Entities of the Mythos who oppose the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods. They are not particularly well defined by Lovecraft himself (as he only ever wrote two of them; Nodens and Hypnos, and the latter is a confusing case of TheGhost suffering under UnreliableNarrator), though later writers would establish them as a pantheon of entities who are mortal enemies with the Great Old Ones. Though prone to BlueAndOrangeMorality as much as any EldritchAbomination in this page, they can be considered "helpful" to humanity in that they oppose Old Ones, whose mere presence can spread madness and whose servants tend to actively incite said abominations.

Oddly enough, the descendants of the Great Cthulhu. An ancient civilization of SufficientlyAdvancedAliens who flew in to colonize the Earth many millions of years ago. Unfortunately, it has already been occupied by another interstellar civilization of the Elder Things. After a long and epic confrontation, the spawn of Cthulhu managed to stake out a land mass in the Pacific Ocean, where the city of R'lyeh was built. There they lived for an indefinitely long period, until the stars changed their position, and the entire population of the city fell into a planned hibernation, in their language called fhtagn. Some time later, as a result of geological processes, R'lyeh sank and sank to the bottom of the ocean, where it remains to the present, only occasionally rising for a short time due to perturbations of Earth's crust.

* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Downplayed. It had been noted at least by Lovecraftian cosmic horror standards the Elder Things had moralities and mentalities which, while still alien, most resembles that of Humans. Dyers noted many of their behaviours and actions were not only still comprehensible to humans but uncannily resemble them, leading him to remark that despite their differences fundamentally the two races [[NotSoDifferentRemark were not so different]] to each other.
--> '''Dyers:''' ''"They were the men of another age and another order of being [...] They had not been even savages--for what indeed had they done? [...] God, what intelligence and persistence! What a facing of the incredible, just as those carven kinsmen and forbears had faced things only a little less incredible! Radiates, vegetables, monstrosities, star spawn--whatever they had been, they were men!"''

* FreakOut: The Elder Things who were thawed out by the 1931 expedition are implied to have experienced one upon waking up in an unfamiliar time surrounded by unfamiliar creatures, leading to them slaughtering the humans and dogs who dug them up in a frenzy before calming down. Dyers noted it's an understandable reaction especially when considering the dogs were instinctively hostile to them and the humans were dissecting a few who may or may not actually be still alive.

In conflicts with other races and civilizations, what they lacked in physical or martial prowess, they made up with advanced technological weaponry as well as transdimensional sorceries. Even the last few survivors of their race, waking up in an unfamiliar time surrounded by monstrous creatures after aeons of hibernation, took time to study the humans and dogs whom they slaughtered upon awakening after they stopped freaking out and assessed their situation more rationally.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: The Elder Things who slaughtered the members of the 1931 expedition who dug them up were implied to be acting partly on this, as the Humans were dissecting several of their members who may or may not had been still alive if unawakened.

* CommieLand: From what little Dyers could tell based on their engravings, the Elder Things were pretty socialistic in terms of how they organised their society. Helps that they were an enlightened race which due to having NoBiologicalSex have no real distinctions between individuals, which may had shielded them from some of the pratfalls of socialism or necessitated it.

* NeglectfulPrecursors: They didn't really give a damn about the life on Earth which they accidentally spawned as a result of their experiments, which may or may not proved to be both a bad and good thing for primitive humanity when they showed up.

Added DiffLines:

* WeWillUseManualLaborInTheFuture: Elder Things don't need much in vehicles due to their ability to fly anywhere they like, but when they needed to carry heavy loads they are noted to still use beasts of burden, including to quote Dyers ''"a curious variety of primitive vertebrates"'' at least on land. They also created the Shoggoths as a SlaveRace to do all their manual work, although this would [[TurnedAgainstTheirMasters bite them in the tentacles]] later on.

* GodzillaThreshold: At least in some versions/adaptations of "At the Mountains of Madness", the Elder Things contacted the feared Outer Gods in desperation to defeat Cthulhu and his Star Spawns during their war against them, sinking Ry'leh and causing the stars to become 'wrong' to force them into deathless hibernation.

* NuclearOption: When the Shoggoths first revolted, they resorted to nuclear weapons to quell them. It is unknown whether they used them to stop the second great revolt, but if they did it didn't work.
