* DemotedToExtra: Oh good lord. Not only are his canon duels with Kaiba unchanged, but even his smaller appearances have been axed insofar. For example, in chapter 73 when Alister is supposed to take Rafael away from Death Valley with a helicopter, one of Gundham's mind controlled giant birds takes his place.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Courtesy of his looks and wardrobe.
* TheRival: To Seto Kaiba in the Orichalcos arc, as per canon. Hiyoko even lampshades and teases their dynamic as Alister having a "hate-boner" for Kaiba, much to his protests.

Added DiffLines:

* CassandraTruth: After being exposed to how twisted Junko is during their duel, Rafael tries to expose her to Yugi and his allies. Unfortunately, Junko's acting and manipulation of the situation leaves everyone (even his sister) refusing to believe his claims, with any dangerous tendencies on her part written off as the Seal's effect on her.

* AchillesHeel: His Guardian strategy while very potent when pulled of perfectly, has ''many'' obvious and exploitable flaws that are easy to capitalize on: First off is obviously how his Guardians require their respective Equip Spell to be on the field as otherwise they cannot be Summoned making any Spell/Trap removal an instant hindrance to him. Secondly, his Guarded Treasure Spell limits his starting hand in order to allow him an additional draw in his Draw Phases which can easily be countered by once again - Spell/Trap destruction, or a card that skips his Draw Phase like Time Seal. Third and lastly while he has numerous ways to retreive his monsters from the Graveyard, he has little ways to retrieve them if they are removed via other means such as banishing.

* DamageSpongeBoss: His dueling strategy is using cards that pour thousands upon thousands of life points into him, ensuring he can take lots of damage without even blinking, while his Spirit Monsters harass you.
* DirtyCoward: He uses Mokuba as a human shield in his duel against Kaiba, as in canon.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: [[spoiler:He truly cares for his OnlyFriend, Miho. Even during his duels with Kaiba and Makoto, where he comes very close to crossing the MoralEventHorizon, he's still kind to her.]]

* IAmNotLeftHanded: Think just because he cheats he's a wimp? Think again; his strategy is very sound, using Spirit Monsters in combination with Spring of Rebirth to consistently perform hit-and-run attacks and raise his life points.
* ISurrenderSuckers: After losing to [[spoiler:Makoto]], he tries to cheat his way back to the real world by attempting to take his opponent's body by force as in canon. Unfortunately for him, Kaiba introduces him to fist before he can do so.
* {{Jerkass}}: Very much so, as Chapter 48 shows.

[[spoiler:Plus there's the whole CruelToBeKind thing...]]
* LonelyTogether: [[spoiler:He and Miho were all the other had while trapped in the virtual world.]]
* NobleDemon: Antagonistic he may be, but Noah has standards he'll follow. Leaving alone people he has no qualms with is one, as is sticking to his word, and he's protective of [[spoiler:Miho]], who he does care about. Subverted hard during his duels with Kaiba and [[spoiler:Makoto]], though, as he throws away every one of his morals to try and win.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's chronologically a teenager, but is stuck in the body of a child.
* PetTheDog:
** He initially tells everyone at the tournament that he wants them ''all'' off the blimp. When Mikan timidly steps forward and explains that she's a nurse and can't leave her injured patients, he amends this so she can stay to care for them. He also allows Espa Roba to stay with his brothers and Gundham [[spoiler:to stay with Sonia]].

!Gansley
* KilledOffScreen: Not exactly ''killed'', but Yugi still duels and defeats him entirely off-screen. WordOfGod is that it would go the same way, and he didn't want to show a ForegoneConclusion.

!Crump
* AdaptationalHeroism[=/=]AdaptationalVillainy: His sadistic delight in his opponent slowly freezing to death is absent--as is the actual freezing. However, at the same time, he had a sympathetic backstory about his AbusiveParents and only finding comfort in penguins. None of that is mentioned here.
* AdaptationalWimp: In canon he proved himself to be quite the forminable opponent against the inexperienced Téa. In this story however his opponent of choice is the more skilled and experienced Chiaki who was in control throughout their duel and proceeds to steal the win from under his nose.
* DirtyOldMan: Unnervingly, he specifically mentions wanting the body of a teenage girl, and looked up Chiaki's breast size before deciding on her. She's understandably grossed out by this.
* EverythingsBetterWithPenguins: Still using his penguin-themed deck.
* GoodWithNumbers: Not only was he once [=KaibaCorp's=] head account, he actually attended Hope's Peak Academy as the Ultimate Mathematician.
* SmugSnake: He remains arrogant about his ability to win all throughout his duel with Chiaki, [[OhCrap right until the end]].
* TheSpock: He uses number-crunching to calculate his odds of winning and predict what his opponent is going to do.

