These examples need to be elaborated upon, as they currently provide no context:

  • A large amount of the cast of Fruits Basket, particularly in the manga.
  • Fushigi Yuugi has a lot of these, to the point that even the jerkiest of the jerks can't get a break. Miaka, Yui, Chiriko, Suboshi for the villain fans... it's hard to know where to start.
  • Enma Ai from Hell Girl.
    • In the second season, Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori, Takuma qualified as well.
    • And Yuzuki in the third, Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae, might fall into this category.Especially on the 25th episode
  • Asagami Fujino. Dear god, Asagami Fujino.
  • Dororo from Keroro Gunsou is very much the Woobie.
    • Ghost-chan arguably qualifies as one as well.
  • Jaehee of Let Dai comes off as this, especially in his Inner Monologue.
  • Browniebit from The Littl Bits, especially in " The Mystical Monument".
  • Ritsuka from Loveless definitely qualifies, as does Soubi, especially when you find out his backstory.
  • Many characters have at least one moment like this in Metal Fight Beyblade. Mainly, Ginga after we find out about his Backstory.
  • Everyone in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Even the penguin and, believe it or not, the last soul-possessing Humongous Mecha.
  • Almost every single character in Now And Then Here And There. Understandable as they're all forcibly-conscripted child soldiers who just want to go home.

Pulled this:

  • Meet Canale from the manga Corsair. He has recessive gene traits so his father thought his mother had cheated on him (because he doesn't look like either one of them). The result: his father Drowning His Sorrows with other women, and his mother going insane, both hating and alienating themselves from him, resulting in him being isolated and alone while trying desperately to win the approval of his parents. But wait, it gets better. Cue his mother committing suicide right in front of him, after which his older brother tries to kill him, blaming him for the state of their family. This only succeeds in turning him blind. Did I mention Canale is seven years old at this point? Next, his brother tries to kill him again, through a third party of hired killers. The hired killers like the look of Canale and so they take him back to their village which is in fact home for a group of deadly assassins who train him into a killer and repeatedly rape him (frequently) until he turns 16. At this point he is sent on assignment to kill the leader of an opposing religious sect. The religious leader is kind enough to take him in under his wing, and Canale responds to his kindness, becoming severely conflicted about killing him. When some jealous acolytes try to poison him, he allows them to, seeing it as the only way out of an impossible situation. After stopping him from dying, aforementioned religious leader makes him promise he won't kill himself... Cue the assassins showing up about twenty minutes later and telling him he's got one night to complete his assignment before they take him back into abject slavery. Now further conflicted because a) he promised he wouldn't kill himself (which he sees as the only way out), and b) if he goes another assassin will take his place, he goes through with the assassination attempt. Deeply traumatized and horrified at what he has done, he escapes to join a group of pirates, believing his mentor is dead, and suffers horribly for the next eight years from the guilt and trauma with which he is burdened. Furthermore, he's trapped because all he wants to do is kill himself but he promised he wouldn't, and that the only way around that promise is to find someone who is strong enough to kill him, which in itself is a problem because the sect of assassins trained him far too well and... And the real kicker? This all happens BEFORE THE FIRST CHAPTER. It. Gets. Worse. No kidding.

This example is very long and full of Word Cruft. I tried to rewrite it, but I'm not familiar with this work so it's too difficult. Leaving it here for whoever can make it more concise and readable.

Shouldn't Gohan and possibly Goten from DBZ be here?

Since “woobie” comes down to one’s personal opinion they might, wanting to help or comfort them has to be due from outside circumstances not from the characters own choices causing the pain to themselves.
