The protagonist of the series. Descended Charlie was once and ordinary underachieving boy who one day discovers that he has magical abilities, referred to as an endownment. * ArchEnemy: The closest he has to one is Manfred, with the two having the most personal antagonism towards each other out of all the good and evil endowned. While Ezekiel is the BigBad, it is Manfred who primarily crosses paths with Charlie and is the one who does most of the dirty work. Both also deeply hate each other, with Charlie for all the awful things Manfred has done to him and his friends, while Manfred despises Charlie for resisting his hypnotism and later proving to be a constant thorn in his side.

A friend of Charlie's who is in the Music Department. He is a musical prodigy and is always eager to help Charlie and the endowed children foil the Bloors' evil plans.
* AffectionateNickname: Olivia bestows him with the name of Fido, deeming Fidelio to be too long. Fidelio points out that that's a dog name, but says that he'll think about it.
* BadassFamily: They're armed with nothing but musical instruments and their guts, but his family valiantly (if futilely) attempts to defend Billy from any threats when they're housing him.

* CheerfulChild: Fidelio is always cheerful, and walks with an excited swagger most of the time.
* ChildProdigy: He's noted by his mother to be especially gifted, even by the standards of their family.
* TheConfidant: While there are times when he's last to be included in the loop, thanks to being unendowed, he's also often the first person Charlie entrusts with secrets, thanks to being one of his best friends and easily accessible (being in the same department and his roommate).
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: His family, including his parents, comes to ten, and that's not including their deaf cat.
* MuggleBestFriend: To Charlie.
* NervesOfSteel: Charlie comments that Fidelio is a good friend to have around when there's danger, because he never panics and always has an idea of what to do.

[[folder: Charlie Bone]]
!! Charlie Bone
The protagonist of the series. Descended from Amoret, the Red King's youngest child, Charlie can hear and travel into photos and paintings.
* BookDumb: Charlie isn't exceptionally smart when it comes to academics. He's not completely dumb, though, either.
* ABoyAndHisX: A Boy and his Wand. Charlie inherits the wand he stole from Skarpo, and develops a close bond with her.
* TheCameo: Makes a surprise appearance in ''The Secret Kingdom'' and later ''Leopard's Gold''.
* CheerfulChild: Nothing ever seems to get him down.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Like his father, he can't stand by and watch bad things happen to other people.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Has brown hair and brown eyes.
* DeadpanSnarker: Charlie has a smidgen of this at times, especially when talking about his grandmother, the Yewbeams, and the Bloors.
* {{Determinator}}: He is determined to foil the Bloors' plans and find his father, who he believes is still alive.
** He is very determined to rescue Billy from Count Harken's castle after Billy is pulled into the painting, even when Billy doesn't want to be rescued. He is also determined to see Matilda again, as he's developed a crush on her, and resolves to bring her back with him to the city somehow. However Matilda flat-out refuses to return with him, because she knows it's not her fate to do so.
** Despite everything that happens, nothing can stop Charlie from searching for his father and undoing the Bloors’ evil work.
* DisappearedDad: Charlie's father died when Charlie was two years old. [[spoiler: Or so they think. He's really in a deep hypnotic trance and trapped in Bloor's Academy]].
* FamousAncestor: He is descended from the Red King, an African magician who came out of Africa centuries ago accompanied by three leopards. He's also descended from the Welsh wizard Mathonwy, who was a great friend of the king.
* FireForgedFriends: With most of the good endowed. Particularly Emma Tolly, who he, Fidelio, Olivia and Benjamin awaken from her trance in ''Midnight for Charlie Bone''. Though it takes her a while to become friendly with them even after that, and they only become firm friends after the events of ''Time Twister''.
** Becomes friends with Gabriel, Tancred and Lysander after the trio save him from Zelda, Manfred and Asa during the Ruin Game.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: In ''Blue Boa'' Charlie becomes a pariah within the school for one day because of Skarpo's causing mayhem with his magic, as everyone knows that it was Charlie who released him out of his painting. A similar incident happens in the fifth book, with most students in the school becoming angry with Charlie because he managed to return his friends' pets and not anyone else's, and won't reveal where the rest of the animals are.
