WesternAnimation Didn't Like It, Wish I Could
God this show had such a good premise. I mean an orphanage for imaginary friends which are actually real for people to adopt if they can't be with their creator for whatever reason?
That's pretty cool but here's the thing: Everything that should be good about this show isn't. The dialogue, animation, episode plots, music, characters, etc.. Everything is just WRONG.
I mean for one a lot of the characters are assholes and not just Bloo. Mac has a been a jerk, Mr. Herriman is always a jerk. Madam Foster is a jerk. A bunch of the imaginary friends are jerks. I mean so many people on this show are jerks!
Plus Mac and Bloo fight all the time yet they're "best buds"! I mean if your fighting gets that intense and that frequent you're not best buds period and these guys fight all the time. About the way Bloo acts about the way Mac acts. It's just sad.
There's a lot of violence on the show that isn't pleasant to watch. I mean if the fighting was justified sure but since it's just a bunch of mean spirted hostility then what's the point of watching?
Also Bloo was much nicer in the pilot so why make him a jerk for the rest of the series? I mean in the pilot he was considerate for others, now he's just self entitled and wants to take everything.
Coco is just like a Pokemon, just says her name over and over again it's annoying. Eduardo just does that repetitive that hug cradle someone animation I really don't like. Wilt is a pushover so much that even his creator admitted it when he was an adult. Mac is just supposed to be the average/sane guy/everyman type character but he isn't pleasant with it either.
If you're wondering why I'm being kind of vague it's because I can only write so many characters plus, honestly the show is too painful watch again so I'm mainly going off of memory as well as the show's own wiki.
Look I guess the biggest way the show could've improved was with the social relationships.
Like STOP having Mac and Bloo fight ALL THE TIME and make them get along more. Stop having nearly everyone fight about nearly everything. I mean the mean spirted atmosphere of the show was suffocating. Start having the characters be worth caring about rather than so many of them being jerks that there's no one to really side with.
Look, I'm sorry but based on what the show has I just couldn't like it.
Yeah it's creative, it's original but regardless it isn't good.
I just wish it was better.
One the bright side, Wander Over Yonder is way better and I've seen bits and pieces of the show!
Anyways yeah...
WesternAnimation Honestly doesn't hold up
I remember liking Foster's when it was airing on Cartoon Network. Around 2016, when reruns were airing on Boomerang, I decided to give it a rewatch... and, yeah, it doesn't hold up all that well.
The main problem, as others have pointed out, is that after the first few episodes it became needlessly mean-spirited. All of the characters are unlikeable - they're always whining, bickering, getting angry, insulting each other... even Wilt and Eduardo have their lapses into Jerkass territory. And, really, if Mac and the other characters can't stand Bloo and his selfishness, why doesn't Mac just put him up for adoption? I doubt Bloo would even care, considering he barely seems to stand them either.
The voice acting is honestly mediocre at best. I mean no disrespect towards Tom Kenny, Candi Milo, and Grey Delisle, but I found myself getting really distracted by how many characters had their voice, and Bloo really isn't one of Keith Ferguson's better roles. Some of the jokes ARE genuinely pretty funny (Wilt going insane in "Bus the Two of Us" for example) but all in all I just found the show too unpleasant.
But hey, if you like it that's fine. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
WesternAnimation A mixed bag of funny and frustrating in retrospect.
✨Aye, I remember this show as a kid just like Mac, imaginary friends and all~✨ I always liked how silly, lighthearted and whimsical this little show was....but I didn't like how mean-spirited it can get at times (I'm looking at you, Bendy); the characters, humor and stories go back-and-forth from being cute and funny to Butt Monkeys and jerks treating them terribly...yeah, it's that kind of show.
However, as a plus to this show, I really love the Alice in Wonderland vibes with the stuffy rabbit, the goofy characters, the big fancy house they live in and an imaginative kid falling down a metaphorical rabbit hole of madness; then again, what did you expect from a guy who would go on and create Wander over Yonder almost a decade after creating this one? ✨ In short: what this show is to CN is what CatDog is to Nick.
WesternAnimation A good seed which grew into a bad flower
Fosters showed promise, it really did. It was suppose to be a lighthearted and whimsical show, but when the second season rolled around, every single character (yes, even the goody-goods Mac and Wilt) Took a level in Jerkass. The show got so darn mean spirited at times, it seemed that no one could win. I can't think of more than two or three episodes which ended on a positive note. The main imaginary, Bloo, always had a mentality of superiority, and the guy never shut up about it. In stark contrast to his more humble persona in the pilot. Even his voice seemed to have gain a snarky undertone. And then there's Co Co, my lord Co Co, someone seriously needed to slap this bird thing hard. So there's this one episode where the gang all goes camping, but Bloo eats all the food. So to help them survive the night, Co Co lays a bunch of food... but no can opener, and when asked nicely to lay one, she goes full on Jerkass and denies them one!
But Fosters' sins don't stop at the characters, the episodes also tended to be boring, oh so boring. The jokes, if they should be called that, are few and far between. A lot of the plots are forgettable and cliché. The background characters were more often than not one-notes. The animation is fidgety and flat, typical of Flash. Characters only had a set number of facial movements and expressions that they would cycle through. Overall, I'd say Fosters is one of CN's weaker shows. If you must watch it, just see the pilot and stop after that, you will be doing yourself a big favor.

WesternAnimation I tried to like this show, really
First of all, I love Craig McCracken and the many other cartoons he worked on. He has great ideas that encourage children, adults, and artists alike. However, this is one idea that should have been developed better.
The characters and the world they live in are original and outstanding! Each one has a unique design and you could tell them apart from one episode alone. Their roles in the show are understandable and make sense, however...
the HUGE flaw in this series is the mean-spirited humor. You wouldn't look at this series and expect it to be mean-spirited, but it is. And it's not just one character or a few episodes, it's EVERY character in EVERY episode. Bloo gets a lot of flack for being the Jerkass, sure -especially when you compare him to the first episode, where he was just a lovable trickster who never meant anyone harm. But in the 2nd episode he starts whining, stealing, and kicking people in the shins and calling them "rip-off artist!" (ok, it was funny when it was the salespeople, but why did he do that to Mac?) He gets worse with every episode, and honestly I could put up with him if he had a single. Likeable. Trait. If they made Mac his Morality Pet, then it would alleviate the pain, but he can't even be nice to his creator.
And even if you can ignore Bloo (which is hard, seeing as he's the SECOND MAIN CHARACTER in the show!) you cannot ignore that EVERYONE ELSE in the show is also a Jerk Ass! Frankie, Mr. Herriman, even Mac! And even though Bloo isn't likeable, you can't help but feel bad for him when everyone attacks him and they're Not So Different. I've watched up to the sixth episode (or 5th, if you count the two-parter as one episode) and I'm completely torn. I want to like this series again, I liked it when I was a little kid, but for me, personally -it's harder to watch now.
If you want to see Craig McCracken at his best, look at Powerpuff Girls and Wander over Yonder.
