* BemoaningTheNewBody: After Ash's Turtwig evolves into a Grotle, he loses the SuperSpeed of his previous form and struggles to adjust to his newly gained weight. After being defeated by Paul's Honchkrow, Grotle goes out at night to replicate his old mobility, only to hurt himself constantly and cry. Thankfully, Paul's Torterra shows up to teach Grotle how to fight with a heavier body, which allows Grotle to accept his new form.

Deleted per thread.

* AnAesop: The overarching one of this series seems to be finding that middle ground between ThePowerOfFriendship and MightMakesRight. While friendship is powerful, it [[HardTruthAesop is often no match for real skill]] (Paul is completely dominant in his and Ash's rivalry for much of the arc), but at the same time, focusing solely on strength without taking care of your trainee's mental wellbeing can end up squandering potential and, at worst, end up inflicting serious emotional scars (which Chimchar is dealing with for much of the arc thanks to Paul's ''even more extreme'' methods to unlock his potential). Finding a good balance is needed if you want your trainee to reach their peak (Ash ultimately manages to unlock Infernape's true potential thanks to taking care of his emotional needs in ''addition'' to kicking up his own training when it comes to his Pokémon as a whole).

Talked a lot about the roles of adults in Anipoke and that led me to want to create these examples.

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: This series, while ending some long-standing traditions of the series, also established some new ones that the series has continued to this day, though they were quite different than their iterations:
** This is the first series to feature a recurring adult who sometimes helps Ash and his friends. However, Cynthia does not appear as frequently as the later ones do nor is she in a battle that an episode is focused on.
** More of Ash's Pokemon evolve in this series and this continued to trend upward in later series, but many of the evolutions were deconstructed and often depicted as BlessedWithSuck at first, as opposed to the straight upgrades they were in later series
** This is the first series to completely take place entirely in one region but characters from previous series' still show up more often than in later series that take place in a single region.

That's not a Broken Aesop or Protagonist Centered Morality; the moral is about finding the balance between Ash and Paul's beliefs (i.e. not going to the extremes that they did in the early episodes). It's okay to dislike how Paul was handled, but the show does not depict his treatment of Chimchar as acceptable (esp. when it was noted in-universe he treats it much worse than his other Pokemon). The reason he gets away with it for so long is simply to increase the conflict.

* BrokenAesop: The message of the season is that both Ash's empathetic methods and Paul's ruthless methods have merit, and the key to victory is relying on a balance of ThePowerOfFriendship and being [[CombatPragmatist pragmatic]]. Where the message falls apart is that Paul is downright abusive towards his Pokemon when training, committing deeds that in past seasons were treated as acts of villainy [[note]]a trainer abandoning a Pokemon for not performing to their standards was treated as a MoralEventHorizon [[Recap/PokemonS1E11CharmanderTheStrayPokemon when done in the first season]], and making things worse, the defeats Paul abounded his Chimchar over are his own fault[[/note]], but the series treats them as acceptable.

* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Or [[TheRival Rival Centered Morality]] in this case. Paul abuses his Pokemon and abandons them for not performing to his standards, both of which were treated as acts of villainy in his past seasons, but Paul is, at worst, treated as a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. * FriendshipHatingAntagonist: During the Sinnoh arc, Ash's rival Paul is a trainer whose team is built of the strongest Pokemon he could find. Unlike Ash who believes in the PowerofFriendship, Paul only sees worth in Pokemon that give him results, going as far as to put them through TrainingFromHell in order to bring out their results and [[YouHaveFailedMe releasing any Pokemon]] that doesn't [[SocialDarwinist fit his high standards.]] One particular case has him training a Chimchar in order to make use of it's Blaze ability and then discarding them once he sees no use in Chimchar. Ash later adds this Chimchar to his team and after helping Chimchar through his trauma and getting his Blaze ability under control, [[spoiler: they end up managing to defeat Paul with the very Chimchar he showed disregard towards.]] Despite Paul's demeanour, he does soften up somewhat near the next and during his return in ''Journeys'', he makes it a point to help train Ash by [[FinalExamBoss using a team of Gyarados, Garchomp and Metagross]] in order to help him overcome the signature Pokemon of Lance, Cynthia and Steven respectively, even if Paul doesn't want to admit it.

* {{Deconstruction}}: The series-long rivalry between Ash and Paul is one of ThePowerOfFriendship and the AllLovingHero. Ash's kindness also leads him to befriending weaker specimens that he stubbornly insists are just as strong as any other, only to be [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome proven wrong time and again]].

* {{Irony}}: The Sinnoh League is full of it. Each of Ash's four rivals, as well as Ash himself, is defeated in an ironic way.
** Nando mainly uses Bug-type Pokémon on his team, training a Kricketune, Armaldo and Kricketot. His Kricketune is defeated by another Bug-type, Ash's Heracross.
** Conway's preferred battle tactic is to devise elaborate strategies beforehand. Ash defeats him with a combination of luck (Gible finally perfecting Draco Meteor) and last-minute improvisation (Gible trapping Shuckle in its mouth and biting Dusknoir's hand to nullify Shadow Punch).
** Barry idolizes and admires Paul greatly. Despite [[TheDeterminator trying very hard]] and even making use of clever strategies such as having Skarmory set up Spikes and taking advantage of Empoleon's Torrent, a far cry from [[AttackAttackAttack his usual battle style,]] he suffers a CurbStompBattle at Paul's hands, 3-0.
** Paul only uses the strongest Pokémon and rejects any that don't live up to his high standards. The Infernape that he put through TrainingFromHell as a Chimchar, threw out for supposedly being "weak," and was subsequently adopted and raised by Ash, the Trainer he derided for treating Pokémon as friends rather than tools, ultimately proved victorious over his perfectly-trained Electivire.
** By the end of Sinnoh, Ash had become easily the strongest and most strategic he'd ever been up to that point, and he makes to the top 4 for the first time ever after finally defeating Paul. Despite this, in terms of strict numbers, his [[CurbStompBattle 6-2]] loss to Tobias is by far the worst Pokémon League loss he's ever suffered. It's also tied for his worst loss in general with a rather ironic battle: his battle with Paul at Lake Acuity, the guy he'd just defeated.
