* AntiHero: Toshi is selfish and underhanded, and his first instinct upon rescuing the princess is to ransom her.
* BadassFamily: If his so-called descendant Satoru is to be believed, he evidently lived long enough to have a family.
* DarkIsNotEvil: A prominent example of black taking a heroic role in the storyline.
* DeadpanSnarker: He likes to snark.
* GuileHero: The quintessential example. In an early scene, he joins a group of assassins contracted to kill the ogre Hidetsugu. While the other assassins jump into the fray, Toshi hangs back. After all his companions are dead, he calmly approaches Hidetsugu and offers to become [[SwornBrothers blood brothers]] instead. (It works.)

The central villain of the Kamigawa Block, [[http://magiccards.info/chk/en/30.html Takeshi Konda]] is the ruler of a vast empire spanning most of Kamigawa. Seeking immortality so he could personally ensure that his kingdom would last forever, he committed a great crime that triggered the spirit war and eventually drove him to madness.

* AndIMustScream: His fate following his judgment by Kyodai. Essentially turned to stone and broken into many still conscious pieces, some of which still endure thousands of years later.
* BigBad: Of the Kamigawa block. For the longest while the only main antagonist to be purely White-aligned.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Konda's eyes are the only visual indication of his transformation. They change color and begin to swivel around randomly.
* TheCaligula: He's quite mad to begin with, and when Toshi steals his precious PowerSource, he goes into full crazy mode and devotes the full resources of his empire to its pursuit.
* TheDeterminator: Konda kidnapped a god in order to secure everlasting prosperity for his kingdom. The gods turned on the mortal world as a result, and by the events of the novels, twenty years of war and strife have reduced Konda's once-mighty kingdom to a scarred fraction of its former size. In spite of all the death and suffering, Konda's blind pride refuses to let him see anything but victory.
* TheEmperor: His role.
* AGodAmI: Konda fancies himself the all-powerful eternal ruler of the realm.
* TheHeavy: Konda is the central figure, not only of the mortal realm but of the story, and his actions drive the entire Kamigawa plot.

* NighInvulnerable: Stealing That Which Was Taken has granted him immense physical durability and immortality. To kill him Kyodai needed to petrify him and smash him into pieces. [[AndIMustScream Which are not dead]].
* ParentalNeglect: He cares more about his power than he does about his daughter, and rarely ever speaks to her or spends time with her.
* SanitySlippage: He becomes more and more obsessed as the trilogy progresses.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: His power turned him into TheCaligula.

* AxCrazy: A demon worshipper who kills and tortures at his leisure.
* BadassBookworm: He is rather erudite and a philosopher.
* TheDeterminator: He bulldozes through everything without stopping until the Oni of All Consuming Chaos is unleashed.
* DisproportionateRetribution: He levels the entire Minamo academy to the ground because ''one'' of their students killed his apprentice in self defense.
* TheDreaded: "Heartless Hidetsugu" is among the most terrifying figures of the Kamigawa underground, capable of even enslaving entire armies.
* EnemyMine: During the Phyrexian's multiversal invasion, Hidetsugu is freed from the spirit realm by none other than the Blue Divine Dragon Kairi, who's previous incarnation Keiga was murdered by Hidetsugu himself ages ago, in order to help fight off the invasion. Hidetsugu, for his part, happily agrees to help due his own amusement of the situation and desire to finally wreak some havoc again.
* FusionDance: Similar to how That Which Was Taken and Michiko merged to form Kyodai, he eventually manages to fuse with his master and effectively take over his position.
* ReligionOfEvil: Like most Kamigawa ogres he worships the omi demons, and was a rather devout servant of the Oni of All Consuming Chaos.
** He eventually ascends to becoming its GodOfEvil after consuming/fusing with said Oni, and still has the position by the time ''Neon Dynasty'' rolls around.
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler:When he realizes his master fled from battle, he chases him back to the Honden of the All-Consuming and beats the shit out of him.]]
* SealedEvilInACan: By the modern day, his now demonic form has been imprisoned in the spirit realm by Kyodai. He ends up being released by Kairi when [[GodzillaThreshold the Phyrexians invade Kamigawa]].

The Kami of the Crescent Moon, the mysterious, ever-smiling Mochi is the patron of the Soratami. He manipulated Konda into taking a piece of O-Kagachi as part of a plot to gain more jurisdiction than just a few moon phases.