* HotBlooded: Charlie tends to act before he thinks, and this gets him into hot water quite a few times.
* HumbleHero: Is very humble, largely because of his grandmother and great-aunts' influence.
* IAmWho: Charlie is surprised to find that he is descended from Mathonwy through his mother's family, and thus is the rightful owner of the wand Claerwen.
* IChooseToStay: Even after being lost in the ruin at the end of the first book, Charlie chooses to stay at Bloor's to help the good endowed children of the Red King fight against the bad guys.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Is close friends with Cook (aka Treasure), his uncle Paton, the Onimouses and Mrs Kettle of Piminy Street. He is also acquainted with Alice Angel, who is Olivia's godmother. [[spoiler: He also ends up having a sort-of friendship with the Red King, who he visits multiple times within the Red King's human lifetime.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Charlie frequently wishes to be normal, particularly when he first discovers his endowment and goes to Bloor's. He gets over it by the fifth book.
* INeverToldYouMyName: Says this to Alice Angel after he realizes that she knew his name.
* ItsAllMyFault: Charlie blames himself for [[spoiler: Tancred's drowning]] in ''Shadow of Badlock'', as it was because of Charlie that [[spoiler: Tancred]] had met with Dagbert to trade for Charlie's moth.
* JawDrop: Charlie seems to do this often when he is surprised at something. Most notably when [[spoiler: Miss Chrystal is found to be an evil witch]].
* KidHero: Charlie is only ten years old when the series begins, and is twelve when it ends.
%%* LikeParentLikeChild: His mother sometimes comments on how much like his father he is.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler: Mr Pilgrim is Charlie's father]].
* MagicWand: Charlie inherits one from his ancestor Mathonwy, though it can only be used by one of his bloodline speaking in Welsh. Later on after Manfred tries to destroy it, it becomes a white moth.
%%* TheMatchmaker: Charlie
* MessyHair: Charlie's hair is described as being like a hedge.
* MixedAncestry: He's a descendant of both the Red King and Mathonwy, and has inherited magic from both. He's also revealed to be part-Irish in ''Red Knight''.
* MundaneUtility: Charlie uses his wand to help him remember things he's studied for school.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Charlie's reaction after realising that Tancred has been drowned by Dagbert Endless, mainly because Tancred had been trying to get Charlie's moth back from Dagbert when it happened, as a favour to Charlie.
* NiceGuy: Is generally a nice person.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In ''Blue Boa'' Charlie goes into Skarpo's painting to find a cure for Paton's mystery illness, and ends up bringing the magician back into the modern world by accident. This leads to Skarpo causing magical mayhem throughout the entire city.
%%** In ''Shadow'' Tancred's agreeing to trade for Charlie's moth
* NonActionGuy: Is mainly this, as his size makes it difficult for him to win physical fights easily. His endowment isn't the sort that could be used in a battle, either. In the final battle, Charlie doesn't do anything, instead watching as his friends and family fight against the enchanter's army. His only contribution is distracting the Green Knight during the duel, long enough for the Red Knight to plunge the unbeatable sword into Harken's heart.
* ParentalSubstitute: Paton to Charlie, though Paton doesn't actually act as a parent but more as a supportive uncle.
* PintSizedKid: Charlie is frequently described as being smaller than most kids his age. In fact, he is forced to sit in the very front row at assembly with Billy Raven because of his short height.
* PortalPicture: Charlie's endowment, though it first manifests as simply hearing voices in the pictures.
* ProtagonistTitle: All books in the series have a title that includes Charlie's name.
%%* RebelliousSpirit
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Charlie seems to have this mindset during the entire series. Three guesses where he gets it from...
* SecretLegacy: [[spoiler: Charlie is the rightful owner of the wand Claerwen, as he is a descendant of Mathonwy through his mother]].
* SmarterThanYouLook: Charlie is so small that people tend to overlook him and consider him insignificant. Though he is impulsive and average in academics, he does have a thinking mind, and comes up with a lot of the plans which are put into action in the books.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: To Henry Yewbeam, his great-great uncle.