!Johnson
* AmoralAttorney: He was a lawyer while he still had his body, hosts his duel with Celeste in a courthouse, and uses a lot of legalistic terminology. He also cheats the entire time [[spoiler:except when her luck overrides it at the end.]]
* FixingTheGame: As in his canon duel against Joey, he rigs his duel with Celeste so that all her die rolls and bets go south. [[spoiler:However, her talent is so strong that this eventually stops working.]]
* FusionDance: His deck relies on these.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He expresses disgusts with gamblers for wasting their lives, mocks the notion of luck, and claims the house always comes to collect. What stops this from being EvenEvilHasStandards is that Johnson is perfectly willing to cheat himself in order to win.
* InsistentTerminology: He repeatedly addresses Celeste with [[spoiler:her real name, Taeko Yasuhiro]].
* SmugSnake: Like Crump, he lords a superior attitude over his opponent the whole duel.
* ThisCannotBe: He mentally exclaims "inconceivable!" when [[spoiler:Celeste's luck begins beating his fixed die rolls.]] Then again when he realizes he's about to lose.

!Nezbitt
* ArmsDealer: He was in charge of [=KaibaCorp's=] technological, and especially weapons, development, while Gozaburo was around.
* ChildHater: He despises Kaiba wanting to pander to children with [=KaibaCorp=], and sneers that technology shouldn't be wasted on games for them.
* TheComicallySerious: His stoicism and seriousness in the face of [[GenkiGirl Ibuki's]] increasing energy and noise volume makes him come off as this.
* HumongousMecha: Becomes one when he fuses his deck master with Machine King, creating Perfect Machine King.
* HypocrisyNod: He looks down on Duel Monsters as a stupid children's card game, yet as Ibuki points out, is playing it himself. He actually agrees with her, lamenting that it's his only choice and once he gets back to the real world, he'll never touch a duel disk again.
* IronicEcho: The first time Komaru takes damage during the duel, she refers to it as a minor setback. When Nezbitt takes damage later, he does the same thing. Ibuki takes the opportunity, in typical Ibuki fashion, [[LampshadeHanging to hang a lampshade]] on this trope's use.
* MisanthropeSupreme: Has a very dim view of humans, favoring machines over them and believing that they're utterly inferior to robots.
* ThisCannotBe: Screams it word for word when Ibuki annihilates him.
* VillainHasAPoint: When his opponents are incredulous over his dismissal of games, Nezbitt counters that games won't protect people from armies or war. While he's wrong about restricting technology to only adults, he does have a point, and with [[GreaterScopeVillain Junko]] lurking in the background they may very well need real weapons.
* WouldHarmAChild: His target for a new body is Komaru, who, since this is set around the time period of [[Anime/DanganRonpa3 Danganronpa 3's Despair Arc]], is ''a pre-teen''! Of his three opponents in the duel, she's the one he most focuses on attacking, and he shows her no mercy.

[[folder: Rafael Nevermind]]
* AloofBigBrother: To Sonia, considering she's on the opposing side and yet Rafael himself refuses to reach out to her despite the supposed death of his family being what led to his DespairEventHorizon in the first place. Junko naturally has a ''field day'' calling him out on his aloofness.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: Junko decides she doesn't want to kill Hajime and Chiaki's baby, but not because he's a baby and more because she can do more despair inducing things by leaving Izuru alive than with his corpse. Unlike most examples of this trope, it only serves to show just how twisted Junko really is.