* BigBadWannabe: His influence helped cause the Kami War. His role in the narrative, however, serves primarily to shed light to the protagonists (and the reader) on the origins of the War (though he tends to gloss over his own involvement). He seeks the eventual destruction of Konda's kingdom as well as the rest of the non-soratami civilisations so that his worshippers, the Soratami, can remake the world in their image. However, shortly after his Soratami armada is finally launched to realize his goals, Konda discovers Mochi's betrayal and wipes out the Soratami fleet before they can do any real damage beyond the Jukai Forest and Takenuma Swamp massacres and getting a group of Orochi eaten by O-Kagachi, bringing Mochi's endgame to a screeching halt.
* TheChessmaster: A very clever trickster; he might have succeeded in his plan had his former ally, Konda, not discovered his treachery.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Exceptionally polite, even as he plots genocide.
* ForTheEvulz: While his primary motivation was perfecting the world [[InTheirOwnImage in his image]], he also just wanted to sate his curiosity. Apparently he was really curious about all manner of war time atrocities.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Torn apart by the demonic Hidetsugu at the end of the novels.]] It is oh so satisfying.
* MeaningfulName: An especially clever and elusive one; "mochi" is rice dough, which the chubby little kami's body resembles. In Japanese lore, the moon holds the image of a rabbit pounding mochi dough (hence the association with the moon). Mochi's followers, the Soratami (or Moonfolk), bear physical similarities to rabbits. There's also a more direct pun involved: "mochi" can be short for "mochizuki" (望月), or "full moon".
* OmnicidalManiac: His ideal of "perfection" = get as many non-soratami life forms killed as possible.
* SmugSnake: His grandiose genocidal plans are ultimately interrupted and he stops being able to put teeth behind his arrogance.
* SmugSmiler: His grotesque smile in his card art s made even worse in narration.

* KarmicDeath: For wiping Jace's memories to turn him into his underling, Jace returned the favor by tearing everything he could out of Alhammaret's mind, during their final duel. Up to and including the memories of how to breathe.
* ManipulativeBastard: As soon as Jace's spark ignited, Alhammaret wiped the memory of it from Jace's mind, simply to retain control of him.
* PlayingBothSides: The main crux of his scheme: he would send Jace to gather and sell intelligence to both sides of a war under the guise of it being necessary for his work as arbiter but wiping Jace's memory each time so he didn't notice he was doing so for both sides. Jace only figured out the truth when he found himself in a soldier's memories.

* GoodParents: They even tried to flee the country to keep their daughter from the Consulate, but the responsible officer caught up, killed them, and would have publicly executed Chandra had her spark not ignited.
* NeverFoundTheBody: Only Kiran is explicitly shown to have been killed. [[spoiler: That would be because Pia is still alive.]]
* SoProudOfYou: They were proud of Chandra being a natural pyromancer.

* BadPowersGoodPeople: Yahenni is friendly and willing to help the Gatewatch when they were in need, and eventually came to work with the rebels to overthrow the Consulate, but happens to an energy vampire whose 'expertise' is draining people of their life force.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Went from a very rich Aetherborn hedonist who was days away from dying, to a near unstoppable killing machine that can drain the life force out every person on a sky ship by touching it.

* DiedHappilyEverAfter: While Nissa can do nothing to prevent the inevitable, she does tell Yahenni [[spoiler:the truth about the Multiverse, how aetherborn are made of the literal stuff of worlds. Yahenni dies content, knowing that they are becoming one with the universe.]]
* DyingAlone: Their deepest fear; aetherborn throw lavish Penultimate Parties to avoid this fate, but Yahenni cannot due to the Consul's curfews and restrictions. They eventually manage to hold such a party once the Consulate is subdued.
* LifeDrinker: Some aetherborn can extend their lives taking in the life force of others. Yahenni is one, but doesn't like to [[spoiler:because in doing so, they feel everything the victim feels]].
* MookHorrorShow: The consulate soldiers on Yahenni, Undying Partisan, and Yahenni's expertise are not having the best of days, and they won't be having any worse ones.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Is one of the rare "gifted" aetherborn that can drain the life energy of other sentient beings to prolong their own lifespan. However, Yahenni abhors using such power to simply live longer, insisting in their last moments that they will not live their life as a killer.

The God of Death and self-proclaimed Lord High Ruler of the Lands of Istfell and of the dead of all the Realms, Egon is one of the oldest Skoti, but the Cosmos Elixir causes him to age backwards and gives him the appearance and attitude of a teenager.

* AuthorityInNameOnly: While he proclaims himself the god of all dead, Egon cannot enter Starnheim, he is hated in Karfell and the spirits of Istfell only vaguely accept his rule and need to be subjected to his godly magic to do anything for him.
* BargainWithHeaven: Narfi made a deal with him, granting him warriors to finish off the Einir gods while allowing the king and his people to becomes [[OurZombiesAreDifferent draugr]].