* TinySchoolBoy: Charlie is very short for his age, something which he hates. Because of this he has to sit in the front row in Assembly, right next to little Billy Raven. By ''Wilderness Wolf'' he is of medium height, however.
* TooDumbToLive: Played with. Charlie can get himself into a lot of sticky situations because of his impulsiveness, but he always manages to figure his way out of them with some help from his friends.
* TookALevelInBadass: Charlie discovers his endowment in the first book, when he finds himself hearing voices from photographs. This eventually leads to him gaining the ability to travel into photos and paintings, an ability he uses only sparingly, and only when he really needs to. He ends up using his endowment to help rescue Henry Yewbeam in book 2, cure Paton of his mysterious illness (and Olly of invisibility) in book 3, and rescue Otus Yewbeam in book 7 and reunite him with his wife in the Castle of Mirrors. Charlie also becomes the rightful owner of the wand Claerwen in the third book, allowing Charlie access to powerful magic which he can use to help himself and others.
* TrueCompanions: Varies as the series progresses. At the beginning of ''Midnight for Charlie Bone'', he is this with Benjamin Brown, his best friend. Later in the book, however, after Charlie meets Fidelio and Olivia their group quickly widens to include them as well. After the events of Charlie Bone and the Time Twister, Lysander and Tancred join the TrueCompanions and in ''Charlie Bone and the Blue Boa'' Emma Tolly becomes a permanent member as well. Much later in ''Charlie Bone and the Red Knight'' Dagbert Endless becomes part of the TrueCompanions.
** Charlie can always depend of Cook on anything, from helping foil Ezekiel Bloor's plans to getting him out of whatever scrape he accidentally got himself into.
** Charlie is also this with his uncle Paton, starting from the end of ''Time Twister''.
* TurnOutLikeHisFather: The Yewbeams constantly fear that he will 'go astray' like his father.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: To his great-great-uncle Henry Yewbeam. Everyone is surprised how much he resembles him.
* UnwittingPawn: The Count uses Charlie to get back into the city, by hitching a ride on Rembrandt as a fly when Charlie is rescuing Billy and Rembrandt from Badlock using the Mirror of Amoret. Charlie has no clue about this until Harken is heard changing back into his human form.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Cook says this to Charlie when he says that he'll never believe his father didn't care about him or the city. Charlie is rather surprised and pleased to hear it.

[[folder: Emma Tolly]]
!! Emma Tolly
Emma can fly. Her surname derives from the Spanish swordsman from Toledo whose daughter married the Red King. She is possibly descended from Tolemeo.
%%* ActionHero
* AdultFear: She was given away by her own father when she was just a baby, but during the transaction she was put into a deep trance that lasted for eight years. The Bloors gave her a new name and sent her to live with foster parents who neglected her emotionally.
* BigDamnHeroes: Emma and Olivia rescue Charlie from Dorcas, the twins, and Joshua Tilpin in book five.
* {{Brainwashed}}: Manfred Bloor hypnotized Emma when she was just two years old; it lasts until she is ten when Charlie and his friends manage to wake her up using Tolly Twelve Bells.
* BreakTheCutie: Manfred intends to do this to her when he imprisons her in the attic at Bloor's Academy near the end of ''Midnight for Charlie Bone''. Luckily Emma manages to escape by herself before it can happen.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Tancred.
* TheCutie: Emma is described by Tancred as quite attractive in the final book.
* DamselOutOfDistress: After being captured by the Bloors in ''Midnight for Charlie Bone'', Emma immediately sets her mind to trying to escape her predicament. She eventually does escape, after she discovers her endowment of flight and how to control it.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Emma's mother died when Emma was very young. Because her father didn't think he'd be a good father to her (and her aunt claimed that she wouldn't be able to look after Emma properly), he decided to give her away to his old friend Harold Bloor and his family (in exchange for the challenge of animating a statue of the Knight of Toledo), believing that Emma would be happier there as Bloor had a whole family unit. Bloor even assured him that Emma would be safe and properly cared for in a loving family if Mostyn gave her to him to adopt. However, when the time came for the swap everything went wrong, and Emma was put into a permanent trance-like state which lasted until she was ten years old. She forgot everything about her past life and true identity. Though she attended Bloor's Academy, she was sent to be fostered by the Moons, a couple paid off by the Bloors, and had a pretty loveless and unhappy childhood there. She only becomes truly happy when she is freed from her trance and looked after by Miss Ingledew, her aunt.
