This article is a mess, copy and pasting entries from the character entry that borders on Zero Context Example, describing the character instead of the tropes the film uses.

The movie is the debut of Creator/TadayoshiYamamuro as character designer for the anime of ''Dragon Ball''.

* AxCrazy: Made more frightening by Broly's overwhelming power, and TropeCodifier for AxCrazy BloodKnight characters. His insanity makes Frieza and Cell seem normal and is on par with Kid Buu.

* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: Broly and Paragus are shown having conversations in space without spacesuits.
* BerserkButton: Anything resembling Goku. Or, as Broly likes to put it: "KAKARROTOO~!" Thinking of Goku's crying when they were both 1-day old incensed him out of Paragus' mind control.

* TheBrute: Broly is one of the most badass examples in anime, but he's merely a DragonInChief for his father in the first movie.

* CanonDiscontinuity: Being a NonSerialMovie it was never really considered "canon" to start with, but at least it fit the timeline (there is a small error as Goku and Gohan are in base at the movie's start, but that's hardly the biggest continuity error in ''Dragon Ball''). After ''Dragon Ball Super'' introduced Kale, an adaptation of Broly that took Goku and Vegeta by complete surprise, this movie flat-out doesn't fit in the timeline anymore. Broly would later on be given a ContinuityReboot in the 2018 movie.

* EvilCounterpart:
** Shares many similarities with Goku, such as being born almost simultaneously and sharing character elements from the original Monkey King of ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest''.
** Also being a much more unstable version of Gohan with a less supportive father.
** A number of fans noted he's basically a pure-blooded Saiyan version of Future Trunks: He has a similar relationship with his father, with him being far more powerful than him, and in addition to his normal Super Saiyan form, he has another transformation that significantly bulks him up, gives him ProphetEyes etc.
* EvilIsBigger: Broly in his Legendary Super Saiyan form. Normally he's the same size as Goku, but as the Legendary Super Saiyan he's a giant.

* FreudianExcuse: The movie heavily implies that, besides Kakarot's crying, one of the biggest reasons for the way he is is because of life-threatening events related to Broly's birth. King Vegeta was so ''terrified'' of his messianic power that he ordered his men to murder him by driving a dagger through his heart ''on the day he was born.'' He survived, only to witness Freeza plunging Planet Vegeta around his into apocalyptic hellfire (according to ''[[VideoGame/DragonBallZBudokai Shin Budokai]]'', this is what made him so unhinged in general). Later on in life, his father placed him under the control of a slave crown, initially out of fear of his power, but afterwards, he was used to destroy even more planets than before against his own will, which further distorted what little tenuous sanity he has left into repressed rage and madness, ready to explode with just the ''right'' trigger...

** At the beginning of the film, Paragus had an army of soldiers who were also responsible for slaving the Shamoyians. They dissapear from the movie in the second act. While it is implied Trunks, Gohan and Krillin defeated them off-screen, killing them sound out of character, meaning they possibly died off-screen by either Broly's outbursts or the planet's destruction.
** Goku manages to save a load of Shamoians at the end. They're never mentioned again apart from making a background cameo in the afterlife. So all we know is that they die at some point.

* DubText: When Paragus abandons Broly after losing control of him, the original Japanese Language soliloquy delivered by Iemasa Kayumi was one of reluctant sadness and regret ("Soon the meteor will arrive to destroy New Vegeta; I'm sorry that you have to die like this, my boy; but now that you are out of control, it is the only way the universe won't be destroyed.") The ''English'' language version, however, changes it so that he says something far harsher ("now that I can't control you, you are of no use to me and an obstacle in my path"), changing Paragus into a jerk who never truly loved Broly in the first place and saw him as merely a tool. This change of dialogue runs in direct contradiction to earlier scenes of Paragus being a loving father who risked his life defying King Vegeta to protect his baby boy, and was forced to confine him to a life of constant torture to prevent the universe from being destroyed.

[[MilestoneCelebration 25 years later]], it would be revealed that Creator/AkiraToriyama himself would be overseeing a ContinuityReboot of the character as the main antagonist of [[Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly the first movie based on]] ''Anime/DragonBallSuper''. The movie will presumably ignore the events of this film and its sequels to make Broly a proper CanonImmigrant, but plans indicate that the villain's backstory will be significantly overhauled.

* FreudianExcuse: The movie heavily implies that, besides Kakarot's crying, one of the biggest reasons for the way he is is because of life-threatening events related to Broly's birth. King Vegeta was so scared of his abnormal power that he tried to execute him as a child. He survived, only to watch as Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta (according to ''[[VideoGame/DragonBallZBudokai Shin Budokai]]'', this is what made him so unhinged in general). Later on in life, his father placed him under the control of a slave crown, initially out of fear of his power, but afterwards, he was used to destroy even more planets than before against his own will, which probably factored more hate into his father.

* DubInducedPlotHole: The already tenuous logic of Broly being triggered by Goku's voice is an even harder sell in the dub. In the Japanese version Goku of all ages, including his cries as a baby, is voiced by Masako Nozawa so Broly recognizing his voice at least possible. But in the English version Goku is voiced by several actors, so his cries as a baby sound nothing like his voice as an adult making Broly's grudge even more ridiculous.