* ItCanThink: For a lack of better words, Emrakul somehow converses with the Gatewatch, and is capable of making several actions normally done by sapient species, such playing chess with Jace, [[spoiler:and willingly sealing herself in the moon.]]
* TheJuggernaut: When one of these three is on the prowl, there's very few things that can make them so much as flinch. Emrakul's rampage on Eldritch Moon stands out as she bulldozed through everything that stood in her way, and was handing the Gatewatch's arses to them before she sealed herself, ''meaning that that she only stopped because she wanted to stop.'' This extends to them in terms of gameplay as well. The Eldrazi titans are powerful creatures that can easily do a ton of damage in a short time and aren't easy to stop, though their cost makes it very hard to get them out. Aside from being among the strongest creatures in the game, their initial three cards also have an effect where if they're put into the graveyard in any way, the graveyard is shuffled back into its player's deck. They also have the annihilator keyword, where defending players have to sacrifice permanents when they attack.
** [[https://scryfall.com/card/uma/6/kozilek-butcher-of-truth Kozilek, Butcher of Truth]] is more notable for his draw effect but his second card, [[https://scryfall.com/card/ogw/4/kozilek-the-great-distortion Kozilek, the Great Distortion]], has the menace keyword so he can only be blocked by two or more creatures. He also allows his controlling player to discard a card with specific mana cost to counter a spell of the same value.

A target permanent is destroyed when the former is cast, while casting the latter exiles two target permanents. The latter card also forces the opponent exile the top 20 cards of their library everytime time he attacks.
** Emrakul is the strongest of the three, fitting as her cards are the most expensive to cast. [[https://scryfall.com/card/plist/2/emrakul-the-aeons-torn Emrakul, the Aeons Torn]] has a power and toughness of 15, the highest in the game at the time aside from a creature released in Unhinged, and can't be countered. She has annihilator 6, the highest of any creature with that keyword, forcing a defending player to sacrifice six permanents, and that is before she even deals damage. She has protection from colored spells, which between that and the fact that she can't be countered means most spells won't be able to stop her. If the player using her actually manage to cast Emrakul by paying her cost they get an extra turn. [[https://scryfall.com/card/emn/6/emrakul-the-promised-end Emrakul, the Promised End]] is a bit weaker, bringing down to a 13/13, but has a lower cost and an ability which lowers it for each type of card in her controller's graveyard, has the trample keyword and protection from instants. When cast she also gives her controller control of the opponent's next turn.
* MechanicallyUnusualClass: The processor mechanic in ''Battle for Zendikar'' is something R&D almost never does because they aren't fans of messing about with the exile zone, caring about colourless mana specifically was mostly unique to Kozilek in ''Oath of the Gatewatch'', and while double-faced cards existed before Emrakul's arrival on Innistrad, meld -- a mechanic in which two cards merge into one horrible abomination -- did not. Emrakul herself, in her ''Eldritch Moon'' printing, is one of the few cards of her time which has the protection keyword, when that keyword itself was being phased out in favour of more intuitive mechanics like hexproof and indestructible.
* MindRape: Their mere presence can cause madness, if you aren't ripped to shreds by the warped reality around them. And of course, there are always [[http://magiccards.info/roe/en/115.html more active methods]]. Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, is confirmed in the ''Battle for Zendikar'' fat pack booklet to be the worst for your sanity, although the others are no slouch, especially given the ingest mechanic. Emrakul's arrival on Innistrad was not good for the mental health of many people at all, although HeroicWillpower and ThePowerOfLove can help. Gameplay-wise, Emrakul lets you take control of your opponent's turn before giving your opponent a proper turn, representing Emrakul temporarily taking control of them herself before they revert to lucidity.
* MotherOfAThousandYoung: Each titan creates thousands, if not millions, of spawn in their image.
* NighInvulnerable: Emrakul is [[AntiMagic immune to most colored magic]]. Ulamog is [[ImmuneToBullets indestructible]]. Kozilek doesn't have any comparable protection ability, but [[DamageSpongeBoss 12 toughness is pretty hefty anyway]]. Lore-wise, the titans at full strength are nearly impossible to kill, even for nearly god-like pre-mending planeswalkers.
** In their later forms, Emrakul is immune to instants and gets a turn of forcing you to make the worst available decisions (plus having a 13/13 body), Kozilek can defend itself by discarding cards to turn them into counterspells, and Ulamog is... still indestructible.
** FightingAShadow: Even their massively powerful titan bodies are mere projections of their true forms in the Blind Eternities. Kozilek and Ulamog were eventually killed by dragging more of their true forms into Zendikar.
* NonElemental: They're too alien to correspond to any color of mana.
* OutsideContextProblem: The Eldrazi are native to the Blind Eternities, meaning that they are alien to basically everyone, everywhere. This is especially true for Emrakul, whose arrival boots out the GothicHorror elements of Innistrad and ushers in a CosmicHorrorStory.