* {{Determinator}}: Emma Tolly seems to be much more persevering than Emilia Moon. She manages to escape from Bloor's in the first book by herself, and continuously strives to rescue Ollie Sparks from invisibility and captivity in Bloor's Academy in the third book.
%%* FireForgedFriends
* FosterKid: Emilia is fostered by the Moons, a couple paid off by the Bloors.
* GirlishPigtails: Emma usually wears her blonde hair in two pigtails.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Emma has blonde hair, and is one of the nicest characters present in the books.
* HappilyAdopted: By her aunt, Julia Ingledew, at the end of ''Midnight for Charlie Bone''.
* HeartwarmingOrphan: She has a very innocent and sweet personality, and is an orphan.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Olivia.
* IChooseToStay: Though Emma tells her aunt she isn't coming back to Bloor's, in the end she decides to stay there to help the good children of the Red King.
* IdentityAmnesia: During her trance Emma has no idea who she really is.
%%* InnocentBlueEyes
* ItsAllMyFault: Emma blames herself for Miss Ingledew almost dying when she puts on the enchanted belt, because Emma left it alone at one point and allowed Dorcas to get to it.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: The hypnosis causes Emma to forget who she really is.
* MuggleFosterParents: Emilia's foster parents are an unendowed couple paid by the Bloors to look after her.
* NiceGirl: She is one of the kindest characters in the series.
* ParentalAbandonment: Emma's dad, Mostyn Tolly, traded her to the Bloors for a replica of the Toledo knight when she was a baby. He eventually tries to put this right, but is murdered before he can.
** Emma's mother died of an illness when Emma was two years old, just days before Dr. Tolly chose to give Emma away.
* PluckyGirl: Emma is a very persevering person, as she mentions in ''Midnight for Charlie Bone''.
* SecretKeeper: Is one of the few people who know about Olivia's endowment.
* ShapeShifter: Emma can fly by becoming a bird.
* SilkHidingSteel: Emma is pretty and very innocent-looking and sweet. Underneath all that, however, she is also very persevering with a surprising inner strength.
* SmarterThanYouLook: In ''Castle of Mirrors'', Emma refuses to be taken in by Joshua's magnetism, and even Charlie comments that she is stronger than she looks.
* StartingANewLife: After escaping Bloor's Academy, Emma makes her way to Ingledew's Bookshop, where she is reunited with her aunt. Said aunt then proceeds to adopt her.
* UnrequitedLove: For Tancred, until they become a couple at the end of the final book.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Tancred Torsson]]
!! Tancred Torsson
A storm-bringer, Tancred is descended from Petrello. His Scandinavian ancestor was named after the thunder god, Thor.
%%* ActionHero
* AffectionateNickname: His close friends call him 'Tanc'.
* AlliterativeName: '''T'''ancred '''T'''orsson. Also doubles as an AwesomeMcCoolName, given that his last name comes from [[MeaningfulName Thor]].
%%* BadassInDistress
* BerserkButton: He's easy to set off in general, but making false assumptions about his endowment seems to be a big one, given how easy it is to blame him for things. It causes him to leave the school in a tantrum in ''The Time Twister'', and Zelda briefly sets it off in ''The Blue Boa'' when she accuses him of what turns out to be Skarpo's doing.
* BigDamnHeroes: Tancred, along with Gabriel and Lysander, often charges in to save the day when all hope seems lost. First in ''Midnight for Charlie Bone'', they rescue Charlie from the ruin with a combination of Lysander's ancestors and Tancred's storms; then in the third book Tancred creates a storm during the 'Night of Winds and Spirits' which terrifies the Bloors and keeps them from interfering in Ollie's rescue. In the sixth book, he rescues Charlie from certain death at the hands of the twins by blowing them out of the alley and to a place near the Heights.
* BlowYouAway: Wind control is part of his endowment and one of his favoured abilities.
* BoisterousBruiser: One of the most physical-oriented of the endowed with a loud, cocky attitude to match.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Starts one with Emma at the end of the series.