* JerkassHasAPoint: As soul-crushing as it was for [[spoiler: Rafael]], Junko ''does'' make several good points in regards to questioning his motives. She also calls him out [[spoiler: ignoring his sister Sonia in favor of serving Dartz despite Sonia's condition is pretty much living proof that Dartz's words were lies. Suffice to say, Rafal does not take this well ''at all''.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: There is a ''sharp'' tonal difference between [[spoiler:Chapter 61]] and the rest of the fic, where she begins her plans to destroy the world. The author even bumps up the fic's rating to M starting from the Orichalcos arc.
* ManipulativeBitch: This being Junko, you can expect a lot of moments where she shows this:
** She wormed her way into Pegasus's favor by making emotional appeals and doing housework. And occasionally, [[{{Squick}} dressing up as his dead wife]].
** She also worms her way into Yugi's circle of friends by pretending to be a good person all as part of her ploy to corrupt [[spoiler:Yami]] as part of her long-term plans.
** [[spoiler:To say nothing of [[TortureMakesYouEvil what she did to Ishizu]]]].
** Taken to the extreme levels in Chapters 79-80 where she not only [[spoiler: defeats Rafael before the Pharoah can on top of also emotionally and mentally breaking him]], but also initiates a WoundedGazelleGambit to make ''everyone'' think she's the victim among the two duelists. And even when displaying her true persona, it can easily be hand-waved by the Orichalcos corrupting her.
** During chapter 100, she has a long talk with Yami and Yugi about her behavior, but the conversation ends up switching topics to the point that Junko is able to get them to agree that their belief in [[BecauseDestinySaysSo destiny]] isn't all its cracked up to be, citing examples of how to prove that destiny is only what you make it.
* NotMeThisTime: When Téa sees Yami DrunkOnTheDarkSide in chapter 73, she immediately assumes Junko is responsible and slaps her across the face. Junko quickly affirms, with supporting evidence, that, for once, she's not to blame.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Upon meeting up with Matsuda, she ''doesn't'' immediately press her breasts to his back as she usually does [[spoiler: because she now loves Yami instead of him]]. This actually prompts her to get her head examined.
* PoisonousFriend: And very ''very'' subtle about it too. Junko has spent some of her interactions with the Pharaoh trying to guide him in the direction of falling into despair. And his duels with [[DrunkOnTheDarkSide Rafael]] and [[UnstoppableRage Weevil]] aren't helping matters...
* PrecisionFStrike: During her duel with Rafael, she mimics a line from Abridged regarding his use of Dreadscythe and calls him a "Giant ''fucking'' hypocrite".
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers one to Weevil by [[WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries quoting the abridged series]], including a mention of [[JokeCharacter MushroomMan]].
** She also delivers one to Rafael that also doubles as a BreakingSpeech [[spoiler:during their duel]].
** Downplayed during her duel with Zigfried. Junko admits she could be going harder on the German fop, but ultimately cuts herself short because if she went farther, she'd have to out Zigfried for his true colors in front of everyone, which both know would result in Zigfried's immediate DQ. Why Junko didn't do this [[ForTheEvulz when she loves doing it]] remains a mystery.
* ScrewDestiny: It's unknown if this is just how she feels, or if she's just spouting it to further her own ends--this is Junko after all--but she definitely seems to dislike the concept of destiny and fate. Both reasons make sense:
** If she's being genuine, it could stem from how she wants things to be more unpredictable and the idea that events are preordained or unavoidable mock the very basis of her talent and the ability to see infinite possibilities.
** If she's just spouting platitudes, the longer she continues to advocate for this mentality, the easier it becomes for her to manipulate Yugi and Yami [[BecauseDestinySaysSo who are of the latter mentality]].
* StepfordSmiler: Type C, aka "looks nice and friendly on the outside, ''out for blood'' on the inside."
* {{Troll}}: Never more evident than while posing as Monokuma. [[spoiler:She also invokes a case of DidTheyOrDidntThey with Yami until she busts a gut laughing, unable to keep up the facade any longer and comes clean that she was just messing with him]].
* TakeThatKiss: [[spoiler:Junko manipulates Yami into kissing her after he defeats her in a duel while the Seal of Orichalcos is activated. She then invokes this trope by deliberately opening her eyes and making eye contact with Téa, just to irritate the brunette]].
* VillainHasAPoint: Junko's [[spoiler:betrayal of Dartz]] is justified by her by pointing out [[spoiler:If the Seal of Orichalcos is going to take the heroes' souls anyway, she may as well be the one getting the 500 attack point boost]].
** Yami and Yugi also find it difficult to argue with her during some of her speeches of how she views the world in chapter 100.
* VillainousCrush: Develops one on Yugi (both of them) at the tail-end of the Orichalcos arc, much to her surprise.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: Makoto's determination, luck, and optimistic nature catch her eye immediately. The fic also starts when Junko becomes interested in Duel Monsters as a potential way to bring despair.
** She also appears to be quite interested in Yugi Muto.
** In chapter 73, she explicitly refers to Rafael as "Not boring" due to his speeches greatly resembling her own philosophy. [[spoiler:She unfortunately makes good on that interest in chapter 85]].
* WeCanRuleTogether: Once she sets her twisted little black heart on Yugi, she intends to make him her "King of Despair".
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Pulls this in Chapter 79 during her duel against [[spoiler: Rafael, all to garner sympathy from Yami and everyone else present. Suffice to say, it ''works''.]]
* XanatosSpeedChess: Junko is the master of this.
** Her actions in the Orichalcos arc are this. She pretended to join Dartz and then took the Orichalcos seal with her, just so she could spend time among Yugi and his friends, [[BigBadFriend acting as their friend and ally]]. She used this to great advantage so that, ultimately, [[spoiler:Yami would take her soul and Dartz would be gotten out of her way by the good guys, leaving her in the good graces of the protagonists, and able to blame all of her horrible actions on the Orichalcos making her BrainwashedAndCrazy]]. And it ''works''. [[ParanoiaFuel Time will tell how this will pan out in the long run]].
* {{Yandere}}: She becomes this for Yugi. [[spoiler:She only decided to [[FateWorseThanDeath do what she did]] to Vivian Wong after the other girl insisted [[DisproportionateRetribution that she'd make Yugi her boyfriend]].]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: A possible interpretation of her [[spoiler:killing Zigfried so that he couldn't turn on her later]].

