* AntiHero: When first introduced he comes off as a heartless, weak-willed sociopath perfectly fine with allowing his adoptive sister, Rukia, to get executed for no reason other than it's the law. He reasons this by saying that feelings and emotions have no value compared to the law and that he never had them to begin with. However, this is revealed to be not quite true when the reason for his actions are revealed; in the past, he was married to Rukia's older sister, Hisana, but she passed away, and asked him to find Rukia, take her in and always protect her. However, this was frowned upon by the Kuchikis, and he made a vow at his parents' graves to never break the rules again. Needless to say, Rukia's execution brought these vows into question and he didn't know which one to keep. Ultimately, he regrets choosing the former. He becomes more lenient towards Rukia after this, but nonetheless remains a ruthless warrior who shows no mercy to anybody, making him arguably even worse than Kenpachi, who violent and fight-loving as he is, at least has the decency to spare the lives of those who can't even defend themselves, even if it is for the wrong reasons.

Removed the Anti Hero entry because most of it is just Pillars Of Moral Character and the result falls foul of Examples Are Not Arguable issues. Crosswicked the Pillars Of Moral Character entry from the trope because this entry is telling people to go elsewhere to figure out how the trope is in use — no entry should do that.
Changed line(s) 595 (click to see context) from:
* PillarsOfMoralCharacter: The reason why he can't show his feelings as openly as he'd like to. It's also the reason why he starts off looking like a villain which develops into looking like a Type III anti-hero but which is eventually revealed to be this type of character instead. See main entry.
to:
* PillarsOfMoralCharacter: The reason why ''Giri'' is a driving force behind Byakuya Kuchiki's character. As a ''very'' high class nobleman, he's required to follow a very strict duty code, which he can't show has broken twice by marrying a commoner woman for love and by adopting his feelings dead wife's little sister, as openly as he promised to his dying wife. So, by breaking the code yet again in the Soul Society arc by stopping Rukia's execution, Byakuya would disgrace himself and the Kuchiki clan horribly... but if he ''didn't'' break the rules, his sister-in-law and pretty much the only living person he truly cares for would be executed...in which case he'd like to. break the promise made to his late wife and be left completely alone. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. There's a theory that he threw his fight against Ichigo [[TakeAThirdOption to resolve the situation]] by allowing someone to rescue Rukia without personally breaking the law, and it gets more credence when the BigBad reveals he set the (unlawful) execution up and orders one of his subordinates to [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness finish off Rukia]], prompting the already-injured Byakuya into TakingTheBullet. It's also the reason why worth remembering that, when he starts off looking like a villain which develops got married and later adopted Rukia into looking like the family, he was ''not'' yet the head of the family, so he wasn't in a Type III anti-hero but which is eventually revealed position to be this type of character instead. See main entry.say ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem.

Examples need to stand alone. They shouldn't depend on readers being forced to locate other tropes just to understand how an example is being used under this one.

Wrapped in the flames of his Bankai, Yamamoto evokes the image of an infernal demon and uses its South ability to summon an armada of charred skeletons to attach his enemy. When Yhwach tries to fight back, Yamamoto attempts to torment him by pointing out that some of the skeletons were his former subordinates. Yamamoto doesn't realize he's fighting a subordinate of Yhwach called Royd who has the ability to mimic Yhwach's appearance. As a result, the tears Yamamoto thinks he's drawing out from Yhwach are instead the compassion of the disguised Royd.
