Working Title: Only Player Can Defeat Ganon: From YKTTW

Ninjacrat:

  • Sidenote to this, as a nod to the gameplay of one of the other games. Solid Snake's attempt to hide under a cardboard box (a staple in his series), is instantly thwarted by another character. If Lucario wasn't a main character, and if it was a Metal Gear game, the cardboard box would have worked flawlessly.
    • On the other hand, the cutscene was the only one in the game to showcase Lucario's ability to sense aura. Not even The Box (TM) can defend against it! (Also, it is worth it just for Snake's reaction.)
    • However, the box obviously worked against whatever goons passed it while Snake was hiding under it. It would've fooled Meta Knight aswell if Lucario wasn't around.
talking to yourself, Arromdee?

Koweja: I'd have to contest adding Peach to this article. The different spinoffs aren't in the same 'verse, so it's not really an inconsistency as she is one or the other within a series (don't forget that SMB 2 was a dream, so really it was just Mario wishing she was competent Can you blame him?). If she was easily captured in a cutscene of Smash Bros, then it would be valid, but her abilities in Smash aren't related to her abilities (or lack of) in the SMB series.

Antheia: Seconded. Moving the example here, in case somebody wants to discuss it.

  • Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros takes this to extremes, although admittedly she tends to stick with being either powerful or useless within the confines of a single game. As an NPC, she is completely ineffective and possesses an uncanny ability to get kidnapped, but in games where she is a playable character (e.g. Super Mario Bros 2, Super Princess Peach, Super Smash Bros.) she is easily on a par with Mario.

Removed the following example:

  • Mass Effect. Ashley runs from two drones, which can easily be taken in one hit. There are also two geth, but those really aren't much tougher, not in the prologue level anyway.
Ashley had just been in a firefight with the main antagonist, during which the rest of her squad had been wiped out, and she still killed one of her pursuers before the player gets there to help.

Danel: Why is the World Of Warcraft example so horribly coy? We can spoiler-cut things here, after all. As it is, I have absolutely no idea what it's talking about.

Fly: Removed:

**The original Metal Gear had a similar scene, where Snake is captured and disarmed by a single guard.
because that was intentional on Snake's part. The hostage tells Snake to get captured and disarmed so he can get to the prison and find Gray Fox.

Turrican: Removed the lengthy paragraph containing examples of cutscene incompetence in Chrono Trigger, as the cast are neither immune to the Rule of Funny, homocidal maniacs, or expected to be power-levelled in every scene. It's a subversion when New Game Plus effects cutscenes, anyway, and that's why most of the unlikely endings are comic relief ones.

Acacia: Removed the following:

  • In World Of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King one of the quests finds the player faced with the titular villain, in the company of a man who had defeated said villain in the past, surrounded by powerful allies and with The Lich King incapacitated, alone and reduced to 25% health. However The Lich King cannot be attacked by the player, and eventually begins casting a one-hit kill spell, forcing the player to flee or die.

They were not alone but surrounded by Cult of the Damned goons, Tirion was himself incapacitated by the magical backlash of hurting the Lich King like that in the first place, and the Death Knights are only there to extract you all safely. Most importantly, you have complete control of your character the whole time, so it's not even a cutscene; you can always stay and die if you feel like going Off the Rails.

Blitz Blast: Who keeps editing out the justification for Link's actions in the Legend of Zelda article? And why?