* BigSisterInstinct: Referring to Mukuro as an "enabler" to Junko's behavior aside, she at least ''tries'' to be a good big sister to the world's worst little sister alive.
* BroadStrokes: The prologue shows that unlike in canon, she ends up participating in the Killing Game as herself instead of impersonating her sister Junko. However what caused this change and what in entails is still unknown.
* GracefulLoser: Mukuro takes her loss to Makoto with calm acceptance.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She develops a crush on Makoto almost instantly.
* [[MyMasterRightOrWrong My Sister Right Or Wrong]]: Is completely and utterly devoted to supporting her sister, no matter how immoral her ambitions are. Rafael actually calls her out on this mindset of hers at the end of Chapter 73.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: While "nemesis" might not be the proper word for it, Mukuro is certainly this to any would-be opponent of hers. She foregoes the cheesy one-liners and flourishing hand gestures, keeping her body still and speaking rather robotically of abilities activating. Makoto even tells her she can afford to loosen up a little.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mukuro Ikusaba]]
* TheStoic: Mukuro keeps a level head at almost all times and rarely expresses emotion.
* UndyingLoyalty: To her sister Junko.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Poor dear is completely confused by the feelings Makoto stirs in her.

[[folder: Monaca Towa]]
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Like Komaru, Monaca doesn't come into relevance until ''Absolute Despair Girls''. Here she appears (albeit with her name not dropped) throughout the background in the Virtual World arc as a accomplice of Junko's. She's introduced properly as a participant of the Kaiba Corp Grand Prix.