%%* {{Determinator}}
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:In ''Shadow of Badlock'', his altercation with Dagbert ends with this.]]
* EccentricArtist: In contrast to the gifted Lysander, Tancred's artistic works are described as interesting to look at, but not always clear as to what they ''are''.
* FaceHeelTurn: Temporarily in the fourth book, due to Joshua Tilpin's gift of magnetism. Luckily he becomes good again when Olivia makes Joshua Tilpin repellent to the endowed by making it seem as if he were covered with spiders.
%%* FireForgedFriends
* GoodIsNotSoft: He's often one of the more pragmatic (if cynical) of the good endowed, and is one of the few children in the group who's tried to outright ''kill'' his enemy at one point (as he set the de Greys' car on fire with the intent to "snuff them out").
* HairTriggerTemper: Before and during the second book, but he gets better later on.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Lysander, his longtime best friend.
* HotBlooded: Tancred has a fiery temper, and is easily angered.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He doesn't have much of a brain-to-mouth filter, leading him to occasionally make insensitive jokes or say things that, while true, are not what anyone wants to hear right now. His debut marks him as staring at Charlie, and though he means nothing by it, it understandably makes the latter uncomfortable.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: He very much takes after his father, whom he also inherited his endowment from.
* MakingASplash: To an extent. He can summon rain, but can't seem to control water in any other form, though he's able to sense it (and thus knows when Dagbert is attempting to drown Charlie and co.).
* PersonalityPowers: In his debut, Billy describes him as "stormy", which tells you a lot about what you need to know about both his personality and his endowment.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: Has one moment of this in ''Red Knight'', when he notices how beautiful Emma looks.
* ShockAndAwe: He can control lightning.
* SmarterThanYouLook: He's not ''stupid'', but given his hot-headed personality, Charlie is at one point caught off-guard by how knowledgeable Tancred can be, and he's described as "surprisingly practical".
* StoryBreakerPower: Downplayed, but Tancred is easily one of the most powerful of the endowed who can eliminate almost any threat by just blowing the offender away. In return, this is likely why he has the most noticeable weakness (spiders) and why he's often written out of books for periods of time (he leaves the school, he undergoes a FaceHeelTurn, he's occupied with his new girlfriend, he's [[spoiler:dead]], etc.).
%%* TookALevelInBadass
* ThoseTwoGuys: Occasionally falls into this with Lysander. Very distinctive personalities, but they're almost always at each other's side and together they fulfill the role of the hard hitters among the good endowed.
* TrueCompanions: With Lysander and Gabriel in the beginning, and later with Emma, Charlie, and Olivia.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Tancred is terrified of spiders. This fear is exploited in the fourth book by Olivia to break Joshua's magnetic hold on Tancred. It is also exploited by Yolanda in the third book, during the Night of Wind and Spirits, when she confronts Gabriel, Billy Raven, Charlie, Lysander, and Tancred in the hall.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Gabriel Silk]]
!! Gabriel Silk
Descended from Guanhamara, Gabriel can feel scenes and emotions through the clothes of others. He comes from a line of psychics.
%%* ActionHero
* BigDamnHeroes: In the first book Gabriel, along with Lysander and Tancred, rescues Charlie from the ruin on the night of the ruin game. Then in the fifth book he arrives at the Vertigos' house when Harken is attacking and with the help of the Red King's cloak manages to ward of the enchanter's attack on Tancred and himself.
* BlessedWithSuck: His endowment is one that falls more on the "hurts him more than it helps him" spectrum. He can't wear secondhand clothes (a notable issue as he's poor), and every time he uses his power in the series, the effect tends to range from uncomfortable at best to near fatal at worst.
* TheEeyore: Mildly. Nice guy, but he's mentioned to have depressive episodes and is initially described as gloomy.
* LetsGetDangerous: Charlie notes the contrast between the mild-mannered, somewhat scatterbrained person Gabriel usually is to the calm, focused, and reliable ally he becomes when the chips are down.
* NervesOfSteel: Whenever Gabriel is in a dangerous situation he never panics and is always calm.
* ThePianoPlayer: Gabriel is a gifted piano player, and finds comfort in music when he is feeling troubled.
