* PeerAsTeacher: Aang is technically 112 years old at the outset, but spent 100 of those frozen solid so physically and mentally is only 12. Three of his TrueCompanions are young but talented benders who act as his primary teachers in their respective elements: Katara (14) for waterbending, Toph (12) for earthbending, and Zuko (16) for firebending.

* NoClearLeader: Downplayed. The Gaang has no formal leadership, which is acknowledged early on in "Jet" when Sokka [[LeaderWannabe fails to assert himself as the leader]], and later in "The Western Air Temple" when Aang clarifies that he doesn't get to speak for the group. Regardless, the team makes all their decisions through consensus and unanimous vote when necessary, generally serving themselves well without leadership.

** Azula points out that Ukano's infant son, Tom-Tom, wouldn't have gone missing if he hadn't driven the people out of the city.
** While Zhao only said it to be mean, he was quite right that Fire Lord Ozai wouldn't have exiled Zuko and sent him on a SnipeHunt for years if he truly cared about him.

* MidflightWaterTouching: In "[[Recap/AvatarTheLastAirbenderTheWaterbendingScroll The Waterbending Scroll]]", Momo the flying lemur gets chased by a carnivorous reptile-bird owned by the villain of the week. At one point during the chase, they fly low over a river, and each trails the tip of one wing in the water while doing a banked turn.

* InconsistentSpelling: No confusion among fans as to how to spell names, but the official spelling often differs significantly from what you might expect based on the pronunciation. For example, Mai is in fact named for the Chinese word for beauty, which is "mei"; Ty Lee sounds like Tai Li, Joo Dee probably ought to be Zhu Di, and Iroh is pronounced like Airou would be. Also, the Water Tribe uses the character for river (川) rather than the character for water (水).

* NatureVersusTechnology: Downplayed. One of the themes throughout the series is how the Fire Nation managed to take over so much of the world not just because of their bending, but because of their military industrialization. While all of the nations but the Air Nomads had developed complex cities and societies powered by their own forms of bending, it was difficult to stand up to the massive battleships and tanks developed by the Fire Nation on top of their bending. This caused a lot of imbalance and natural destruction, shown by the destroyed forest in "Winter Solstice Part 1: Spirit World", Zhao's hunt for [[spoiler:and later killing of]] the moon spirit in "The Siege of the North", and [[spoiler:Ozai's plan to scorch the entire Earth Kingdom during Sozin's Comet]]. Avatar Aang, as the embodiment of balance in nature, is the only one capable of stopping them for good, and [[spoiler:he and Zuko later discover that the Fire Nation had forgotten the true nature of fire as a source of light and energy rather than mere destruction]]. However, people like Sokka and the mechanist also developed technology to help aid the Avatar and stop the destruction, showing that nature and technology don't have to be at odds.

** During their fight at the North Pole, Zhao exclaims "You should have chosen to accept your failure; you're a disgrace. Then, at least, you could have lived!" to Zuko, but ironically, his comment describes ''himself'': [[spoiler: If Zhao had accepted his failure at destroying the Northern Water Tribe and left the moon spirit unharmed, the ocean spirit would never have merged with Aang and drowned him]].
