Tentacled, cephalopod-like creatures that travel underground. They're usually found near shores and riverbed areas such as the Highlands. They're also native to Elpis, albeit in much smaller sizes.

* AlienKudzu: They’re originally from Elpis, Pandora’s moon, where they’re only large enough to get a few feet on a human, not like the tower-sized beasts seen previously. As for how they got on Pandora and became an invasive species, Sir Hammerlock wanted to acquire samples of the smaller Threshers for research, hiring Jack's Vault Hunter team to put them on a rocket to Pandora, only for the rocket to crash land where Hammerlock cant reach them, and the rest is history. For added insult to injury, one of them was named Terry and the other one was noted to like slapping things a lot, meaning these tiny Threshers became Terramorphous the Invincible and Old Slappy, two of the largest and most dangerous Threshers on Pandora.
* CombatTentacles: Their main method of trying to kill you. They either use their arms to hurl rocks at you from afar or sling them at you like whips.
* ExtraEyes: They have two sets of eyes on the sides of their heads, and some on their tentacles.
* {{Kaiju}}: Threshers can grow to massive sizes, with boss Threshers always being at least being the size of a several story building. Non-boss Threshers can still be utterly massive though, such as Turf Threshers and Badass Pyre Threshers.
* TentacledTerror: Threshers are very aggressive and hungry worms who mostly attack with their tentacles.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: The Wormhole Threshers will emit a powerful gravitational pull to pull their prey in, dealing damage over time when they come close.

* AnimalNemesis: The one for Hammerlock and the reason why he’s got artificial limbs, and probably why he’s got a mechanical eye too. The feeling seems to be mutual on Slappy's part, as Hammerlock uses his scent on his prosthetic arm to remind Slappy about their previous fight to lure it out the earth and 'finish the job'.
* RareRandomDrop: Has a chance to drop the Jakobs Striker, a highly accurate shotgun with strong critical damage.

* BigCreepyCrawlies: Just like Spiderants, Varkids are big gnarly bugs, and Vermivorous takes this trope to {{Kaiju}} levels!
* EvolutionPowerUp: Their main threat comes from the forms they can take when agitated, going through their livespans in a single fight if you give them enough time.
** Larva are 'tiny', about half the size of a human and can be shot away rather quickly. They resemble a strange cross between scorpions with their short stingers and grasshoppers/crickets with their physique and hopping nature.
** Adults are flying enemies who alternate between coughing up a burning spit to biting their prey. They resemble flying beetles with some traits of swarming insects like wasps.
** Badass Varkids lost the ability to fly, but now have such heavy armor that they're now weak to corrosive damage instead of fire, and now prefer to run enemies over at high speeds. They resemble massive and slim stag beetles with the way their mandibles are shaped.
** Super Badass Varkids shed some of their armor to the point they're weak to fire again and can take short flights, but in exchange they sport even higher amounts of HP and can burrow into the ground to attack prey. Their pudgy bodies and single large horn makes them resemble larvae cicadas crossed with rhinoceros beetles.
** Ultimate Badass Varkids grow their wings out to massive sizes and slim their bodies out to enable complete flight, hovering in the air to shoot out caustic globs of spit. Their shape and wingspans bring mosquitos to mind, only gigantic and armored.
** Vermivorous the Invincible is an incredibly rare step in the evolution, capable of running at high speeds to ram enemies and flying in the air to rain down globs of spit and explosive larvae interchangeably.
* MagikarpPower: They're individually weak enough that a melee attack will kill them instantly, and even in groups they're easy to mow down. Given enough time and if they're in a group, they'll borrow into the ground and form a cocoon from which they'll evolve into larger badass Varkids. Give them a truly large amount of time, and they can turn into [[{{Superboss}} Vermivorous the Invincible]].
* MetalSlime: Chubby Varkids are a rare variant that have a great chance of dropping certain Legendary items when killed.
* ZergRush: The rather weak Larva Varkids attack this way.

* MonstrousCannibalism: In the event that one Ratch in a group dies, another will move to their corpse and devour it for extra health.
* TheSwarm: The aptly named Ratch Swarm; a swarm of flying Ratch around the size of insects.
* ZergRush: Much like other pest-type enemies of the series, the common Ratch is weak on it's own and they usually come in numbers.

* SpikesOfDoom: Saurians tend to have a umber of spikes protruding from their heads and limbs. Slingers in particular have them along their spines and tails.
* SpikeShooter: Slinger use their tails to shoot spikes at prey.

* BonusBoss: He spawns rather sparingly in the Eridium Blight, and drops a valuable handful of loot when he’s killed. Such as the legendary rocket launcher Badaboom and rare skins for the Vault Hunters.