* {{Psychometry}}: Gabriel is psychometric, which allows him to experience the thoughts and feelings of people whose clothes he puts on.

[[folder: Lysander Sage]]
!! Lysander Sage
Descended from Guanhamara, Lysander can call up his spirit ancestors.
%%* ActionHero
* TheAce: He has a bit of this. He's one of the oldest and most powerful endowed at the school, is an amazing sculptor and therefore actually deserves to be in the art department, and is respected in general (between him and Tancred, the latter is liked, but Charlie is somewhat wary of his unpredictability and would rather have Lysander's more reliable attitude).
* AffectionateNickname: His friends often call him Sander.
* BetaCouple: He gets a girlfriend (from a "normal" school) around the same time as Tancred, but with less drama and more stability.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Generally one of the most mild-mannered and friendly among the endowed, but no one--not even the evil endowed--is keen to mess with him. After [[spoiler:Tancred's death]], everyone gives him a wide berth, as the constant sound of drums means he's ''pissed''.
* BigDamnHeroes: He and his ancestors save Charlie and the other good endowed plenty of times. Most notably during the ruin game, and the 'Night of Wind and Spirits'.
* ABoyAndHisX: Is sometimes this with his foul-mouthed parrot, Homer.
* GodzillaThreshold: Typically, if he has to use his endowment, it means the situation's gotten dire, as it's not one he uses frivoulously.
* HeterosexualLifePartner: With Tancred, his longtime best friend.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He suspects that Manfred half-brainwashed him into it, as he usually knows better, but he expresses gratitude to Tancred for the warmer weather--mind you, Tancred can't affect the temperature and, in fact, ''hates'' it when people think he can, prompting him to leave the school in an UnstoppableRage.
* NervesOfSteel: Nothing seems to shake him. Because of this he can be counted on in a crisis.
* TheReliableOne: He can always be counted on in a crisis.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Tancred, as they're almost always together and are the ones to be counted on when a fight is expected.
* TrueCompanions: With the good endowed.

!! Olivia Vertigo
A drama student at Bloor's Academy who Charlie befriends. Olivia is very dramatic with an adventurous, fun-loving personality, and is always willing to help out Charlie and their other friends with their plans to foil the Bloors' evil plots. In the fourth book she is revealed to be an illusionist, and a descendant of the Red King's third daughter, Guanhamara.
%%* ActionGirl
%%* ActionHero
* AffectionateNickname: Starts calling Fidelio 'Fido' in ''Time Twister'', something which Fidelio is unsure about at first.
* BigDamnHeroes: Olivia rescues Charlie from Dorcas, Joshua, and the twins in book five by creating an illusion of a swarm of bees to frighten them away. In the eighth book she goes to Darkly Wynd with Benjamin, Fidelio, and Runner Bean to rescue Charlie from his great aunts and creates an illusion of a skeletal monster to stop Venetia and Eric Shellhorn from attacking Runner Bean.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: Try as she might, Olivia is ultimately unable to deny the fact that she is endowed.

* DontYouDarePityMe: Olivia practically says this in the fourth book, when she is upset over losing her audition.
* DramaQueen: So much so that it gets her in trouble in the eighth book, when she creates an illusion of a skeletal monster to scare away Venetia and Eric. She dresses and acts very dramatically, and some people find her very odd because of this.
* FireForgedFriends: With Emma Tolly. After helping rescue Emma from her unhappy life with the Moons, Olivia hopes to have a close friendship with her. However, Emma chooses to spend most of her free time with her aunt, as she's never had a happy home and family before and wants to be in it as much as she can. It's only after Emma (as a tollroc) saves Olivia from Beth and Zelda in the ruin that the two have the friendship Olivia always wanted them to have.
%%* FunPersonified

* HiddenDepths: On the outside, Olivia appears to be carefree, fun-loving, and not a very serious person. In reality, she has keen observational skills, is very adventurous, and is [[spoiler: a gifted illusionist]].
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Olivia goes through this in ''Castle of Mirrors'', when she goes into denial about being an endowed child of the Red King. It takes a lot of convincing from her friends and a talk with Alice Angel for her to accept that she is endowed and needed to keep the balance among the children of the Red King.
