** JerkassWoobie: Some pretty awful things happen to her. For example, [[spoiler:she turns into a TARDIS, and just to [[ItGotWorse make it worse]], the Time Lords try to capture her for "breeding purposes]]. Whenever Fitz or the Doctor tries to show her any sympathy, [[DontYouDarePityMe she doesn't take it well]].

* BizarreHumanBiology: The ''EighthDoctorAdventures'' novel ''The Blue Angel'' features an AlternateRealityEpisode in which the Doctor is [[AmbiguouslyHuman theoretically human]]. He has two hearts, no navel, and an unusual aversion to the cold. It's probably related to the fact that [[HalfHumanHybrid his mother is a]] [[OurMermaidsAreDifferent mermaid]].

* BiTheWay: He just happens to mention in an internal monologue that he'd quite like to shag the Doctor, and worries more about the fact that he's thinking about a thing like that while in mortal danger and needs to get his priorities straight than that he's a closet bisexual.
* BookDumb: With good reason. His teachers were just as prejudiced against his half-German heritage as anyone else. School was not fun for Fitz.

[[UnpleasableFanbase Some fans]] have referred to him as "the congenital idiot", or "[[DumbIsGood the congenial idiot]]".[[hottip:*:"congenial", although making more sense, is less common.]] He gives the impression of having less ObfuscatingStupidity and more genuine, guileless foolishness than most Doctors, but he is regularly shown to actually have brains he just doesn't always use.
* [[InnocentFanserviceGirl Innocent Fanservice Guy]] - He seems to consider life clothing-optional, although recognizes that the preference is for clothing. Good thing he's [[EstrogenBrigadeBait attractive]].
* KaleidoscopeEyes - Usually [[BlueEyes blue]], but sometimes [[GreyEyes grey]] or [[GreenEyes green]]. DependingOnTheWriter and his own mercurial personality, a lot of the associated characteristics of each eye color apply.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia - It's suggested that it might be [[JustifiedTrope justified]] by the fact that when he starts to get his memory back, he still finds it useful to pick and choose the things he lets people find out he remembers.
* MusclesAreMeaningless - Bony fingers: all the better to stab you with. He doesn't even blink at {{Bridal Carry}}ing grown men ([[HoYay such as Fitz]]).

* TeamChef - Very much so. While Fitz is also said to be a competent cook, the Doctor is an accomplished chef, it seems. In ''Camera Obscura'', he stress-bakes a Lady Baltimore cake and worries about its "very complicated icing." In ''Year of Intelligent Tigers'', he makes a massive picnic for his friends and is said to hold several dinner parties in his flat. His AlternateUniverse counterpart in ''The Blue Angel'' also makes a large meal for his visitors and frets over ruining the potatoes. This doesn't include small moments when he happens to just carry food with him (apples, bits of candy, etc) to give his companions on a moment's notice. He's ''very'' much this trope.
* ThroughHisStomach: That said, the Doctor only seems to cook for his {{Nakama}} and people he cares about. In ''Timeless'', he makes Anji a very nice omelette but immediately after won't do the same for the current OneShotCharacter, claiming to be bored with cooking.

The Eighth Doctor's first companion in the [=EDAs=]. She's 18 years old at the beginning of her run and comes from '90s England - a cheerful, goody-goody blonde girl who hates drugs! [[spoiler: Except she ''isn't'' - she was supposed to be a dark-haired drug addict. She was altered into the 'perfect companion' by the TARDIS/the Doctor's subconscious. After reality starts falling apart, she is replaced by this original self, who ends up sacrificing herself to bring this version back to save the Doctor.]]

* AudienceSurrogate - in a let's-try-to-appeal-to-young-girls kind of way. It did work, more or less.

He met the Doctor in 1963, when he was 27. He plays the guitar. He's ''DoctorWho''[='=]s longest-running companion if the expanded universe is accounted for, and was in a BigFinish audio in the summer of 2009.

* MessyHair - His hair is described as "unkempt", "fluffy", "squiggly", "straggly", etc. Between his laziness and the fact he's the kind of musician for whom just-got-laid hair is ''de rigeur'', it's to be expected.
* MemeticOutfit - He often wears leather coats, which is probably mentioned more often in {{fandom}} than in canon. It helps that it's widely-held {{fanon}} that the Ninth Doctor's leather coat is [[TragicKeepsake the same one]].

