as a NaiveEverygirl and a bit of a BookDumb GenkiGirl. Usagi notoriously is a BigEater, especially of sweets, and has troubles with her weight. Usagi is big on ThePowerOfFriendship. Usagi's eventual boyfriend Mamoru has blue (or black) colour scheme, is OneHeadTaller than her, and is also older than her (only by a bit in the manga but in the 90s anime he's 19).
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Queen Serenity, her mother in her past life, looks like a silver-haired, OlderAndWiser Usagi.
* SuperGullible: In the first season finale, the DD girls create an illusion of a captured Tuxedo Mask, causing Usagi to run toward it. After the trap is exposed, they create the same illusion again... and Usagi does the same thing.
--> '''Sailor Mars:''' Yeah, right. [[WhoWouldBeStupidEnough Do you really think she's]] ''(Sees Sailor Moon running toward the illusion)'' ''stupid enough to fall for it ''AGAIN?''
--> '''Sailor Moon:''' But what if it really is him this time?
* SuperMode: Twice in the anime, both times they become permanent: Super Sailor Moon is one in S before becoming the Standard in SuperS. Eternal Sailor Moon acts as one during the Nehellenia arc of Sailor Stars before becoming the standard for the rest of the series.
* SuperSenses: Sailor Moon's {{odango}} HairDecorations can amplify her [[SuperSenses hearing]] which once caused her to pick up the sound of her friend Naru's cries for help.
* SweetTooth: Especially in the anime. Usagi loves to pig out on cakes.
* SympathyForTheDevil: More so in the 90's anime, wherein Usagi is a lot more unwilling to kill her opponents then the manga, which show a number of times where Usagi has genuinely cried for enemies that she has fought. The biggest examples in the 90's anime would be when Nephrite dies saving Naru's life, after [[spoiler:Demande protects Usagi at the cost of his own life]] and after hearing Nehellenia's DarkAndTroubledPast the last of which makes Usagi so upset [[spoiler:she's willing to allow Nehellenia the chance to kill her if it will make her feel better.]]
* TakeAThirdOption: In the anime, she ''always'' uses ThePowerOfLove and ThePowerOfFriendship as an alternative. In the manga, not so much.
* TechnicalPacifist: In the anime, she refuses to fight to kill when her enemy is an actual person. In the last season, [[spoiler:she refuses to fight both Nehelenia early on, and later refuses to fight Galaxia/Chaos even after being handed the Sword of Sealing by the Light of Hope. The craziest thing? Both times, ''it works''.]] Though she did end up killing a few more-or-less human enemies through the 90s anime. It was unintentional in a few cases, but not all of them.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: In terms of the approach they take to being a Senshi, Usagi is the Performer to Minako's Technician. Usagi initially slacked off on her training and shirked her Senshi duties when emotionally distressed. She refuses to let go of anyone she cares about, regardless of what that could possibly mean for the world. However, her compassion, idealism and determination to protect her loved ones endears her to the people around her and helps her achieve feats of unbelievable power. While Minako doesn't lack passion of improvisational ability, she's had to sacrifice the people she loved and allow her old friends to abandon her. However, she trains her ass off, personally trains the other Inner Senshi, and her sheer badassery is the result.
* TenderTears: Since Usagi is a cry baby most of the time her tearful jigs tend to be PlayedForLaughs. However, whenever something happens that is genuinely sad or moving, Usagi will cry these types of tears. It helps show how [[AllLovingHero big hearted she really is]] especially if the tears that fall are for [[SympathyForTheDevil villains.]]
* TerribleArtist: Much to her chagrin.
* ThemeNaming: Tsukino (Usagi) = Moon. "Tsukino Usagi" is a homophone for "Rabbit of the Moon" in Japanese. (While the kanji of her name literally translates into "moon field rabbit," ''no'' is also a particle that works much like the English "of.") The "rabbit" refers to a Japanese folktale which states that a rabbit lives on the moon pounding mochi.)
* ThisLoserIsYou: She's gentle, compassionate, selfless and friendly. She's also clumsy, lazy, childish and spoiled. And her friends and love interest, much as they love her, aren't shy about [[LampshadeHanging lampshading the trope]] frequently. Of course, with her being an AuthorAvatar, Naoko Takeuchi might actually be saying "This loser is ''me''."
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Starts the series as the Tomboy to Naru's Girly Girl, despite not being ''that'' boyish.
* TookALevelInBadass: Several, actually, both in the anime and in the manga.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the Black Moon arc of the manga and ''Crystal'', particularly toward Mamoru and Chibi-usa. She gets better by the end thanks to CharacterDevelopment.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Sweets. Especially cakes and ice cream.
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler:In the manga, she's had her love interest turned evil and had to kill him in the first arc, and in the last one, had to watch him and the rest of her teammates get killed by Sailor Galaxia. ''Then'' after that have to destroy the bracelet puppeted bodies Galaxia stuffed said teammates starseeds in.]] In the anime, [[spoiler:said love interest was BrainwashedAndCrazy and she only got to him after her friends were killed, and then HE died and so did she in the end. In the last one she believed said love interest was too busy overseas when he was actually dead, saw several of her teammates die at the hands of Galaxia, learned about the boyfriend's death, and was very traumatised by the cruel gambit that two teammates pulled to try take down Galaxia (including the deaths of her remaining 'mates), only for them to fail and die too.]] Galaxia did not pull any punches in her attempt to break her ''in any continuity'', yikes.
* {{Tsundere}}: A [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] Type B. She's a really sweet and friendly girl, but when she has to deal with Mamoru she reveals a short-tempered side, especially before she started dating him.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Rei in the anime. Exemplified best in Sailor Stars. Despite all their bickering throughout the series, it's Rei who Usagi rushes to when the the Inner Guardians are about to die.
* VocalEvolution: Creator/KotonoMitsuishi's RoleReprisal as Usagi in ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'' sees her use a high-pitched younger voice that recalls her role as ''Anime/SuitePrettyCure'''s Hummy.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: The Wacky Parent to Chibiusa's Serious Child, though Chibiusa is technically Usagi's future daughter.
* WideEyedIdealist: Usagi is very naïve and idealistic by nature, so much that she seems to be a dreamer with her head in the clouds.
