[[spoiler:Later on, he burns down a library full of ancient and culturally significant Chinese books, in order to give himself a vantage point to attack the enemy forces from.]]

* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: [[spoiler:Starts the book a hero defending villages against the forces of the corrupt Ch'ing and Europeans, transitions to a more morally gray AntiHero midway through, and ends it a fanatic willing to kill women and children and even desecrate China's own culture if that's what it takes to liberate China.]]
