Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai is a special Toku film commemorating the 25th anniversary of Super Sentai.
When Tsuetsue and Yabaiba awaken the terrible Lost Highness Duke Org Rakushaasa, the true leader of the Orgs and most powerful Highness, the Gaoranger are stripped of their fighting spirit and defeated by the overwhelming might of the new enemy and his enhanced Org troops. After Red is captured, the others must be trained and encouraged by their predecessor Sentai alumni and in the process truly discover what it means to be a Sentai warrior.
Tropes
- Actor Allusion: Through the use of Stock Footage, Akira Shinmei and Councillor Naoyuki Miura are seen leading the Red Mecha into battle, and it is indicated that Banba had anticipated them. All three characters are played by Hiroshi Miyauchi.
- All Just a Dream: The ending hints that the entire experience with Rakushaasa and the past Sentai was a dream experienced by Tetomu. Though The Narrator affirms that it happened, because it was witnessed by you.
- An Aesop: Each of the returning Legends provide one.
- Yusuke: Fear of death will only cripple your performance in battle.
- Gouki: True strength can only come from having something to protect.
- Daimon: In order to defeat an enemy, you need to defeat yourself first.
- Miku provides two: If you’re stressed, you won’t be able to produce good results and don’t try to think for others because they can’t.
- Ass Kicking Pose: Notably, one is improvised for Red Turbo during the Red Warriors' roll call, since Turboranger did not have a conventional In the Name of the Moon sequence.
- Big Bad: Lost Highness Duke Rakushaasa.
- Calling Your Attacks: As per Sentai tradition, moreso in the final battle.
- Clip Show: Of the entire Super Sentai franchise up to this point.
- Demoted to Extra: The then relatively recent Sixth Ranger archetype is not touched upon here, as this film takes place prior to the introduction of Gaoranger's own Tsukumaro "Shirogane" Oogami (Gao Silver). The previous five Sixth Rangers appear only in clips showcasing other archetypes.
- Finishing Move: This film has Big One performing the "Big One Finish" with his Big Baton. This attack would later be reprised when Gokai Blue becomes Big One.
- Gaoranger Storm, a homage to the Goranger Storm soccer ball, is ball of light created by the Gaorangers, the Dream Sentai, and the Red Warriors. Gao Red kicks it to annihilate Rakushaasa once and for all. The finishing call is "Evil spirit, purify." (Jaki Jōsan).
- In the Name of the Moon: A staple for Sentai Versus movies, the "We are Super Sentai!" roll call starting with the Gaorangers then going through the Dream Sentai.Yusuke: Red Falcon!Gouki: GingaBlue: Gouki!Miku: MegaPink!Daimon: GoYellow!Sokichi: Big One!Kakeru: The Blazing Lion, Gao Red!Gaku: The Noble Eagle, Gao Yellow!Kai: The Surging Shark, Gao Blue!Soutarou: The Iron Bison, Gao Black!Sae: The Belle Tiger, Gao White!Kakeru: Where there is life, there is a roar of justice! Hyakujuu Sentai!Gaorangers: Gaoranger!Sokichi: We are...noteAll: Super Sentai!
- Exaggerated when the first 24 Red Rangers appear and introduce themselves one by one.
- Law of Chromatic Superiority: Played straight in most cases. All of the Humongous Mecha associated with the past Red Rangers assemble to tackle the giant Rakushaasa. The first 24 Red Rangers assemble to inspire the Gaorangers, Gao Red in particular, to perservere before imbuing the Gaoranger Storm with their power. Averted in the case of the Dream Sentai, which is led by Big One, a predominantly white-colored hero, with Red Falcon as a secondary.
- Master Swordsman: A Sentai archetype which Yusuke shares with Gaoranger's Gaku. Examples from Sentai history acknowledged include Dia Jack, Battle France, VulEagle, DynaRed, Red One, Change Dragon, Red Flash, Red Mask, Red Turbo, Black Turbo, Five Red, Red Hawk, Black Condor, Tyranno Ranger, Ryuu Ranger, Kiba Ranger, Ninja Blue, Ninja Red, OhRed, KingRanger, Red Racer, MegaRed, MegaSilver, GingaRed, GoRed, TimeRed, TimeGreen and TimeFire.
- Stock Footage: An abundance from Super Sentai history is used here.
- The Big Guy: As well as fulfilling this Sentai archetype on the Dream Sentai, Gouki teaches this to his Gaoranger counterpart, Soutarou. Examples from Sentai history acknowledged include Ki Ranger, Clover King, Battle Cossack, DenziYellow, DynaYellow, Green Flash, Black Mask, Black Bison, Green Sai, Five Blue, Yellow Owl, MammothRanger, DragonRanger, NinjaYellow, OhGreen, Green Racer, MegaBlack, GoBlue and TimeYellow.
- The Smart Guy: As well as fulfilling this Sentai archetype on the Dream Sentai, Daimon teaches this to his Gaoranger counterpart, Kai. Examples from Sentai history acknowledged include Aka Ranger, Mido Ranger, AoRanger, Spade Ace, Battle Japan, Battle Kenya, DenziRed, DenziBlue, DenziGreen, DenziYellow, VulShark, Goggle Red, Goggle Black, Goggle Blue, DynaBlack, DynaBlue, Green Two, Blue Three, Change Griffin, Change Pegasus, Blue Flash, Blue Mask, Yellow Lion, Yellow Turbo, Blue Turbo, Five Black, TigerRanger, TriceraRanger, KirinRanger, TenmaRanger, ShishiRanger, NinjaBlack, OhBlue, Blue Racer, MegaBlue, GingaGreen, GingaYellow, GoGreen and TimeBlue.
- The Smurfette Principle: Miku is the only female Ranger on the Dream Sentai and thus the counterpart to Sae.
- Transformation Sequence: Unlike other Vs. movies, the Gaorangers and their predecessors use their stock sequences here.
- Versus Title: In this case, there is no conflict between the Sentai as the special depicts the seniors teaching the Gaorangers about their fights and the meaning of being a hero.
- World of Action Girls: As well as fulfilling this Sentai archetype on the Dream Sentai, Miku teaches this to her Gaoranger counterpart, Sae. Examples from Sentai history acknowledged include Momo Ranger, Heart Queen, Miss America, DenziPink, Goggle Pink, DynaPink, Yellow Four, Pink Five, Change Mermaid, Change Phoenix, Yellow Flash, Pink Flash, Yellow Mask, Pink Mask, Blue Dolphin, Pink Turbo, Five Yellow, Five Pink, Blue Swallow, White Swan, PteraRanger, HououRanger, NinjaWhite, OhYellow, OhPink, Yellow Racer, Pink Racer, MegaYellow, MegaPink, GingaPink, GoPink and TimePink.
