* SmartPeoplePlayChess: In "The Talons of Weng-Chiang", Magnus Greel and Four casually shuffle around chess pieces while Greel delivers his evil speech. Four wins, of course. This later gets turned on its head in "The Sun Makers" when the Doctor tries playing chess with [=K9=]; the Doctor quickly arrives at what he believes to be victory and walks off, gloating about his genius, only for [=K9=] to quickly whip around and put the Doctor's king into check, leaving the Doctor bewildered that a robot dog could be smarter than him.

* ThinkingTic: When trying to concentrate or when lost in thought, he'll often run his fingers through his hair or stroke his nose. This gets ribbed at in "Castrovalva", where the newly-regenerated Fifth Doctor attempts to run his hands through his own hair while thinking, only to disappointedly discover that it's much shorter and straighter now.

* ArchEnemy: The Fourth Doctor's era marked a shift in how the show approached recurring villains, in that their appearances became much less frequent in favor of newer, one-off foes (the Daleks alone only appeared once for each of Four's successors in the Classic Series, and he only faced them twice in his era). However, the one villain he faced the most in the TV series was the Master(specifically the incarnation portrayed by Peter Pratt and Geoffrey Beevers, though his final serial had him fight the one played by Creator/AnthonyAinley), doing battle with him three times over the course of seven years and regenerating because of him.

Fixed the opening line to be the actual first words out of Tom Baker's mouth from "Robot", bar one I couldn't make out while Nic Courtney is talking.

Indexes aren't tropes

* MurderTropes: Four was more willing than most regenerations to commit murder, and didn't mind turning a blind eye to Leela's killings. At one point, he murders a villain by filling the room with deadly chemicals; later on, he kills a guy by strapping a bomb to his chest and merrily laughing when he blows up (though the man in question was an immoral monster who had it coming). "Genesis of the Daleks" has the Doctor trying to decide whether or not he has the right to commit genocide; he only refuses once he realizes more planets have united hands in peace because of the Dalek threat. (Also, spending a few minutes with Davros clearly rattled him.)

Added DiffLines:

* CasualDangerDialogue: Four loves this trope. Whenever threatened, captured or otherwise confronted by any kind of sentient menace, his first instinct is to smile and try to make small talk with them.