* MagikarpPower: They're individually weak enough that a melee attack will kill them instantly, and even in groups they're easy to mow down. Given enough time and if they're in a group, they'll borrow into the ground and form a cocoon from which they'll evolve into larger badass Varkids. An absolutely massive Crab Worm so terrifying and powerful that it becomes a legend in Pandora. Only the toughest Vault Hunters are willing to slay this behemoth for great treasure, such as Pearlescents.

* AIBreaker: Running to the arena's ledge somehow traps both Crawmerax and its mooks in an animation loop, making the fight much easier to handle. However, moving your position can break them out of their animation lock, and since you're next to a cliff, you can easily fall to your death if you're unlucky.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: An InvokedTrope, as attacking the various purple spots covering Crawmerax's body is the only way to damage this boss, including its [[GoForTheEye massive purple eye]].
* BonusBoss: Crawmerax can only be fought after completing the main storyline of ''The Secret Armory of General Knoxx''. Other than that, Crawmerax is a completely OptionalBoss to fight and the reason why players take on this Crab Worm is to farm Pearlescents, or at least a challenging battle.
* FlunkyBoss: Crawmerax spawns a handful of unique and ''very annoying'' Crab Worms: the Craw Maggots, the Green Craw Worms, and the Armored Craw Worms. The former two knock back players off of cliffs with their {{Dash Attack}}s, while the latter two spit globs of acid at said players. To make matters worse, these three EliteMooks are resistant to almost all forms of damage beyond their respective elemental weaknesses: Shock against Craw Maggots, Incendiary against Green Craw Worms, and Corrosive against Armored Craw Worms. It's saying something when these guys are considered to be just as dangerous, if not, even more dangerous than Crawmerax itself.
* {{Kaiju}}: This Crab Worm is ''the largest'' enemy in ''Borderlands 1'' and one of the largest creatures ever lived on Pandora. Crawmerax's size and might can only be challenged by Terramorphous in the sequel.
* KingMook: Crawmerax is essentially a larval Crab Worm that's not just grown up, but also big and strong enough to be a raid boss.
* MarathonBoss: Cramerax is the first raid boss in the series, and while soloing this boss is possible, it's difficult to fight on foot unless you're perpared and know what you're doing, or you're exploiting the ledge.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Crawmerax is clad in purple everywhere, from its shell to its weak spots, inlcuding its large single eye. Crawmerax also happens to be the biggest and strongest boss in the game, and defeating this behemoth rewards you with a generous amount of Legendaries and a better chance to get a Pearlescent, but such a task is easier said than done. It's little wonder why Cramerax is treated as a legendary creature worthy of both fear and respect in-universe.

* CognizantLimbs: Terramorphous can stick its tentacles out of the ground to attack alongside itself, which are treated as separate enemies that can be killed for Second Winds. They come in several different varieties with different attacks, ranging from lasers to giant thrown boulders.
* {{Kaiju}}: Even more so than his peers, as Terramorphous is the largest Thresher on Pandora so far.
* KingMook: Terramorphous is the lord of all Threshers, taking traits from multiple kinds and using them all in battle, such as Badass Fire Threshers, Wormhole Threshers and Feeler Threshers, to name some.
* MarathonBoss: Since Terramorphous is a raid boss, he has tons of health and dangerous attacks. Hope you got some strong weapons and enough ammo to take him down, most preferably with a friend. Or three.
* RareRandomDrop: Terramorphous has not one, but ''four'' rare drops that are exclusive to it:
** Teeth of Terramorphous, an incendiary shotgun that fires rounds in a pattern resembling chomping teeth.
** Breath of Terramorphous, a grenade mod that causes jets of flame to shoot from the ground.
** Hide of Terramorphous, a shield that combines the effects of the Maylay, Fire Spike, and Fire Nova shields.
** Blood of Terramorphous, a relic that gives health regeneration.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: When low on HP, it may opt to harness the power of the Wormhole Thresher and drag the players against its spiky hide to incapacitate them quickly.

* GuideDangIt: There's no ingame indication that Vermivorous even exists, meaning that finding out about her is likely to be done through word-of-mouth between players, or on accident.
* MarathonBoss: Since Vermivorous is a raid boss, she has enough health to make a fight last for around several minutes unless you used the cheese kills above or you're using over-powered builds.

* BonusBoss: Of ''Sir Hammerlocks Big Game Hunt'', only being able to be fought once the main story is dealt with.
* DualBoss: Voracidous and Ngwatu attack interchangeably and support each other.
* GlassCannon: In a sense, as their base HP isn’t all that high, but they can share an absurdly large shield between themselves to soak up damage. And, being raid bosses, they have some intense damage to deal if you can’t avoid their moves.
