* GlassCannon: The Risen variant's armor skill, Dragon Conversion, makes the red Switch Skill scroll set all of the user's elemental resistances to 0, and converts them into an elemental attack buff proportional to the amount sacrificed. Using the blue scroll will instead provide a resistance buff that can be further increased with constant attacking, but it's primarily used to further increase the damage of the red scroll.

* {{Foil}}: While likely unintentional in its fourth generation appearance, Valstrax's Risen Crimson Glow iteration serves as a contrast to Alatreon as seen in ''Iceborne''. Both are exceptionally powerful Elder Dragons suffering from extreme PowerIncontinence, but Alatreon historically was a solitary creature that rarely leaves its territory, whereas Valstrax is almost always on the move, and is one of the most powerful Elder Dragons without a dedicated home to call its own. Alatreon's elemental resistances change based on which modes it adopts, but in ''Iceborne'' at all points it is at least somewhat vulnerable to the Dragon element. Crimson Glow Valstrax, in contrast, is uniformly vulnerable to all elements ''except'' Dragon. Both Risen Crimson Glow and Alatreon were added in the fourth title updates of their respective games with an armor skill that converts elemental resistances into a damage boost, but Alatreon's was generally regarded as worthless whereas Risen Crimson Glow's is generally is regarded to have singlehandedly transformed the meta.

A Leviathan adorned with many fin-like appendages. As a leviathan, it bears aquatic traits and is able to swim in water. However, unlike most Leviathans (who are capable enough fighters on land but more agile in the water), it possesses abilities that allow it to 'dance' around land terrain with ease. Its underbelly is covered in fur, which is soaked with a special soapy substance that allows it to slide across land faster than it can run. Notably inoffensive for a large monster, even when living near human communities, the Guild normally does not permit the species to be hunted. ''Generations Ultimate'' introduces the deviant Soulseer Mizutsune, whose disability only made it stronger. In ''Rise'', an Apex variant can be found leading an entire Rampage. ''Sunbreak'' introduces a Rare Species which uses flaming bubbles much like the Soulseer and Apex versions.

* StuffBlowingUp: The razor scales act like delayed sticky charges, lodging themselves in victims and detonating a fraction of a second later. This allows frantic dodging to avoid the second hit and the status effect. The followup explosions are also dangerous if blocked with a shield, as they'll rapidly drain the stamina bar and leave the hunter exposed.
** This aspect was removed in ''Sunbreak'', so the scales now immediately cause bleed and stay in the ground for a short period of time for hunters to accidentally run into.

* PowerfulButInaccurate: Crimson Glow's dragon beam is very powerful and can one-shot hunters without sufficient defenses, but the windup is very obvious and it's fired in a straight line so any half-decent hunter could easily notice and evade it. In Master Rank, any hunter who dodges but subsequently runs forward near to the beam will get an unpleasant surprise, as Valstrax will now aim the beam ''back down'' to try and hit you a second time - this redirection has only a small radius though, so hunters can still get well out of the way if they remain aware.
