* MachoCamp: He puts on make-up, wears a woman's kimono, ans is one of the hugest humans in the series in terms of bulk.

* AllTheOtherReindeer: Everybody is afraid of him and shun him as a result. One of the endings in the anime show him as a child where none of the other children wanted to play with him.

* BattleStrip: Always discards his kimono before he goes into battle.

After being given a second chance upon her release from prison, Catherine is shown to be devoted enough to put her own life on the line to protect Otose.

* YamatoNadeshiko: Tama is gentle, docile, helpful, strong-willed, excellent at household chores, loyal to a fault and completely dedicated to her "family".

* MasterOfUnlocking: Lockpicking is her specialty, which she got from her past as a cat burglar, to the point of being sent to free Saigo's son from his cell in the Four Devas Arc.
* ReformedButRejected: Subverted. Catherine couldn't find a job after her release from prison due to her criminal record. Otose takes her in after finding her reduced to mendicity on the street and she now works full time at Otose's bar.

* ReformedButRejected: Catherine was allowed to work at the snack bar again following her release from prison because nobody else would hire her due to her criminal record.

* UndyingLoyalty: Despite everything, she's extremely devoted to Otose for having given her a second chance at life.

Chogoro the Firefox is a famous thief dressed in white who wears a fox mask. He has been pursued by Heiji Kozenigata for 10 years, but has never been caught. When he is not being a thief, he serves drinks at a street bar that Kozenigata frequents. He is a former member of the Nine-Tails Fox Gang of Thieves, a group of nine thieves trained as ninjas, but he split from them 30 years ago during a robbery in Kyoto. They later commit various murders in Kyoto and frames him for it, forcing him out of retirement as he sends out a calling card to steal a golden tofu.

* DefectorFromDecadence: He split from the Nine-Tails Fox Gang 30 years ago in Kyoto, saving Kozenigata after the gang had murdered his parents.

* FrameUp: He is framed as a murderer by the rest of the Nina-Tails Fox Gang, forcing him to come out of retirement as a thief.

* InTheBack: At the end of the arc he is stabbed in the back by his replacement in the Nine-Tails Fox Gang. He still manages to survive his injury on top of falling into the fire.

* {{Ninja}}: While he is a thief, he and the rest of the Nine-Tails Fox Gang are trained and skilled in the ways of the ninja.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her often blunt attitude, she sincerely cares for the Yorozuya and her employees, Catherine and Tama (even though Catherine's very introduction into the series was trying to steal from Otose) , going as far as to call them her family. This kindness was more obvious when she was a young woman, as she secretly fed poor children food from her job (and got fired for it).

* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Based on Saigo Takamori of the late Edo period, a samurai who made a huge impact in Japanese history.

* YamatoNadeshiko: Tama is gentle, docile, helpful, strong-willed, excellent at house chores, loyal to a fault and completely dedicated to her "family".

* NewJobAsThePlotDemands: Though it's obvious why he can't hold down a stable job, (thanks to his bad luck and wild friends,) the jobs he does have from episode to episode are usually super convenient to the plot. For example, being a lifeguard when the Shogun just happens to want to take a swim, or working at a festival when there just happens to be a festival episode.

* IfItsYouItsOkay: He says something to this effect to [[spoiler:Gin during the Scandal Arc]]. Though he mainly tries to stay as faithful to Hatsu as he can, he's oggled a few women and visited a few hostess bars throughout the series. He's also displayed a kind of cool understanding when it looked like [[NotWhatItLooksLike Gin was 'doing a thing' with Hattori]]. In this case, however, it's unclear if he just happens to be BiTheWay, or if the idea of being in a serious relationship with [[spoiler:Gintoki]] is appealing enough to Hasegawa that he'd jump across the sexuality spectrum for him.

** And then again in [[spoiler: the last arc of the series, when she, Kintoki and the robots used the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Gengai Cannon in order to release a lethal machine virus on the air, which seemingly kills her too. However, the epilogue reveals that she survived, but was rendered inoperative for two years. The framing device for the final chapter is a recording that Gintoki makes for Tama to get her up to speed on what occurred during the TimeSkip.]]
