* FreudianExcuse: Years of bullying and severe self-esteem issues didn't do wonders for her mind, turning her into a revenge-driven borderline psycho who can only barely hide it on her best days. She also seems to suffer abandonment issues from an absent father and neglectful, alcoholic mother, explaining her sudden attachment to Bob Armstrong.
* GoodGirlGoneBad: Patty spent most of her childhood being ostracized (due to her heaviness and self-esteem issues) and thus didn't have many opportunities for romance. Once she loses the weight, she becomes a lot more promiscuous and flirty.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Averted. Though she appears to be sweet at first, later episodes show her to be a lot more twisted than she initially lets on.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Patty is unstable, erratic and prone to irrational rage when things don't go her way. Though some of this is likely to stem from her traumatic home life and the absence of her father, any specific mental disorders Patty has are unknown.

* ButNotTooBlack: In-Universe. Magnolia is confused when she's asked to consider attending an all-black college, as she's mixed race and doesn't feel as though she fits in with either black or white people too well.
