In the end, Negi's ideals drive him to befriend Fate instead of beating him, as he convinces Fate they should work together to save the Magic World in a more peaceful way than the one Fate's faction is attempting.

Once it's revealed the Magic World is fated to collapse, the Lifemaker's motives for ordering a ritual to erase it and trap its inhabitants in a LotusEaterMachine could be interpreted as non-malicious. However, the Lifemaker is only treated as a standard FinalBoss for TheHero to beat when they very briefly appear both in the past and present. The only occasion in which the narrative acted like the Lifemaker had some semblance of a personality was in Fate's flashback, but that's never elaborated.
