Her mind becomes a little sharper if she is shown an object that reminds her of a specific person or event from her past.

* ThePromise: After her son's death, she promised to herself she'll find his murderer and kill him with her own hands. [[spoiler:In "A Mother's Revenge", she holds on her promise as she confronts and kills Scott after finding out the truth]].

* AbusiveParents: It's heavily implied that he beats his kids. We only see him too wasted to move.

* InsaneEqualsViolent: Surprisingly [[AvertedTrope Averted.]] He's very clearly mentally disturbed, but he's ''not'' violent because of it. He's simply paranoid and only turns to a violent response when Carter, who he's terrified of, aggressively interrogates and assaults him.

* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: He has very clear prejudice against the mentally ill, accusing Nathaniel of "hearing voices" that he kills people to silence. In reality, Nathaniiel has a persecution complex and likely a good number of stress related mental illnesses and ''not'' schizophrenia.[[labelnote:*]]It should be noted that even if he did, voices that tell people to kill is a harmful stereotype about schizophrenics and very much doesn't apply to the greater majority of them.[[/labelnote]]