* ImNotAfraidOfYou: Olivia says this to Yolanda in the third book during the night of winds and spirits.
* KaleidoscopeHair: In each book Olivia's hair is a different color.

[[folder: Billy Raven]]
!! Billy Raven
An eight-year-old orphan who lives at Bloor's Academy, Billy can talk to animals. He is also an albino and wears glasses. Billy's red eyes make him immune to Manfred Bloor's hypnotic powers.
%%* ActionHero
* AlbinosAreFreaks: Billy is continually passed over for adoption, implied to be because of his albinism, and the villain manipulates him into evil by claiming he'll help him find a family.
* AnimalTalk: Has the ability to understand and speak to animals.
* DisabilityImmunity: Billy's albinism gives him poor eyesight, which makes him immune to HypnoticEyes.
* HappilyAdopted: Is happily adopted by Lyell and Amy at the end of the series. Subverted in the fourth book, however, with his temporary adoption by [[AbusiveParents Florence and Usher de Grey]].
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Switches to the bad side for a book and a half before rejoining the heroes.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: When Charlie (rightfully) accuses him of selling him out to the Bloors, Billy's response is that he just wants to be adopted, and if that's so wrong--and indeed, it's his motivation up until he realizes that the Bloors will never make good on their word.
* ImmuneToMindControl: Manfred's brainwashing doesn't work on him, and neither does Yolanda's.
* InterspeciesFriendship: Is good friends with Ezekiel's dog Blessed, until Billy kicks Blessed in the second book. Later Billy also becomes best friends with Mr Boldova's rat Rembrandt, and ends up looking after it when Mr Boldova leaves Bloor's Academy for good.

* KidsAreCruel: Billy kicks Blessed repeatedly in book two, because he refused to give him the Time Twister. This causes Blessed to stop speaking to him for a while.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: He switches back to the good side when it becomes clear that the Bloors are never actually going to find him foster parents, as they promised.
* TheMole: Ezekiel convinces Billy to spy on Charlie in the first book by telling him he'll be adopted. Billy tells the Bloors of Emma's awakening, which leads to Emma being taken back to the Academy in the middle of the night.
* ThePawn: To the Bloors, Billy is just a tool they use to spy on Charlie and the good endowed. He becomes aware of this soon enough.
* SoleSurvivor: Is implied to have been the sole survivor of the traffic accident that killed his parents.
* TalkingToAnimals: Billy can talk to animals, something seemingly common for a descendant of Amadis.
* TheShortGuyWithGlasses: Billy is short, and wears glasses because of his albinism.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: As he is an orphan in the care of the Bloors, this is kind of a given.

[[folder: Dagbert Endless]]
!! Dagbert Endless
The son of Lord Grimwald and descended from Petrello, Dagbert can manipulate water.
* AccidentalMurder: Dagbert claims that his drowning Tancred was this.
* ArchEnemy: He's described as this to Tancred, both being descended from Petrello. It comes true by the end of the same book, as they have a showdown, if it can be called that--it was more of a CurbStompBattle on Tancred's end, prompting Dagbert to drown him in the next book in revenge.
* ArchnemesisDad: A curse on Dagbert Endless' family ensures that when he turns thirteen, he will have to battle his father, Lord Grimwald, to the death. He wins.
* DeadpanSnarker: Gets shades of this in the series.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Dagbert's alignment changes with the moon. Literally, as according to him, he turns nasty whenever the moon is covered by clouds. At the end, he seems to have finally settled somewhere on the "good" spectrum.
* IDidntMeanToKillHim: Dagbert claims this when he drowns Tancred. He says that he only meant to scare him but lost control.
* IHaveManyNames: Said by Lord Grimwald about Dagbert. During the series Dagbert is called Dagbert Endless, because his name is as endless as the ocean.
* MakingASplash: Subverted with Dagbert, who drowns people by simulating the ocean. Somehow. It's implied he will inherit his father's water powers upon killing him, however.
* OffingTheOffspring: What Lord Grimwald intends to do to Dagbert, due to their family's curse.
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler: Dagbert kills his father]].