!Rare Hunters

[[folder: Marik Ishtar/Yami Marik]]
* ArcVillain: As in canon, of Battle City. At least until the finals.
* BigBadWannabe: Yami Marik is a far greater threat than him, owing to lack of restraint and utter cruelty. Additionally, Marik gets played by Celeste a few times and never really moves to neutralize her, while Yami Marik has no such mercy and doesn't let her, or anyone, push him around.
* CrazyPrepared: Yami Marik packed a Dimensional Wall trap ''just in case'' someone turned Ra against him, which he promptly puts to use when Sonia does. While Traps do not normally work on the Egyptian God Cards, his Trap in particular disregards that as it affects the ''player'' instead. Cure ''massive'' amounts of OhCrap from everyone else.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Marik goes over it after Junko tortures Ishizu into becoming a Remnant, reveals Ishizu murdered Odion, and forcing him to watch a video of her enjoying despair. It completely ''shatters'' his mind, allowing his dark side (now going by Melvin) to take over.]]
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: [[spoiler: Just as it seems like he's on the road towards atonement; Junko ends up capturing him and and his siblings upon their return to Egypt. And in his case; Junko pushes him to the brink despair by torturing Ishizu into despair, and forcing him to watch a video of his sister murdering Odion, as well as her enjoying despair resulting in him being mentally broken and his dark side to re-emerge.]]
* JekyllAndHyde: Yami Marik is his repressed side, full of anger, darkness, and hate, who takes over after Odion's defeat.
* LackOfEmpathy: Yami Marik. He doesn't care at all about potentially losing his own memories in his Shadow Duel with Sonia, only shrugging and saying he never cared for his Rare Hunters anyway.
* LargeHam: Both of them are very theatrical.
* MoralityPet: His adoptive brother Odion, of course, but Odion also suspects that he cares for Celeste more than he shows.
* OhCrap: Has this reaction when Sonia reveals that she can ''read'' Ancient Egyptian. Unfortunately it amounts to nothing, see CrazyPrepared above.
* PeoplePuppets: He uses his Millenium Rod to mind-control his minions, or anyone he captures.
* PetTheDog: Strangely enough, Yami Marik does this in two occassions, albeit both times are immediately negated by his villainous words afterwards.
** In Chapter 32, he complies with everyone's demands and releases Mahiru from the Shadow Realm but warning everyone that this will be his ''only'' shred of mercy.
** In Chapter 50 he allows Mikan to tend to his wounds caused from his battle with Gundham. Afterwards he thanks her and promises to destroy her last when he plunges the world into the shadows.
* SmugSnake: Both Marik and his dark half are perpetually cocky in their ability to win.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler: Yami Marik. Instead of being destroyed after his final Shadow game in the Battle City finals, he was only banished within Marik's mind as seen when he re-emerges after Junko mentally breaks Marik in Chapter 61.]]
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: As in canon, Dark Marik takes over after Odion is knocked out of the finals. [[spoiler:And then again after Battle City, thanks to Junko.]]
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Yami Marik, as per canon.
* UnholyMatrimony: Celeste extends him this offer, and he actually takes her up on it. [[spoiler:Until she loses to Yugi, but he just drops the deal instead of going [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness the other route]].]]
* YankTheDogsChain: [[spoiler:The three Ishtar siblings return home at the end of Battle City, hoping to restart anew, only to be kidnapped by Junko. Ishizu is tortured into despair, Marik supplanted by his SuperpoweredEvilSide, and Odion killed.]]

!Noah Kaiba, his Associates and other Virtual World Residents

[[folder: Noah Kaiba]]
* CruelToBeKind: [[spoiler:This is the reason he kept raising the prices Sweet Orchard had to collect to bring Miho back--because he knew the AwfulTruth that neither he nor Miho could leave, and wanted to protect her from finding it out.]]
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: It's heavily implied that, like [[spoiler:Miho]], he's been going insane from being trapped in the virtual world for too long.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Has his at the end of Chapter 48, after seeing that Gozuburo's true colors and a ''lot'' of patience from Makoto and Miho.]]
* HonorBeforeReason:
** When the virtual world arc starts, he only targets those who are actually ''able'' to duel, allowing the injured to stay behind with their nurse. He was also right about to lampast Johnson for cheating in his duel [[spoiler:before Celeste's luck kicked in and turned it around.]]
** He also refuses to give anyone access to [[spoiler:Hajime's body]], saying he'll honor the deal he made with [[spoiler:the Steering Committee.]]
** Subverted hard in Chapter 48, where he tosses aside honor and morals in his duels.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He looks down on Johnson cheating against Celeste, but has no problem doing the exact same thing against Kaiba.
* KickTheDog:
** As in canon, he uses Mokuba as a human shield against Kaiba and then turns them to stone right as they were about to reunite.
** During his duel with [[spoiler:Makoto]], Noah decides to start turning his friends to stone for every turn [[spoiler:Makoto]] fails to defeat him. He does this for no reason other than to be a dick, with the crowner being [[spoiler:turning Makoto's ''sister'' to stone]] and then mocking him.
* KickTheMoralityPet: In an interesting way. [[spoiler:He's been raising the money Sayaka's group has to pay to bring Miho back...because he doesn't want to lose her. While sweet, it's ignoring Miho's own wishes, and contributed to her thought that people have forgotten about her.]] Makoto even comments it's the exact logic of a spoiled kid--not inherently malicious, but still hurtful.
* PetTheDog:
** To [[spoiler:Miho]] in general. [[spoiler:He's furious when he thinks the Big Five might go after her and is completely sincere when he apologizes for lying to her, stating he was trying to protect her from the AwfulTruth.]]
* PsychopathicManChild: Tends to rapidly switch between mockery and throwing tantrums. To be fair, he never actually got the chance to grow up, and might [[GoMadFromTheIsolation actually be insane]].
* SpoiledBrat: Literally whines that he's entitled to [=KaibaCorp=] and shouldn't have to work hard for it.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In canon, he sacrifices himself to stop Gozaburo and the both of them perish alongside his Virtual World. Here, his data gets salvaged by Chihiro and placed onto his laptop.
* UngratefulBastard: [[spoiler:In the face of Makoto extending the hand of forgiveness, what does Noah do? Try to steal his body. Fortunately Kaiba stops and punches him in the face.]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:He straight up ''deletes'' the Big Five, Hobson, Kemo and Emma from existence after Leichter fails to defeat Kaiba, claiming that once Izuru is created he'll just make a deal with the Steering Committee to borrow him for his company which is actually ''lot'' earlier than when he does it to the Big Five in canon.]]

