* AnAesop: There are several messages that the film wanted to point out to the audience:
** Continuing from ''Anime/YourName'' is that finding a job in a large city like Tokyo is harder than it looks, especially if you have a shady past, lack the necessary identification, or just have an undesirable appearance. No one would accept Hodaka working with them, [[EveryoneHasStandards not even]] the {{Yakuza}}, because he has no credential of any kind as he's a runaway minor, and only Suga and Natsumi would take him in because Suga happened to take a liking to Hodaka earlier. Natsumi herself also struggles to find a job of her own - despite her determination - because she lacked the necessary skills and experience. Suga doesn't fare any better as he was refused work contacts multiple times because of his shady appearance and unhealthy lifestyle (which also prevents him from seeing his sick daughter as well). Lastly, [[spoiler:Hina had to lie about her age just to get accepted for a job at a fast-food restaurant, and they fired her immediately once they discovered her forged info. Also, due to lying about her age, she was preyed on by a couple of thugs who tries to coerce her into prostitution.]]
** Nature is not something to be played with. Even if Hina could change the weather for the better, [[spoiler:she would have to pay for it with her life once she used her power one too many times.]] We have to learn to let nature run its course and avoid trying to alter it to our liking, as it would bring nothing but destruction.
** Don't shoulder responsibility all by yourself. [[spoiler:Hina has come to enjoy using her power to change the weather to make people happy, but this comes at the cost of making her weaker and weaker until it eventually claims her life. In the climax, Hodaka finally manages to convince her to make herself happy for once, and Hina finally wishes for them to be back together.]]
** Every action has consequences. Hodaka runs away from home [[spoiler:and later come into possession of a gun and almost shot someone with it, something that is bound to be noticed by the police, especially since it was caught on CCTV. Suga being a heavy drinker and smoker resulted in him not being able to see his daughter who has asthma. The cost of Hina using her power one too many times resulted in her disappearing, and Hodaka trying to bring her back to life undid the sunny weather that was given by her sacrifice, and Tokyo fell into a never-ending rainfall that eventually floods the city. Also, everyone who assisted Hodaka in escaping the police was arrested in the end.]]

* UnreliableNarrator: Hodaka, in an aspect that often gets missed from discussion but is an important part of the text. Shinkai's driving thesis in the film that to 'really get' something like the sinking of the city of Tokyo, we must give ourselves over to feeling and narrative beyond fact and documentary. Hodaka's unreliability in his recounting of the tale is signaled clearly in a few ways, the most obvious being what his parents are really like and how much of their actions lead him to running away from home, or if he was simply going through a phase. Other than that, most of his narration is definitely true.

* WholeEpisodeFlashback: The light novelization has the FramingDevice of being recounted by the 18 year old Hodaka, although there are a number of scenes in the book that he did not witness and is unlikely to have known the details of.

Merged into a useful note per TRS

* SenpaiKohai: After learning that Nagi is far more capable at interacting with girls than he is, Hodaka refers to him as "senpai" for the rest of the movie.

* TooLongDidntDub: In the English dub, Hodaka still calls Nagi [[SenpaiKohai "senpai."]] The subtitles also leave this untranslated, and neither explains the joke (normally a senpai is someone older and more experienced, but Nagi is several years younger than Hodaka). By contrast, in the Russian dub Hodaka calls Nagi "professor".

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: More amoral than outright evil, but the shady host who attempts to coerce Hina into his business can later be seen [[spoiler:at looking out the window of his relatively normal apartment with his wife and child, admiring the sunshine after Hina's sacrifice.]]
