** Ash is almost always depicted as being ObliviousToLove. Is he an ignorant IdiotHero? A somewhat dense 10-year old who simply doesn't get romance yet and isn't interested in it? {{Asexual|ity}}? That's not even discussing the interpretations that he might like one of his companions (typically either Misty or Serena) and either does not realize it or will not admit it. Or perhaps he does know, but [[ObfuscatingStupidity intentionally plays oblivious]] because [[InsecureLoveInterest he doesn't see himself as good boyfriend material]], or doesn't want to hurt their feelings.

* Ritchie as the physical representation of Ash's potential when not weighed down by his negative attributes and the StatusQuoIsGod constraints of a cartoon LongRunner is a popular interpretation of him...usually held by the people who don't [[TheScrappy hate his guts]].

** Whether or not he even ''knows Mewtwo exists'' is another issue. Team Rocket ''was'' involved with Mewtwo in the anime and ''Pokémon Adventures'', which could feed potential Atoner theories... However, it's unclear if this applies to game Giovanni was well.
* Kotone/Lyra (the female protagonist in ''HG/SS''). Both [[http://www.pokesho.com/img_4/4_hgss33.gif Japanese]] and [[http://toonness64.deviantart.com/art/Thats-MIND-BOGGELING-D-167739829 Western]] fandom love depicting her with a few screws loose, partially related to her ReplacementScrappy status. The Japanese version takes it up to eleven by making her NEVER change her expression. However, this is rarely used seriously.

** The internet has minorly gone nuts over an [[Fanfic/PoorRival interpretation]] that Blue's Raticate died and was buried in Pokemon Tower. Most commonly, this was as a result of his battle with Red aboard the S.S. Anne, causing him to blame Red for it and vow to become a Pokemon Master for his dead companion. Interestingly, these interpretations tend not to focus on avenging the Raticate's death by defeating Red, but rather channeling all his sorrow into becoming a better Pokemon trainer, which would make Blue one of the most mature eleven-ish-year-olds ever. It also makes for a [[TragicVillain tragic]]

* Similar to Charizard, Is Iris' Dragonite disobedient because he was abused by humans in the past? Did he once have a trainer who abandoned him for being weak?

** A possible theory is that up until she proved herself to him, Dragonite only listened to Iris when he was sure he'd win under her guidance, but distrusted her when faced with particularly powerful opponents. The fact that he refused to listen to any of Iris' commands (and even the ''one'' time that he did was met with extreme reluctance) during the battles with Beartic and Mamoswine, but obeyed her up until Krokorok's evolution into Krooodile seems to support this.

** It could also be viewed as Charizard acting how he thought he needed to act to either get Ash's attention or play into Ash's expectation of him. Keep in mind that as Charmander he became Ash's default battler next to Pikachu and was rarely let out of his ball except to battle. But even when he was disobeying Ash, he never left Ash even though he was shown to be able to (Damian never released him but he was still able to be caught by Ash) and usually still did what was required of him, even if he acted out before and afterwards. He only started listening to Ash in full after Ash reinforced that he cared about him.
** On a closer look, the point he started disobeying Ash was ''not'' right after he evolved to Charmeleon, but rather the first time he was called to battle after that. [[BloodKnight Given his nature]], he clearly took it as a grave insult that they were calling him out to ''lose''. That might have been the trigger that resulted in his disobedient phase afterwards.
** Adding another layer to this, perhaps Charizard refused to obey Ash as his way to get his trainer to grow some backbone? During the first season, Ash clearly allowed Charizard to intimidate him, and sometimes outright ''begged'' for his help whenever called out, which Charizard might have perceived as a sign of weakness. Considering that Ash took care of him after he got frozen, even after burning his hands badly, maybe Charizard would have respected Ash more had he been more willing to discipline him whenever he misbehaved.

* There's quite a bit of speculation regarding Iris' Dragonite and his disobedient attitude. Was he abused by humans in the past? Did he once have a trainer who abandoned him for being weak like Charmander? When he let Iris capture him, was it out of gratitude for proving his innocence, or because he saw her as someone who could carry him to strong opponents? Also, while battling against Ash's Krokorok, was he finally beginnging to trust Iris, or did he not view the former as a WorthyOpponent unlike Beartic and Mamoswine until his evolution into Krookodile?

* Sometimes, Clemont's eyes get obscured via ScaryShinyGlasses when he tries to reprimand Bonnie on trying to hook him up with a girl, making it look like he's only ''pretending'' to be embarrassed by his sister's antics, and in reality he actually wants to find a girlfriend. And how did he find this logical? He saw [[CluelessChickMagnet Ash]] as an example.

* Does Harley hate May because she called his Cacturne scary, called his cookies not half bad, had some random girl that look just like May steal his favorite snack, narcissistic problems, or all of the above? Quite frankly, ''everything'' about Harley seems to be up to interpretation, and no two people see him the same way.

* Professor Cerise explains in ''[=JN017=]'' that he knew that there was a Gengar haunting the building that would be his laboratory and decided to buy it anyway because [[ItAmusedMe having a poltergeist would be so much fun]]. But 6 episodes prior he acts terrified when it causes a rampage, especially when Chloe's Yamper is the only one who can stop it and only Chloe can command Yamper to attack. [[AdultFear Was he afraid of his daughter's safety?]] Was he acting scared so he can make Chloe gain confidence about liking Pokémon?
* Despite having been seen only a number of times in the season, there’s quite a bit of interpretations regarding Chloe’s character.
** Is Professor Cerise even ''aware'' about his daughter not wanting to follow in his footsteps or does he think she'll eventually come around to liking Pokémon? Does he even know how to communicate with her about her problems? They barely, if ever, seem to interact and Chloe is shown to be quite aloof towards him. ''[=JN031=]'' shows that he knows that his daughter is having problems by telling her that she won't succeed unless she tries opening up to Pokemon so at least he's not oblivious to his daughter's insecurities.

* Delia clearly loves her son but she seems more than happy to have him gone and there's a RunningGag of her ignoring him when they meet. According to ''LightNovel/PocketMonstersTheAnimation'', Delia [[TeenPregnancy married young and got pregnant at 19]]. She loves Ash but misses her youth and is happy to have him gone because now she can be more free. It's easy to also apply this interpretation to the anime.