[[folder: The Big Five]]

* AdaptationalWimp: In canon he proved himself to be quite the forminable opponent against the inexperienced Tea.

!Leichter
* KilledOffScreen: Like Gansley, his duel with Kaiba happens off-screen, though he at least gets to show up.

[[folder: Other Associates]]

!Kemo
* ALoadOfBull: Assumes the form of Minoan Centaur.
* WeHardlyKnewYou: Is defeated by Nagito and digitized into cyberspace not long after his (re)introduction.

!Emma
Crump's niece and former head programmer of [=KaibaCorp=]. An original character made for the fanfic. As Johnson ends up dueling Celeste instead of Joey, she becomes Joey's opponent.
----
* {{Greed}}: Her fatal flaw in that by cutting safety corners to make a profit, Kaiba fired her after she almost set him on fire. This also plays into her gameplay style in that she'll make any sacrifice, including her own life points, to gain any sort of advantage. And, as lampshaded by Celeste, this leads to her defeat.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Cut safety corners to make more money and nearly set Kaiba and Mokuba on fire. Kaiba promptly fired her for her actions.
* MagicalGirl: Her deck revolves entirely around spellcasters, including the fruit-based magician girls. Her deck master is even Chocolate Magician Girl.
* UnwittingPawn: Her entire role is this as she wasn't even originally involved in the arc until [[spoiler:Monaca Towa]] tipped her off about the situation. [[spoiler:Monaca then sabotaged her virtual reality pod and used Emma's duel with Joey to help improve Junko's dueling skills]].
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Duels one duel against Joey and loses before she's digitized into cyberspace. Noteworthy in that, unlike the only other original character in the series, Eliza se Arc, Emma probably isn't coming back.

!Hobson
* SuperpowerLottery: Out of the deckmaster abilities presented in the story, his is arguably ''the'' most broken out of all of them outside of Noah's Shinato. His Witty Phantom's deckmaster ability allows him to once per turn, look at this opponent's hand. He then has the option to take one card from their hand and force them to discard another.

[[folder: Gozaburo Kaiba]]
* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:Since the missile strike is completely omitted in this story and his defeat from Kaiba's hands happens off-screen; it is unknown what happened to Gozaburo at the end of the Virtual World Arc if he simply defeated or had his mind deleted.]]
* ArchNemesisDad: To Kaiba as per canon.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: See OffingTheOffspring below. He regards Byakuya's suggestion as "disgusting".
* KilledOffscreen: His defeat by Seto's hands goes entirely off-screen (save for a brief cameo) to pave more focus to Chiaki's Hajime-rescue storyline.
* OffingTheOffspring: Byakuya theorizes that this is what he did to Noah, knowing full well the kind of man Gozaburo was back in the real world (a theory that horrifies everyone, including Kaiba). Gozaburo however proclaims that despite that Noah was a spoiled brat, he would never actually plot to get rid of him. However he ''does'' admit that Noah's accident was indeed convenient for him as it got an incompetent heir out of his way and made way for a more worthy one in Seto.

