* CanonDiscontinuity: Being a NonSerialMovie it was never really considered "canon" to start with, but at least it fit the timeline (there is a small error as Goku and Gohan are in base at the movie's start, but that's hardly the biggest continuity error in ''Dragon Ball''). After ''Dragon Ball Super'' introduced Kale, an adaptation of Broly that took Goku and Vegeta by complete surprise, this movie flat-out doesn't fit in the timeline anymore. Broly would later on be given a ContinuityReboot in the 2018 movie.

* DarkMessiah: Broly is the Saiyan race's [[MessianicArchetype messiah]]. ''The'' Prophesied Legendary Super Saiyan, a born paragon of everything their race stands for; fighting, killing, and destruction. As if to hammer this one home, Funimation decided to name the sequel ''Second Coming''.

* DisproportionateRetribution: Broly hates Goku with a murderous passion because shortly after they were both born, ''Goku's crying bothered him.''

* TheDreaded: Even ''Vegeta'' was terrified of Broly.

* EvilCounterpart:
** Shares many similarities with Goku, such as being born almost simultaneously and sharing character elements from the original Monkey King of ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest''.
** Also being a much more unstable version of Gohan with a less supportive father.
** A number of fans noted he's basically a pure-blooded Saiyan version of Future Trunks: He has a similar relationship with his father, with him being far more powerful than him, and in addition to his normal Super Saiyan form, he has another transformation that significantly bulks him up, gives him ProphetEyes etc.
* EvilIsBigger: Broly in his Legendary Super Saiyan form. Normally he's the same size as Goku, but as the Legendary Super Saiyan he's a giant.

King Vegeta was so ''terrified'' of his messianic power that he ordered his men to murder him by driving a dagger through his heart ''on the day he was born.'' He survived, only to witness Freeza plunging Planet Vegeta around his into apocalyptic hellfire (according to ''[[VideoGame/DragonBallZBudokai Shin Budokai]]'', this is what made him so unhinged in general). Later on in life, his father placed him under the control of a slave crown, initially out of fear of his power, but afterwards, he was used to destroy even more planets than before against his own will, which further distorted what little tenuous sanity he has left into repressed rage and madness, ready to explode with just the ''right'' trigger...

** Inversion: Broly, in the Japanese version of Movie 8 as well as a few of the games, has him describing himself as the devil in response to Piccolo's statement about him being a monster.

* LaughingMad: Broly is on par with Kid Buu.
* LightIsNotGood: Broly's dressed like some sort of regal/holy being, and is also implied to be the Saiyan equivalent of the Messiah. ''In his purest form, he's a self-described devil''.

* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Half of the movie is basically him beating the snot out of the heroes.

The movie will presumably ignore the events of this film and its sequels to make Broly a proper CanonImmigrant, but plans indicate that the villain's backstory will be significantly overhauled.