* NobodyPoops - For some reason, he's the only character in the series who's ever mentioned to occasionally have to take a leak. It only seems to come up in situations where it makes him that much more sympathetic.

By her standards, that's a big deal.

A twentysomething-ish futures trader who joins the Eighth Doctor in the 21st century. To date, the only companion of Asian descent. Her first book is ''[[SoBadItsHorrible Escape Velocity]]''.[[hottip:* :Due to {{Discontinuity}}, it is often jokingly said to have been ''[=EarthWorld=]''.]]

* ArthurDent - Moreso than any of the other companions.

* BollywoodNerd - She's a bit of a geek about economics; she's been known to watch documentaries on the subject.
* BrownEyes - Unsurprisingly. However, she's perhaps the most sensible and normal character in the main cast.

A recurring villain starting from ''The Adventuress of Henrietta Street''. He was born in the 18th century, and wants to clean up the space-time continuum, which tends to make him a bad guy as it's doing just fine the way it is.

* AGlassOfChianti - Anji earns his respect by knowing the right way to drink brandy.
* AlwaysABiggerFish - He manages to save the Doctor at one point in an unintentional and [[OrganTheft rather unconventional]] way.
* AntiVillain - A little more intentionally nasty than most, though.
* AuthorAvatar - He's basically LawrenceMiles's eviller, ballsier, tougher twin.
* BadassNormal - He is somehow capable of [[spoiler:ripping a heart out of his chest]], then doing nothing about the big hole in his chest before he makes a dramatic exit while carrying a fully-grown woman.
* BaldOfEvil - Well, okay, more like Extremely Close-Cropped Hair Of Evil.

* EnemyMine - He works together with the Doctor about as often as they work against each other.

He's far from the same character with the SerialNumbersFiledOff, but they have a lot of similar personality traits ([[YouMakeMeSic pedantry]], [[ManOfWealthAndTaste a fondness for elegant dark clothes]], [[DeadpanSnarker snarkiness]], etc.), they have rather similar relationships to the Doctor, and both function as a recurring villain who often [[EnemyMine collaborates with the Doctor against a more immediate menace]]. Interestingly, Lawrence Miles, who came up with Sabbath, objected to Sabbath's gradual drift into {{Suspiciously Similar Substitute}}hood, as he intended the character as more of a DarkerAndEdgier version of the Doctor.

** ''Occasionally''? Lloyd Rose's ''Camera Obscura'' and parts of Justin Richard's ''Sometime Never...'' are absolutely full of subtext. In the former, all the Doctor's attempts to "annoy" Sabbath are pretty much [[BelligerentSexualTension pigtail-pulling and flirting]].
** It takes a turn for the sincere and heartwarming when Sabbath admits to being "more than a little fond of" the Doctor. [[spoiler:Since he's supposed to kill the Doctor, he may qualify as InLoveWithTheMark.]]

* KickTheDog - He wastes basically no time doing this. He starts out ''The Adventuress of Henrietta Street'' giving the impression he's going to be hardly antagonistic enough to count as a FriendlyEnemy. And then he [[NightmareFuelUnleaded rips out the Doctor's heart]].

* ManOfWealthAndTaste - He's often very well-dressed (ie., "a beautifully tailored dark suit"), although he sometimes wears a coat which he feels the need to justify by saying he wears it "in a spirit of irony".

* ManOfWealthAndTaste - He's often well-dressed, although he sometimes wears a coat which he feels the need to justify by saying he wears it "in a spirit of irony".

** ''Occasionally''? Lloyd Rose's ''Camera Obscura'' and parts of Justin Richard's ''Sometime Never...'' are absolutely full of subtext. In the former, all the Doctor's attempts to "annoy" Sabbath are pretty much pigtail-pulling and flirting.

* BrokenHero - If you were to simplify Fitz's character into a single trope, it would be this one. His history is fraught with more terrible and spirit-break events than most companions you could name. And yet, he maintains a snarky but fun-loving attitude.[[hottip:*: It may be significant that the first thing Fitz is ever shown as doing is pretending to be someone else. It is very obviously a coping mechanism. Possibly, his cheerful happy demeanor is a bit BecomingTheMask, in that he seems so undamaged by his past because he's spent so long pretending not to be.]]