[[folder: Dartz]]
* ArcVillain: For the Orichalcos arc.
* BadassInANiceSuit: How he's dressed when he's not inside his temple, but rather living daily, modern-day life.
* DealWithTheDevil: Has dragged [[spoiler:Natsumi, Nagito, Hiyoko and Gundham]] to his side in this manner, preying upon their weaknesses and offering them power in exchange for helping him {{Take Over the World}}. And of course there's the matter of him making a pact with the Orichalcos himself.
* KilledOffForReal: As per canon, he and Leviathan are stopped permanently at the end of the Orichalcos arc.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:In chapter 78, he lets Hiyoko know that she was nothing more than a disposable pawn to him, no matter how nice to her he was. And this is ''[[KickTheDog right before]]'' [[KickTheDog she's about to lose her soul]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Alister]]
* BareYourMidriff: As per canon.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Rafael Nevermind]]
* AloofBigBrother: To Sonia, considering she's on the opposing side and yet Rafael himself refuses to reach out to her despite the supposed death of his family being what led to his DespairEventHorizon in the first place. Junko naturally has a ''field day'' calling him out on his aloofness.
* AntiVillain: Like in canon, he joins Dartz's cause because he genuinely believes he can restore the world to a purer state. [[spoiler:Might be dropping the "anti" part now that Junko has a hold of him]].
* HappyEndingOverride: Like with the Ishtar siblings, [[spoiler:just as it looks like he's going to be able to settle back down with his family, Junko ruins that idea]].
* GuardianEntity: Plays a Guardian deck.
* PetTheDog: Despite refusing to return with Sonia to Novoselic and being on opposing sides against her; Rafael still tucks her away in a safe location in the midst of his escape.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: In this story, he is a thought-to-be deceased member of the Novoselic Royal Family and is Sonia's older brother.
* SchmuckBait: Like in canon, he uses the Exchange Spell to forcefully give Yami the Seal of Orichalcos as part of his gambit to expose his true nature while also taking his soul.
* TakingTheBullet: Will willingly go out of his way to protect his monsters from destruction, even at the cost of his other cards or his own LP.
* TheRival: Towards Yugi/Yami during the Orichalcos arc, as per canon. [[spoiler:At least until Junko messes with that idea]].
* TheWorfEffect: In the Kaiba Corp Grand Prix, his involvement in the tournament seems to be for no other reason than to [[spoiler:show off how good of a duelist Leon is]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Valon]]
* AdaptationNameChange: This fic gives him the surname of "Hall".
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Implied after being beaten by Mai in chapter 75.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When it is clear that Joey and Mai have the upper hand against him and Natsumi during their tag duel in Chapter 71 with no way for either of them to make a comeback; he decides to use his emergency fail-safe option to break the Seal of Orichalcos mid-duel, letting him and Natsumi make a run for it.
* PetTheDog: His concern for Natsumi's well-being, as shown in Chapters 70-71.
* PoweredArmor: His Armor deck.
* TheRival: Due to Mai not pulling her FaceHeelTurn from canon in this fic, Valon becomes this for her. He's also still this for Joey to some minor extent as per canon.
* ShipTease: Tries to invoke this Mai as per canon. Unlike in canon however, Mai chooses to have none of it and thus antagonizes him every chance she gets.
** To a lesser extent with Natsumi, as seen from their interactions in Chapters 70-71 and how Valon seemed genuinely concerned about her well-being.
* WeakButSkilled: His Armor monsters tend to have 0 ATK and DEF points, but more than make up for it by having devastating and potent effects that can easily overwhelm the opponent.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Gurimo]]
* AdaptationalBadass: In canon, his only on-screen duel was against the Pharoah and was thus soundly defeated by him. Here, we see him winning a duel on-screen against Fuyuhiko and Peko showcasing a much stronger deck featuring the Wicked Eraser.
* SmugSnake: He spends his duels with Fuyuhiko, Peko, and Chisa taunting about how their defeat is inevitable. [[spoiler:Unfortunately for him, Chisa isn't having none of that.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He goes after Chisa because he thinks she's nothing more than a silly teacher. [[spoiler:He is incredibly wrong and loses for it.]]
* WeHardlyKnewYe: This guy is taken out of the arc literally the chapter after he's introduced.

!Junko Enoshima and her Associates

[[folder: Junko Enoshima]]
* AlphaBitch: ''Is she ever''. She's gorgeous, popular, and a highly-respected gyaru in society. She's also ''evil to the core''.
* AscendedExtra: She initially appears in only a minor role during the Battle City arc, only to take a more active involvement in the story by that arc's conclusion, starting with [[spoiler: torturing Ishizu into a remnant of Despair, killing Odion, and breaking Marik back into his SuperpoweredEvilSide.]]
* BerserkButton: Doesn't like it when she doesn't get her desired Despair. [[HopeBringer Makoto]] taking his defeat against Yugi in Battle City in stride leaves her screaming into a pillow.
* BigBadFriend: This seems to be Junko's intentions for the moment as she has spent her screen time amongst Yugi and his friends very benign and rather helpful. [[ParanoiaFuel Gird your loins]].
* BlackComedy: A good number of her quips and antics give off this vibe. Comedic in that they can be hilarious, black for the fact that well...it's freaking ''Junko'' we are talking about here.
* BreakThemByTalking: A favorite tactic of hers, especially in this fic. She uses this to [[spoiler:[[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwash Ishizu]]]], give Rafael a ReasonYouSuckSpeech, and get under Kaiba's skin by pointing out that he and Joey [[NotSoDifferent aren't so different]] despite Kaiba's hostility towards Joey.
* CastingAShadow[=/=]DarkIsEvil: In Duel Monsters, a majority of her monsters are DARK-Attribute and are mainly Fiend-Typed, reflecting her true demonic nature.
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler:Inflicts this on poor Ishizu.]]
* TheCorrupter: [[spoiler:She tortures, through various means, Ishizu into becoming a Remnant, and then reveals this to Marik to [[DespairEventHorizon push him off the edge]].]]
* DidntSeeThatComing: [[spoiler: As she and Matsuda discover, Junko genuinely fell in love with Yami during the Orichalcos arc. This (and her subsequent lack of usual responses to Matsuda) legitimately caught her off-guard.]]
* DomesticAbuse: Physically and emotionally horrible to her sister.
* EngineeredPublicConfession: Pulls one of these on [[spoiler: Rafael]] in Chapter 79, recording his direct threat on her as part of her ploy to slander him in everyone's eyes.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Unfortunately, the more Junko loves someone, the more she wants to see them suffer despair at her own two hands. If she's in love with someone they need to run and get as far away from her as possible.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: During Chapter 73, when Yami reveals that Yugi offered his soul to the Orichalcos in his place, Junko actually feels confused if not outright distraught of why someone like Yugi would do such a thing.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Junko finds out that her messing around with the Orichalcos magic caused her fabricated crush on Yugi and the Pharaoh to turn real, a realization that comes as a surprise to both her and her now ex-boyfriend Yasuke Matsuda.
* ExactWords: During the duel with Seto Kaiba in Noah's virtual world arc, disguised as Monokuma, Junko promises to tell Kaiba where she sent Mokuba to if he won. Come the duel's end, [[ForegoneConclusion and Kaiba's victory]], Kaiba demands to know where Mokuba is, but Junko remarks that she only promised to tell Kaiba where he is, but never specified she would say how to get there. Kaiba [[HeroicSafeMode was not amused]].
* FemmeFatale: Implied, what with dressing up like Pegasus's deceased wife to get in his good books. Outright confirmed in her interactions with Yami where she's not above applying her charms to mess around with his mind.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Junko is not the starring villain of Battle City, Virtual World, or Orichalcos arcs, but any Danganronpa fan knows this twisted little psychopath is cooking ''something'' up.
* HoneyTrap: In addition to crushing Yami's psyche and making him more prone to despair, Junko also seems to be keen on seducing him or Yugi to snatch them from under Tea's nose. See TakeThatKiss below.
* HopeCrusher: Junko loves despair to fetish levels, and loves nothing more than spreading it. A particular favorite is winning or watching someone win right when their opponent thought they had it in the bag.
-->'''Junko:''' I want to see that raw determination you showed Crowler...just so I can knock it down.
* InsistentTerminology: When Kaiba likens Monokuma to a four-year-old's interpretation of a panda, Junko, as Monokuma, corrects him in that it's a 10-year-old's interpretation, likely referring to how Monokuma was made by Monaca Towa.
* NotMeThisTime: When Tea sees Yami DrunkOnTheDarkSide in chapter 73, she immediately assumes Junko is responsible and slaps her across the face.
She then invokes this trope by deliberately opening her eyes and making eye contact with Tea, just to irritate the brunette]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mukuro Ikusaba]]
* {{Adorkable}}: Just watch her try to work out her feelings over Makoto.
* TheStoic: Mukuro keeps a level head at almost all times and rarely expresses emotion.
* UndyingLoyalty: To her sister Junko.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Poor dear is completely confused by the feelings Makoto stirs in her.
